On a Mission and Some Blogkeeping

January 10, 2016 at 9:34 am by Claudia

1-10 office

What the heck?

I just got this space set up and now I have to leave it! That doesn’t seem fair.

I really love my little office space, which is bright and inspiring and just what I envisioned. I wish I could wiggle my nose and transport it to Hartford. There are desks in the apartments – IKEA desks, by the way – but the top is made of glass.  I will do my best to create a nice little workspace there, complete, I think, with a few pieces of pottery that will function as containers for cords, charging equipment, and pencils and pens.

I have much to do before I go. Today, thanks to your suggestions, Don and I will venture forth on a mission to find a pair of jeans. I don’t have a lot of time to look, nor do I want to order anything online without trying it on first, but we’ll check out Gloria Vanderbilt at Kohl’s. Bless my husband. He went along with me a few months back when I was searching for jeans. And now he’s offered to do it again.

It’s raining very, very hard here today. I can hear the sump pump going on in the basement. A thoroughly yucky day and not one I would normally venture out in if given a choice, but we have to.

Blogkeeping: I get a lot of requests asking me to recommend books to read. I just wanted to mention for those of you who are newer readers of this blog that both blogs – this one and Just Let Me Finish This Page – show my current read and the book I’ve just finished on the sidebar.

Also, the navigation bar on Just Let Me Finish This Page has a section called 2014-2016 Reads, with sub headings according to year. If you hover over the heading, the sub headings will show themselves. 2014 and 2015 have a list of all the books I read in that particular year and the month in which I read them. I don’t speed read and have no desire to – that would take all the pleasure from reading – but I read 73 books in 2015. If you’re ever looking for titles, for something to look for at the library, these lists might help.

Also, both blogs have a heading in the navigation bar titled Book Reviews. There you will find a list of the book reviews, complete with a link to that review. The list on this blog is the most complete, as it references reviews on both blogs – though not every review. I’ve been doing this for about 7 years and I’ve reviewed well over 100 books. But there’s a hefty list – about 98 titles – on Mockingbird Hill Cottage. Just Let Me Finish This Page’s list is limited to the reviews – about 40 – done on that blog.

Hope this is helpful.

Happy Sunday.

I wish you luck with the jean shopping. Don’s your moral support…just remember dressing rooms are not your friend. If only the lighting would be more flattering, and the mirrors would be of higher quality….retailers would sell more clothes! ;)

I simply don’t understand why they don’t invest in better quality – mirrors and lighting. Wouldn’t you think they want to sell more clothing??

Thank you, Donnamae! The preparation and packing and unpacking is exhausting, but once I’m in and settled, I’ll be able to relax before rehearsal on Tuesday.

Claudia, Good luck with the jeans. I bought a pair of Lees at Kohl’s, they fit so well….but I am enjoying my skinny legged jeggings from the Walmart so much, I am rarely wearing my jeans. I love your new office space…I really like the light in it. I almost get a knot in my tummy when I hear the sump pumps come on here ..I always am afraid there will be too much rain…even thought we have a piggy backed pump for back up. Plus a submersible one. Wishing a fun travel time to your job . Blessings, xoxo, Susie

I have a pair of Lees from Kohl’s. Today I bought two pairs of Gloria Vanderbilt Amanda jeans. They seem to fit very well. Fingers crossed that they don’t stretch out too much!

I get nervous and relieved at the same time when the sump pump comes on!

I’m taking the newer car so I can get back and forth when I have enough time off to make the trip worthwhile. Also, I want to be able to get home if Scout needs me.

Well, I actually found my favorite jeans in Walmart of all places. Several of my friends even went and purchased their jeans there after seeing mine. They carry several brands, but the Lee jeans had more options for me. Good luck with your search and with Hartford. I live about 45 min. from Hartford, but have never explored the city.

You work space is so fresh and clean and inviting. I am ashamed to admit that mine is currently a mess and needs some attention pronto! Good luck on your mission to find a new pair of jeans. Why does buying a pair of well fitting jeans always seem like such a struggle?

I only buy Gloria Vanderbilt now. They fit my curves, aren’t too tight, and last a long time. I can usually get they on sale for $25. They have tall sizes too. Happy shopping.

A while back You wondered what you would blog about. I am interested in what you do when coaching. I have no idea how a person changes their accent. Plus things about the workings of a play and the theater.

Just bought those jeans on sale at Kohl’s Kay. They fit well. Surprisingly, I don’t need tall since I don’t wear heels.

I’ll do my best to blog about the rehearsal process, Kay.

I love this shot of your very neat little U-shaped office. Classic bummer – as soon as you get it set up, you have to leave it for a while. As Charlie Brown would say – arrgghhh! Did the Ikea desk come with the typing return that’s shown to the right of it? Those are the handiest pieces for people who also craft, sew etc. I’m jealous. I do ALL my projects on my farmhouse dining room table, and while it’s very roomy, it’s not a desk. No drawers, cubbies etc obviously. No room for a desk in my bedroom or living room either, at least not without losing something that means more to me. So all in all, the dining room doubling as an office works well. For one thing, it guarantees that I clean up and put away my projects when done EVERY time. The most well-used piece of furniture I own. I think I actually spend more time working there than sleeping in my bed.

No, that’s my sewing table that used to be in the hallway niche, Janet. I just knew it would go perfectly with the desk and operate as an extension – right now, it’s for my mini project, but it could function in all sorts of ways.

I found GV – the Amanda style, Dawn. They fit well, at least so far. One of my problems with stretchy jeans in general is that they stretch out too quickly. Fingers crossed that these work. The Lees I had stretched out WAY too fast, so much so that I can only wear them once or twice before they look horribly baggy!

So glad you found the Amanda jeans. I find that two pair I have don’t stretch much at all but another pair I have does? Not sure why but they are still my fav jean at the moment. I love your office space and you’ve inspired me to get to work on cleaning out my spare room this year. I think taking the car to Hartford is good so you can get home quickly if you need to. It is cold and windy today so I’m resting after church and lunch with the family.

It’s so rainy here today, Linda. Pouring rain. Then some breaks. Then it pours and pours again. But no rain tomorrow when I have to travel, so that’s good. I’ll miss my little office, but I’ll have my Mary Tyler Moore in Hartford, so that will be sort of fun!

Glad to hear you found some jeans. I may have to check that brand out next time I’m jeans shopping. I just love your new office space. It’s so cheerful and bright. Perfection! I much prefer natural light over lamps all of the time. Our daughter says they have had lots of rain too. She texted me pictures of the bay over it’s banks and flooding the streets. Scary.

I agree w/ everyone else that your office area is wonderful. Glad you and Don decided to change the use of the room. Such fun…. like having a bit of a new house feeling!
Sounds like your shopping trip was a success. I have to tell you a “trick” I found w/ the jeans that seem to lose their shape after only wearing a couple of times. I have thrown them in an empty dryer with a clean pretty-damp kitchen or tea towel for about 5 minutes and they truly re-shape that quickly. I don’t like to wash jeans after every wearing, but if I have (esp) sat a lot when wearing them, their fit seems to be affected. Don’t know if it would work for everyone, but I saw that tip somewhere and it really works on my Lee jeans!
It was single digits most of the day here today. So very cold. But the sun was out, and that did make it more bearable!
I liked the suggestion of a kind of back-story of how you do your job while you are in Hartford! Also looking forward to how you Claudia-ize your apartment. That is always fun.
Safe travels tomorrow. So glad the roads will be good for your trip. Is it a long drive?

Glad you found jeans that fit you. Like other ladies on here commented, Lee jeans from Walmart fit me well.

I didn’t know your house has a basement! Is it a big enough space for storage or to fix up into any kind of room? Our house is a ranch but we also have a full basement. Most of it is finished space (family room) and the rest is storage and laundry room. That’s where our sump pump is, too. It has been going off constantly lately from all the rain and now snow. We’ve had our basement flood twice from sump pump malfunction, so now we have a battery back-up. The battery only lasts 6 hours, but better than not having one at all! Wish we could afford a generator.

It’s not a liveable basement, Melanie. It’s the kind you enter from outside. Very small – probably 6 x 8, with a very low ceiling. It contains the oil burner, the hot water heater and the oil storage container. Built in 1891, it’s very old and damp!

We wish we could afford a generator, too!

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.
