Labor Day

September 7, 2015 at 8:51 am by Claudia

9-7 scoutie

Scoutie doing everything she could to avoid looking at the camera. This is the best of the bunch.

9-7 limelighthydrangea

Limelight hydrangea – just starting to turn pink.

9-7 autumn joy

Autumn Joy sedum.

I hope you’re having a peaceful and happy Labor Day.

From the wife of a proud labor union member (3 unions, in fact) who wishes she also had the protection of a union in her line of work.

Happy Labor Day.

Happy Labor Day! You would think our animals/kids/etc would get use to a camera in their faces since they live with us! I am always snapping pics! Enjoy your day of rest. My poor Mom got a 24 hours stomach flu and I’m heading there with some Pepto per her request! Just hope I don’t get it!

    hugs,
    Linda

I like your photo of Scout – she looks positively playful.
I work long hours at a stressful job, but I consider myself fortunate to have a degree of job security in these uncertain times. I give thanks this Labour Day for my employer and long time co-workers, all of whom are extraordinarily kind.

I know your job is a stressful one, and surely a reliable employer and wonderful co-workers help make it more bearable. Have a wonderful day, Barbara. I hope you’re feeling a bit better.

I’ve been basking in 60 degrees (F) since 7am, although the sun is already long out. We’ll rise over 30 degrees in no time, so I’m grabbing the cool while I can get it.

Your flowers are so lovely, as is dear Scout. I hope you and Don have a nice day, especially since you recently revealed how it works with the theater to where (as a Monday off) it never really seemed like an actual holiday because that was your day off anyway, from the whole week’s labor. Today can be different!

I always remember from the movie, PICNIC, which is an all-time fave of mine with actor William Holden (although I feel he was too ‘old’ for the part) and a host of other film and theater greats, how the main male character in the ensemble cast arrives via freight train somewhere in Kansas, he needs a bath and is looking for work, and a kindly elderly woman says something to the effect of, “Nobody works today! It’s Labor Day!” and gives him a meal. I had loved how the director (Josh Logan?) incorporated real-life, community picnic scenes for the film; you could just feel the hot end of summer. But I later read that, no, those were actually all scenes (with a ton of extras, I assume ‘locals’) shot specifically for the movie; incredibly realistic, like a news reel (documentary effect). It really somehow gave the authenticity needed for a small-town, mid-century, community gathering. The film was beautifully shot overall and I love its theme song. There was another William Inge play that translated well to film (my opinion!), which was Bus Stop and of course Splendor In The Grass, but I think he wrote that as a screenplay. He was such a tortured soul; I studied him in high school when practically my whole senior year was devoted to classes related to English.

Anyway, PICNIC makes me want to attend a big one in my own life on Labor Day, just not in this heat! Unlike the film, no lake in my little town, but we do have a parade later this morning. I might just go watch…if I can find a wide-brimmed hat and the sunscreen!

Picnic is a wonderful movie. Side note: Don worked with Josh Logan a few times towards the latter part of Logan’s life. They became fast friends and Don treasures the time he spent with him. Don has an autographed copy of Logan’s autobiography. I’ve always been in awe of Don’s relationship with Logan – he directed South Pacific, for goodness sakes, and a host of other Broadway classics. I would have loved to have known him.

The more you help us ‘know’ Don, the more I’m fascinated! Don should write a book about his life while you’re writing your novel, Claudia!

Yes, I guess we both have. Don’s worked with so many well-known directors and actors. And I have, too. We’re very fortunate to have worked with so many interesting and talented people.

Hope your day is lovely. Sweet Scout!!!
My husband was a very proud Union member throughout his 30+ years of teaching until the most awful uneducated governor of all times arrived in Wisconsin. But he DID remain a Union member with little benefit (as the rights were stripped away) until he retired. People need to remember that without Unions who fought for better working conditions, there wouldn’t be a 40 hour work week with days off guaranteed for almost all who labor, and even do NOT belong to a Union. With the death of labor unions, the “American dream” becomes less and less attainable while the rich get extremely wealthier, and the middle class dies.
Sorry, Claudia. You know my passion for this subject…………. I DO hope everyone has a great day.

Nothing to apologize for, Chris. I feel the same way. I don’t understand why those who vote for someone like Scott Walker do not seem to realize that they are only hurting themselves. Would they like to go back to working endless hours without overtime? Or a guarantee of a 40 hour work week?

The American Dream is fast becoming a thing of the past. If we eliminate unions, we can say goodbye to it forever.

We sometimes do forget what this day is all about. I was a Teamster…so was my hubby. And we enjoyed the many protections that only a union can provide. Enjoy your day! ;)

Amen to unions! Without them, the middle class will disappear and workers will suffer.

Echoing Vicki’s comment above regarding the great movie “Picnic” [which I’m sorry to say, TCM is NOT showing today – boo]. I was born a year after it was released and so much of it reminds me of my childhood. The ladies look the same with their short, chic hairstyles, wearing dresses and pearls – sometimes even gloves – to a picnic. !!! And my parents had a basket with the very same dark blue plaid blanket as is shown in the movie. Our family picnicked on it 100s of times [it was our car blanket too]. Anyway “Picnic” is like a time capsule for me, and I’m going to have to order it on DVD because if I can’t rely on TCM to show it on Labor Day, I’ll need one of my own. Have a lovely, quiet, relaxing day. :>)

Great post as always. I sometimes have trouble getting here. I had to refresh twice today. I always love the pictures of Scout. Your flowers are still so pretty. We can tell that fall is on it’s way here. (Wisconsin) So much is going to seed now, but the birds sure do love it.

When that happens, it’s usually because of your browser, connection and/or your server. If you have a slow connection, it will take longer to load. It’s fine on my end.

Here, in mid to late August, the birds stop coming to the birdbath. I really miss them! But it’s a sure sign of fall.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
