Inside and Outside: What I’ve Been Up To

May 2, 2014 at 8:33 am by Claudia

fridayjackinthepulpit

Found on a path in our woods: a Jack in the Pulpit. What a delightful surprise! As soon as Don came home yesterday, I dragged him up there to see it.

fridayhickorybud

A bud on our Shag Hickory.

fridayspotthebunny

Can you spot the bunny? In fact, there were two of them, but the other one scampered out of the shot. I love our bunnies and though they do a wee bit of chomping in the garden, there is more than enough vegetation around the edges of this property to keep them satisfied, so it hasn’t really been a problem.

fridaypottingshed

A stool has been added to the potting shed. I had fun painting and shabbifying this piece.

fridaydhstudio

And another stool has been added to the studio/office.

fridaydeskinstudio

Should I paint this chair? I’m leaning toward leaving it as is. There are a lot of painted surfaces in the dollhouse and, just as in my life-sized house, I like to have mix of natural wood and painted pieces.

fridaydhtoilet3

Drum roll. The owner of the dollhouse finally has a toilet. Actually, I had this toilet in my stash but it, like so many dollhouse toilets, had flowers on it. Really? When was the last time you saw a toilet or a bathtub (because the bathtub had them, too) with a flowery design on the porcelain? Was this done because little girls needed dollhouse furniture that was pretty and anything reminding them of bodily functions was a no-no? I suspect that was the reason. But it’s still the norm. I see a lot of them on dollhouse websites. I finally slapped some ceramic paint on the toilet, just as I did with the bathtub, and put it in the bathroom. Since the tank is hidden, I think I can get away with it until I find something better.

The owner is grateful. Using her neighbor’s bathroom was wearing thin.

Happy Friday.

So nice to see things coming alive in your neck of the woods. I will need to mow soon, if it ever stops raining long enough. I noticed yesterday my flowering pear trees are trying to open their leaves. We need some warmer temps here for things to bloom.

Completely enjoying the progress of your house. How about a pillow on the chair? And I like what you did with the dress form.

Actually, I meant if you don’t paint the chair, maybe you would like a chair cushion on it. But the stool is a good idea, too.

Also, I’d love your opinion on my kitchen chairs in my small house. They were white and I painted them teal and watermelon slice. I’m not sure that I didn’t prefer the white. Let me know if you’d take a look and I’ll send a link.

Oh my goodness….duh! I forgot that I asked that question about the chair! A cushion is a great idea, Peggy! I think I’m going to try that – something cheery and bright.

Oh I love Jack-in-the-Pulpits (and Dutchman’s Britches too — the early things that give one hope of warmer weather). Love how the dress form fits in so well by the cutting table. Yay for the toilet!!!

I would leave that lovely chair as well. The 2 stools look precious! Is that a bottle of shells in the bathroom? Wouldn’t you just LOVE to pot all of your plants this spring in that little potting spot? I know I would! A respite from the sun and wind as you are working, along with a nice glass of ice water close by… Perfect! If we could only get some temperatures even near 60* here, it would surely help with the budding out process which is painfully slow this year. We have been about 15* or more below our average temps for weeks now. We haven’t seen the sun since last Saturday… BUT, it isn’t snowing, and since that horrible thought is still pretty fresh in our minds, I won’t complain (too much). Green has taken over what was pure white not too long ago, and for that I will be thankful!!

Yes – another blogger sent me some wonderful things early on in my dollhouse work and that was one of them.
Oh goodness, I would kill for this potting shed in real life! My potting shed at MHC is the table on the front porch!

Yes, it’s nippy here but it’s green. And I don’t see any snow. Yay!

I think leaving the chair “as is” is perfect – most wood is prettiest when left on its own. Love the teeny laptop too. What a modern lady this vintage homeowner is! PS – meant to ask this before Claudia – but did Don ever do an episode of “Frasier?” Saw one the other day and I could have sworn the actor [it was a scene in Niles’ office] was Don. If not, he has a twin! But I missed getting to the credits in time to check. Please tell me I’m not seeing things… and have a great weekend.

Yes, he did and that was the episode. He plays one of Niles’ patients. I think it’s the episode where Diane comes back.

Hey, girl, I have a decal on the front of my tub—a rose—and on the toilet tank, another rose bouquet! ;-) And they are kept clean also with just a soft swipe of a damp cloth. Love them on my bathtub!

I love how everything you put in your doll house is a reflection on you and your home. The way you shabby up everything is unreal. I am so excited about the swap Remember I said that I wasn’t going to get into a doll house because I already had too many collections…..well…..what am I doing in this swap. I bought a shelf last year that reminded me of an open doll house. That’s where I will put my little swappies.
Everything here is green. The weeds are growing like crazy.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
