Another, even better, photo of the burning bush. No enhancement whatsoever.

We will have frost on Wednesday so we’ll be seeing the last of the zinnias and, most likely, the leaves on this bush. I’ll be saying goodbye to my gardens, which is always bittersweet.

We had constant rain yesterday and today will be the same.

I finished The Last Devil to Die  by Richard Osman. This was his best yet. In addition to a complicated plot, his writing about Alzheimers disease, both from the viewpoint of the afflicted and from the observer is heartrendingly brilliant. I won’t give anything away, I promise. But there were so many times that tears came to my eyes as I read Osman’s words. Love and the family you choose: I’m still thinking about that two days after finishing the book.

An extraordinary read.

I’ve just started John Banville’s The Lock-Up.  I read Banville’s Snow  a couple of years ago and discovered his lyrical prose. He is a poet who happens to write police procedurals, among other things. I’m a big fan.

I’m also fiddling around with The World of Frankenstein, my latest jigsaw puzzle. It’s much more difficult than the one I just finished, so I expect I will be working on it for a while.

What else? Laundry today. Exciting, right?

I’m starting to make a list of things I have to take care of before I head to Wonderland of Play on Sunday.

“The world is too much with us.” That quote is one I repeat on a daily basis. I’m grateful for the escapes that take me to another a place; a kinder, gentler place.

Rest in Peace, Matthew Perry, taken from us much too soon.

Stay safe.

Happy Monday,

Fall Colors

October 28, 2023 at 8:15 am by Claudia

A shortish post today.

Don took this photo from our bedroom window this morning:

Gosh darn it, this burning bush is amazing at this time of year.

Me taking a picture of Don taking a picture.

This will be our last unseasonably warm day and tomorrow will bring a 30 degree plunge into much colder temperatures. I actually had the a/c on for a bit yesterday afternoon,

I’ve been feeling a wee bit under the weather so I’m low energy this morning. Plus, I haven’t had my second cup of coffee.

October is the time for groundhogs to start hibernating.

Our guy who lives under the shed hasn’t read the memo. I’ve saw him chomping on the grass yesterday.

Well, he does have a few days before the end of the month.

I wonder where all the kids have ended up? I kind of miss those little rascals.

Stay safe.

Happy Saturday.

Flowers, Monarchs & A Puzzle

October 27, 2023 at 8:46 am by Claudia

I’m not sure they could look any prettier and it’s going to be 78 degrees today (too hot) but next week it will be much, much colder and I thought I’d take a moment to salute this year’s limelight hydrangeas while they’re still here.

Gorgeous.

This bush is much younger than my Annabelle hydrangeas, but you’d never know it. It is huge!

And one of the many reasons, but perhaps the most important, for growing zinnias from seed – they bloom late in the summer into the fall and a newly emerged monarch butterfly flying southward can stop and dine for a couple of hours. They provide much needed sustenance for the trip and are one of the few flowers available at this time of year.

This beauty was hanging around the zinnias for a few hours and didn’t seem to mind my presence. When you’re really hungry, things like that don’t matter. Hydrangeas don’t do it for monarchs. The coneflowers are gone. There are a few stray roses, but giant zinnias provide lots of surface on which to dine and I will make sure to sow those seeds again next year.

Things like this make my week. Having some food on hand for a hungry monarch makes me very happy.

I finished the puzzle.

The World of Virginia Woolf.

It’s quite lovely. Next up, something a bit more intense: The World of Frankenstein. Perfect for this time of year, don’t you think?

I’m currently retreating from the world and news of the world.

Stay safe.

Happy Friday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
