Muggy and a Monarch

July 15, 2024 at 8:41 am by Claudia

Wouldn’t banning assault weapons be a good thing to do?

Just thinking.

Heavens! I’m either completely lethargic, like I was Saturday, or I’m on overdrive, as I was yesterday. Maybe yesterday’s energy was due to my not venturing outside until later in the day. The a/c was on and I dusted, vacuumed, did a load of wash, straightened the slip cover on the sofa in the den (always a pain,) took many photos of the things I wanted to add to my Etsy shop, listed all the items (which means measuring, weighing, etc.) and then watered everything outside.

I wish I had that kind of energy on a daily basis.

It’s completely crappy out there; hazy, hot, and humid. I am doing my best to stay positive. Gratitude: working a/c units, my husband, who keeps me laughing, and the knowledge that this will break on Wednesday. Hopefully.

The day lilies on the far side of the house are blooming. As we sat down for the evening last night, Don said “Oh look! There’s a deer right outside the window!” I knew that meant trouble, and sure enough, he was ready to chomp on the day lilies.  I knocked on the window and he took off. Sweetheart, you’re beautiful, but stay away from my day lilies! This property is full of green things you can eat. Head on up to the woods.

My first Monarch sighting was yesterday.

I followed him around as he dined on every one of the coneflowers. But he was skittish and it was hard to get a clear photo.

At this point, I was on the porch leaning over the railing trying to catch that second when he would open his wings. A bit blurry, but I got it. I take that back – ‘she.’ She doesn’t have the black dots that the male has.

Don’s gig on Saturday was cancelled at the last minute. The owner of the bar (which apparently has a terrific menu) called Don because she hadn’t had any customers the night before and she was panicked about money. (She pays the performers, unlike a lot of other venues where the only money comes from tips.) She was very apologetic. Bless her heart, she’s trying to make a go of it and that’s very hard these days. I hope things pick up for her.

And, yesterday, I reached the point where I could I could not stand my hair any longer, so the team of Don and Claudia whacked 3 inches off. So much better!

There are a few new items in the Etsy shop.

Stay safe.

Happy Monday.

Monarchs are so beautiful…just an amazing pattern.

Total agreement about banning assault style rifles …they absolutely are not necessary.

Hope Don gets another gig soon.

I’m sure your hair stylist team did a great job…it always feels so good to get a trim.

Well, if it’s any consolation, you are more productive than I. So pat yourself on the back, declare victory and move on! And it sounds like you are.

New hair, a monarch, a husband who makes you laugh. All to the good, I’d say!

Lucky you not only seeing but photographing your Monarch. The milkweeds are blooming along with a million cone flowers and yet I haven’t seen one Monarch here yet. But I’ll keep looking.

Our upstairs renovation is done! Waiting today for the village inspector to give the all OK and project manager Austin to pay one last visit. After 3 1/2 months of angst and feeling like a prisoner in my own home, the bathroom is gorgeous, the new floors throughout great, and it’s absolutely the last reno I’ll ever be a part of.

I haven’t left the house, except for one brief grocery store run, since last Thursday. Friday was last minute workmen stopping by and since retirement I try not to run errands on weekends. So I’ve been kind of sheltered from the heat except for brief weeding forays out back.

With the Republican coronation in town, Dean is working from home all week. We got periodic updates all weekend from our downtown sons who walked around treating the whole thing like a circus side show, which indeed it is. Now that it is all too real today (and Nick can see Pere Marquette Park from his loft’s windows), they’re dreading what sorts of street shenanigans might happen in the days to come. Nick’s job is totally remote and Chris, who lives a bit south of his brother, only goes in to his suburban office two days a week anyway will work at home too. So the whole family will be home all week. Sure is a different office world than the one I retired from.

    Take care,
    Kay

Our milkweed bloomed several weeks agp, and yesterday was the first time I’ve seen a Monarch.

I bet your sons will have stories to tell about this week in Milwaukee!

      Stay safe, Kay.

A Monarch! How wonderful, beautiful flowers and topped off with a great husband.

Why an ordinary citizen would need “a weapon of war” is beyond me, it boggles the mind.

    Take Care,

very much agree about banning semi- and full-on assault weapons. doubt even saturday’s assassination attempt on a former president will get that change put through, though.

and i’ll add, “assign a different special prosecutor that’s definitely been vetted and properly put in place” to the case just dropped. and that judge should be recused from any future cases involving the afore-mentioned former president.

bet your haircut looks great. you and don make a good team.

glad you can for the most part stay indoors during such high heat and humidity. doing the same here.

best wishes on the etsy sales (just checked and saw you’ve made many sales! congratulations!)

just like you did the deer, i call earl “sweetheart”, too … haha.

had a busy weekend and a productive morning so far today so i am very happy that my family and i have no appointments this week. also, one of the first tests i had about that sporadic abdomen-to-leg pain was a ct scan. it showed several things … a spot on my right lung, something on my liver and a lesion on a cyst on an ovary. i was told the spot on my lung will be re-checked in a year (marked my calendar), but they expect it to be stable and believe it to be just like what’s said to be in the lungs of at least half of all adults living in primarily-agricultural states … a benign spot from breathing in stuff, including farm chemicals. no answer about the liver yet. couple things done to assess the ovary, including a blood test for cancer. i’ve now heard that blood test came back fine … very relieved about that part. so that’s my update as of this morning. thanks for the prayers, especially for my family. xo.

will probably finish the eighth “little house on the prairie” book today. that leaves number nine. i will miss reading them (though i know i can always re-re-re-read them, and they are keepers). while there are difficult things to read, including some racist parts, these books have brought back so many happy memories of listening to my mother read them to my brother, sister and me and me later reading them over and over. there are about ten other books to help continue the “little house” stories, but i don’t plan to read them as they were not written by laura ingalls wilder or her family.

well, best i get to other things.

hope you all keep cool, stay safe in every way and are happy.

    xo,
    kathy

The Etsy sales total includes all the scarves I made many years ago, so it’s not all that much recently.

All the tests must be nerve-wracking for you, Kathy. But it looks like the results are fairly positive, and my prayers for you will continue.

      Stay safe.

yes, it is nerve-wracking, but will get through it. and definitely glad to hear any test result called “normal”.

thanks for more prayers, especially for my family. much, much appreciated.

whatever, they are still sales you made and i’m glad for you.

hope you and don are having a nice night. 98.6 degrees here so am thankful for air conditioning (among many other things, including you and mhc). xo.

sorry don’s gig was cancelled. nice of the bar owner to call don about that and to pay performers like him. prayers for don’s recent acting work/audition/wonderful talent to get him more work soon and for the bar owner to do alright for her own sake and to be able to bring him back again and again.

    beautiful monarch photos, too.

Yes, all assault weapons should be banned. Beautiful photos of your cone flowers and monarch butterfly, Claudia. This hot, muggy weather is the price we have to pay for our lovely, mild, snowless winter last year. Stay cool. Hugs, Elaine

Just imagine….if only assault weapons had been banned…how many lives would’ve been saved?? I just can’t stomach the news today…it’s all too much.

Your coneflowers are looking very nice…and it is great to see a monarch. Course, I haven’t been out too much lately except to water my containers. We got 4 inches of rain Friday and Saturday….so no watering today. More storms tonight….oh goody.

Tomorrow is haircut day for me. I’m not as fortunate to have such a talented team on hand as you. Enjoy your day! ;)

Yep it is hot. Hotter here in Florida. We don’t get the cool down at night like most northern areas do. I also feel kind of lazy lately which I hope is due to the heat. Still we try to get out and play some Bocce ball, ride bikes, swim, etc. to keep from going crazy. We are a little more used to heat.

We head north soon for some cooler weather. At least I hope it will be cooler once we hit Maine. I love sleeping when the nights are cold.

Enjoy the break in the heat.

These stretches here in the Hudson Valley of heat and humidity have had very little cool down at night.

Oh, Maine will be a nice change for you, Kay!

      Stay safe.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
