Il est mon anniversaire aujourd’hui.

I’ve retained a little of my high school French – un peu.

I remember being a child and thinking that my birthday, November 21st, must be the most magical, wondrous day ever. That November 21st was simply more special than any other day in the history of the world.

Do you remember that feeling?

It changes as we get older, of course. But I still get a little hint of that feeling every year on this day. It’s fleeting, but still wondrous. Thank goodness.

This is the first birthday of mine on this earth without my mother.

As I said in another post – a year of firsts.

So…bittersweet, wondrous, sad, happy, celebratory, fun. That’s the order for the day.

And Happy Birthday to Patricia, a reader of this blog who shares this birthday with me, along with the number of candles on the cake. (And let me add the name of faithful reader Mary D. – she is celebrating her birthday today, as well!)

At first I thought I had hit google translation for French when I came to your blog. :) My 11th grader is taking French — he took it in Middle School but says he doesn’t remember a thing, so he says, be he picks up languages pretty easily.   20. Happy birthday from one birthday girl to another. You’ve described just how I used to feel on this day. It was so exciting and special, and a forerunner to Thanksgiving and Christmas. It was the best time of the year for me.

Though youth is just a memory, and when our dear mothers who made our ‘birth day’ so special, both for us and our families, may be gone, we soldier on and this day is ours to celebrate however we wish.

  44. Happy Birthday, dear Claudia, and with my own mother having turned 90 recently, my sisters and I always have in the back of our mind the thought of wondering–when? How many more years will we still have her? Even with her failing memory she is still our precious mother and we treasure her, so I understand that this birthday can be a bittersweet one for you.

  54. Happy Birthday Claudia. Hope many great memories of your Mom pop into your memory today. My Mom’s been gone a year and a bit and when I start to feel sad (for me) I bring in a good memory to balance things out. Bit of blurry tears happen anyway. Every birthday is special and a day to do something nice for you. I read all your posts, and appreciate your writing style (clearn, honest, being yourself), your photos (and yes your Doll House series was delicious).

  58. Oh, Claudia, I hope you have a great birthday! Use your birthday as an excuse to just go and do whatever you want without any hesitation or explanation! I know what it feels like in the “year of firsts” without your Mom, and nothing takes her place, but I’m so glad you have Don and Scout with you to help celebrate.
