I love those rare mornings when you can still see the moon in the sky at 10 am. That’s what we saw this morning. It may not be fall officially, but it sure is around here. The mornings are cool and crisp, leaves are constantly floating to the ground, trees are turning color, and the garden beds are full of leaves and cobwebs.
On this sunny day, it made for a lovely morning walk. It’s going to get warmer this weekend, with temperatures in the mid-eighties. The last hurrah?
I read a lot yesterday and I’m just about to finish The Woman in the Window. I must say, it’s well done, with lots of twists and turns in the plot. It has a Rear Window – type premise, which allows for all sorts of thrills.
Monarchs have started migrating south, but this guy won’t be migrating for a while. We saw him on one of the milkweed plants this morning, chomping away on a leaf. I’ve seen more monarch caterpillars this year than ever before.
I’m missing some of the birds that were here all summer long – I think robins have already headed south – but I saw a goldfinch drinking from the birdbath yesterday, and a catbird calling from the porch railing. We also saw (and heard) Canada Geese this morning, flying in beautiful formation.

It has been pretty warm here ~ in the 80’s the past few days ~ and kind of humid. I think this weekend it is to go down into the 70’s. Everything is blooming a bit after a couple of inches of rain last weekend, esp the zinnias. Indeed, a last hurrah. We still have a few Hummers at the feeders. The males left about 2 wks ago, and all that remain are the females and the babies. They leave a few weeks later on their journey. I haven’t seen a Robin in a while, but they always seem to come back for a week or so in October before they leave until next spring. I think they take a late summer vaca down by the river.
Glad you are enjoying the book. I thought the same thing about it having a nod to Rear Window. Hope you are having a great Wed!!
You’re right – I forgot. I often see robins gathering in October. So where are they now, I wonder?

Claudia you are right about Autumn. The leaves are falling fast and furious here. The squirrels are taking the hard walnuts off the nut tree. Went to the store today and the air was nice and crisp with a beautiful blue sky.

After a deluge of rain (we have local flooding again), it has been warm and sunny the past couple of days. Right now it is gloriously sunny and 81 degrees. I absolutely love it. But even with this warm weather, you can tell fall is right around the corner. There’s hints of color change and the leaves are falling off the trees like crazy already. My front porch is covered. And same here, the robins are already gone. I still see butterflies and bees, so that’s a good thing. I sure miss all the birdsong though. More rain coming this weekend for us which is a bummer. We’ve just had way too much rain here this year. Even walking down the street to where the area is lower, people’s lawns have standing water. I am so glad we live at the top of the street, up a little hill.
I’m sorry you’ve had so much rain. We have a dry week with rain next Monday and Tuesday.

I love seeing people’s bookshelves and I always smile extra big when I spot titles that are either on mine or that I have read (and there were more than a few). But the one I haven’t read or seen and I have a feeling would fascinate me is the bio of Wallace Nutting. His photographs really speak to me. I’d love to find one — well, I have, but out of my price range!

That biography of Nutting was a Christmas gift from Don a few years ago. One of our favorite antique shops has a booth run by a guy who specializes in Nuttings – I’ve purchased a few from him – and he had this book on display. It’s autographed by Wallace Nutting himself, so it’s a real treasure.

I am interested to know when Fall officially starts for you. In Australia, Spring started at the change from August to September though we had been having much warmer weather through the last weeks of August. We are suffering from a lack of rain, we would happily have the rain Melanie is experiencing. Much of Australia in in drought or heading into drought if rain does not fall this Summer. With the drought have come terrible bushfires (forest fires). You may have seen homes on our Sunshine Coast being threatened and engulfed by them.
Autumn starts on September 23rd, next Monday.
I pray that you receive some rain, Michelle. Portions of our country suffer from drought every year and we see a big increase in forest fires.
That’s interesting about American robins being around in Springtime. In Britain they’re very much a Winter bird, in fact they’re a staple illustration of Christmas cards!
I couldn’t help noticing My Brilliant Friend by Elena Ferrante on your bookshelf. I might have mentioned I watched the Italian TV series recently. If you’re able to see it, I would highly recommend it.
Thank you, Dee Dee. I have yet read it or any of the the other books in the series, so I’ll hold off on any television adaptations. Always like to read the book first!
