The lobelia that I’ve planted in several porch pots is taking off rather nicely. This is a quick pic that I took when I ventured out to the porch, walking slowly and carefully, favoring my back. My back, which I’m happy to report, is much better today! Glory be!
Though it will probably be a mixture of sun and clouds today, it’s sunny right now and I’ll take it. I never made it out to the porch yesterday, other than to water plants. No sitting on the glider. But I will remedy that today.
The grass is way too long due to all the rain. Don will have to mow this week. I think I should wait a week to tackle the lawn and so does Don. So, I’ve given him his instructions: the front lawn has to be mowed today because it’s going to rain tomorrow. And if we wait until after tomorrow, it will be impossible to mow.
Carol, a reader of this blog, sent me something in the mail, all the way from Alberta, Canada.
Another copy of Mockin’ Bird Hill, this time with Patti Page on the cover. Isn’t it lovely? We have two now – the other one has Les Paul and Mary Ford on the cover. We’re going to frame them.
Thank you so much, Carol! We love it and very much appreciate your generous gift.
I’m having the best time reading Beverley Nichols’ A Thatched Roof. It’s absolutely charming and I’ve lost track of the times I’ve chuckled out loud. Lucky for me, I have another one in this particular series waiting on the shelf, and there are four more ‘house in the country’ books that he wrote, as well. They hearken back to a seemingly simpler time, though we know that nothing is ever as simple as it appears, and the combination of an eccentric mix of characters and life in the countryside is right up my alley.
Happy Thursday.

Enjoy the porch time in the glider, Claudia. Where will you hang the sheet music? On and off rain so I’ll be staying in until this afternoon. Have to take one of my cats to the cardiac specialist to check out her heart murmur. Trying to stay positive and not worry too much…
Claudia says
Not sure where we’ll hang it. We don’t have very much wall space!
Sending healing thoughts to your kitty, Wendy. xo

What a wonderful gift from Carol!
Your glider has reminded me that it’s about time to put out our glider. While not as vintage as yours…it does “glide”, and it provides comfort. Guess that’s all I need. But…that’ll have to wait until after this rainy stint we are now in.
Glad to hear your back is getting better. I’ve been bending a lot picking up the little maple seedlings that pop up all over the place. We could have a forest of maples here if we neglected that task. So…I’m careful not to bend and twist. I have too much work to catch up on over here.
Enjoy your glider and your nice day…I’m envious! ;)
Claudia says
We get a lot of those maple seedlings here, as well. Plus, every other kind of weed! Time for your glider to come out so you can enjoy it, Donnamae!

I hope you have a lovely glider day. And so smart to rest a week before tackling mowing. There are so many weeks ahead of that chore. We had much thunder and some lightening this morning and a quite heavy downpour. More to come this aft and through next Tuesday. I hope people are anticipating some shortages in field crops this year as the farmers can’t get into the fields. Most midwest states are about 70-88% behind in planting. I think everyone will be impacted in some ways.
I hope you enjoy the porch and the glider and your book and also supervising Don in the mowing today. Rest is always the best!!
Claudia says
I think we’re getting that thunder tomorrow, Chris. I did sit outside, but I realized I’m still very tired from lack of sleep/back pain.

Such a cool gift from Carol! My little hamlet is just a few minutes outside the City of Edmonton, which is the address stamped on the front of the music. Love this!
Glad you’re feeling a bit better. And your flowers are looking amazing already. We’re hoping to plant this long weekend but have found some perennials have sprouted and some of the bulbs we planted for the first time ever as well. So glad Spring is finally here!

So glad! Especially for you guys way up north!

Glad your back is better. It’s a beautiful day here in Atlanta. I’ve been in most of the day, but I’m getting ready to venture out to see how my little veggie garden is doing. xo Laura

Enjoy, Laura!

I’m adding Nichols to my book list–I know I’ll love them! Enjoy your sunshine. We traded our sunshine for two springtime Sierra storms, complete with snow. No worries, I love our changeable weather!
Claudia says
Oh good! At this point in the year, snow would not go over well for me. But you have a better attitude, Roxie!

The sheet music is wonderful — such a gift!
Your lobelia looks great. I think I’m having your garden back today — and more to come, for we’ve only just started! But the weather is holding. I did a wonderful workshop last night with the nicest herb hanging basket and can’t wait to post photos of their glorious gardens to the blog. Life is good.
Claudia says
Sounds lovely, Jeanie!

Glad to hear your back is getting better! Hope you enjoy some porch time today. The spring weather continues to veer between sunshine and sudden down pours here so you really have to be strategic about outdoor work.
We got up to 76 this afternoon and it was even a teeny bit humid so, needless to say, I headed for the front porch to sit and knit a few rows. With the warmer weather, am able to have the patio door open too and enjoyed hearing the house wren in our backyard singing away all day. The past two years she set up housekeeping in a bird house hanging from our pergola. Last fall I had to take it down because it was rotting. In March I hung up a new one and crossed my fingers it would pass muster with her. Apparently it did because I saw her peeking out of it for the first time this morning. The thought of hearing that burbling song again all summer kept me going all the past miserable winter.
Claudia says
Isn’t that wonderful? So glad she came back!
Marilyn says
Glad your back is feeling better. How nice of Carol to send you that gift. Our front lawn needs a mowing sooner rather than later.

So much rain has made for very long grass, Marilyn!

Much better is a great title to read Claudia!
Be gentle with your dear body and hopefully all better is just around the corner!
Claudia says
I’m being very careful, Grace! Thank you!

Well, you sold me on Beverley Nichols, so I looked him up, found out about him, became intrigued myself; so, a couple of his books are on the way. Thanx for the great tip.
SO glad you’re back is better! And I went to the dermatologist today for the annual all-over skin check and (for once in my overall medical profile) came out smelling like a rose (which is a miracle considering I was a sun-on-the beach girl*** til I was age 35 and courting a SoCalifornia tan, even stupidly in my 30s trying to also enhance it with a tanning bed [supreme idiocy]). Ah, the smell of Coppertone and Sea & Ski in the 60s; vacay memories. But, bad idea; a lot of us (most of us?) just didn’t know, of course; thankfully today, girls are being more sensible about protecting their skin from damaging sun rays. (Is this TMI/personal? I was just so happy to have a good report! ***Had to laugh to myself. A fave old movie with Maureen O’Hara and Jimmy Stewart called “Mr. Hobbs Takes A Vacation” has a scene where he says he’s gonna go take some sun on the beach and the foreign-born housekeeper mistakes what’s he’s saying for the slang/’blue’ word, SOB!)
Vicki says
MAN am I getting sick of this auto-correct thing on my computer; I have to look more into getting rid of it. THAT, and auto-save. Grrrr. “SO glad you’re back is better” is not improved by the punctuation correction on the ‘your’ (SO glad your back is better). Unless it was me and not the machine! Yeah, simpler day; simpler time; Beverley Nichols, bring it on! He probably only had a radio and a phone … and maybe a manual typewriter!!!
Claudia says
Sometimes I long for ‘simple’ Vicki!xo
Claudia says
You’ll so enjoy his writing, Vicki!
I still love the scent of Coppertone, Vicki. It evokes strong memories!

I’m glad you liked the sheet music, Claudia! I know it will fit in beautifully with your “cottage”. Enjoy!

Thanks again, Carol!
