Crafting Minis for a Swap. Yes, I Did!

May 9, 2014 at 7:28 am by Claudia

I’ve been awake since 4:45 am. I’m not real happy about that. Lack of sleep, the inability to concentrate or remember things, a short temper, spontaneous tears; all are, I’m sure, part of the grieving process. Don has to fill in the blanks for me when I say something like, “You know….that series with Kevin Spacey….the one we like…. you know…”

“House of Cards?”

Frustrated. “Yes. Why can’t I remember that?”

And so it goes.

But, hey, it’s 6:34 am and I’m already writing my post for the day while Scout snoozes in the ‘Tunnel.’ That can’t be all bad.

Let’s talk about what I did yesterday for seven hours straight, in my painting clothes, hair unwashed. Because once I get going on something I am like a dog with a bone, I push myself beyond the point at which I should stop.

The talented Amy Powers, who blogs at Inspire Co., created Club Little House (for all of us who love miniatures) several years ago and occasionally, she conducts a swap. The last one I can remember was when I was first getting into my dollhouse and I didn’t feel remotely qualified to take part. I still don’t.

But when Debby told me that Amy had a new swap going on, I bit the bullet and signed up. Now, I am really not a miniaturist. I tweak, I play, I build a few things, but I’m very much a beginner. In this swap, we are to come up with some miniature that we can make 12 of. We send our creations to Amy and she puts everything together and soon we are opening a box with 12 different miniatures created by members of the swap. Sounds like fun, doesn’t it?

I racked my brain trying to come up with something. When I finally did, I had to order some supplies that took a while to get here because they were sent from England, though I somehow didn’t get that fact because this website has an American version as well, so I thought everything was being shipped here. I was a little panicked about whether my supplies would arrive in time. But they did. Everything arrived on Wednesday.

My first idea was to make a small hanging/coat/hook/rack. The mini hooks were brass, so the first thing I did was spray paint them white.

frihooks

Then I used some of the wood trim I had on hand and cut several pieces 2¼” long – since the scale is 1:12, that means that one mini inch equals one foot in the real world. So this would be 2¼’ long in reality.

fripaintedwood

I stained and painted each piece of wood. Then I sanded the painted pieces down in order to give them a more rustic look.

Then I glued the hooks on.

frif12hangers

Twelve hanging hook/coat/racks. (I never know what to call them.)

I made a prototype for myself and here is what it looks like in the dollhouse:

frihangersondhwall

I think I’ll make one to hang towels on in the bathroom.

The other mini that I made was inspired by the wooden crate I bought from a seller on Etsy. He did such a nice job with it. The same miniature site that had the hooks in stock also had mini crates, so I ordered them as well. I searched the internet for free printable miniature images and finally settled on a label that I really liked. I finally figured out how to print several of the same image on one page (I know. It’s probably perfectly obvious to you. But not to me.) I cut out each of the labels with the aid of a metal ruler and an Exacto knife.

Here’s the prototype I made:

friprototypecrate

friprototypecrate2

Because French labels are pretty. They just are. There is a label on the front and the back.

Each crate was first painted with a base coat of white.

frilotsofcrates

Then they were painted in aqua and the corners were sanded to age them a bit. Next, I glued the labels on to each crate.

And voilà!

frifinishedcrates

Nothing complex or intricate; nevertheless, it took me a long time to add each element, to paint, layer, sand and glue .

I’m pretty happy with these and I’ll wrap them up and send them off to Amy on Monday. Can’t wait to see what other swap participants have created!

Happy Friday.

Overwintering, Self-Seeding & Stetsons

May 8, 2014 at 8:24 am by Claudia

letitiacowgirl

After climbing the stairs the other day, I discovered this. Don had clearly been up to something.

Meet Letitia. Cowgirl.

I bought two of these Stetsons many years ago when I was working in Dallas. We have them hanging on the wall in the bedroom. They’re pretty neat. I sometimes wear mine when I’m working outdoors. Stetsons remind me of my grandfather. He wore one when I was a kid (he really was a Canadian cowboy.)  He had horses on his property in those days. A Stetson, a bolo tie, a softly worn shirt – that’s my Pa, as we called him. Don’s family originally hails from Texas and Oklahoma. He recently inherited some of his dad’s bolo ties. So our Stetsons are a tribute to our roots.

I’ve let Letitia wear the hat for the time being. It gives her a kind of pioneer girl look, don’t you think?

Porchimpatiens

After successfully overwintering the impatiens, I’m happy to say they have made the move to their original home, the porch. A couple of the plants recently bloomed.

Porchimpatiensbloom

Frankly, I’m still amazed that they managed to hang on this winter. Bravo, little pots!

Porchimpatiensbigpot

And big pots!

porchview

How nice it is to see this view: hostas, sedum, coneflowers, porch….and wait, what do I see near the foundation?

mgloriesselfseed

Squeal of delight! Morning Glories. These little babies self-seeded. I also found some seedlings in the raised bed near the kitchen. I never expected that – especially in this gardening zone. I couldn’t be more delighted. I am going to train these guys up and around the porch railing. I haven’t planted the seeds yet for this year’s crop that will live in the chicken wire fence garden. Later this week. We’re going to be crazy with morning glories this year.

Isn’t it wonderful when something self-seeds in an unexpected place? My coneflowers have done that in the past. They did it again this year.

Today is a rainy day. I have a miniature project to work on. Don has some music to write. And my garden will keep growing. That takes a lot of energy.

Happy Wednesday.

Putting It Out There

May 7, 2014 at 8:33 am by Claudia

Wgazingball

Here’s looking at you. The world looks pretty amazing when it’s reflected in a gazing ball.

Spring is here. Although we had a minor glitch when we had a Frost Advisory last night.

It’s May 7th.

I had to run out and cover a plant I had just put in the ground a few days before. After the Red Sox game ended (12 innings!), there were Don and I, flashlight in hand, throwing a sheet on the plant. Well, not actually throwing a sheet; we artfully arranged it so it covered the plant, but didn’t touch it.

wedbiggardenbed

Big garden bed last week.

Wgardenview

Big garden bed this week: perennials are spreading, growing taller, and you can spy some green on those trees.

Wtreebuds

Up in the back forty, some are actually leafing out. Will wonders never cease?

Wtulips

The tulips are just about to open. My goodness. It’s May. (Do I need to keep saying that?) Apparently, yes. I am still wrestling with the fact that Spring has come so much later this year.

My peonies are emerging from the ground. They bloom, like clockwork, during the first week of June. Will that still hold true this year? I’m wondering.

Wvinca

The woods are full of vinca; swaths of purple flowers are everywhere.

Wbumblebee1

The buzz of big, fat bumblebees accompanies me on my walks around the property.

Wbumblebee2

Waiting for Spring here in Northeast isn’t for sissies. It requires a lot of fortitude and more than a little patience. This year, more than ever, I look for the tiniest signs. It’s getting a little easier to find them lately, but for quite a while there, I had to look very closely indeed.

I almost had to use a magnifying glass.

In other news, I cringe slightly when I share this with you, but here’s the scoop. I added another ad above the content area on the blog. I don’t like the look of it, but it’s necessary right now. I spent a long time on the phone with Dawn yesterday, trying to figure out how to change some CSS coding so that the ad wasn’t right on top of the post title. We finally figured it out, but it’s messed a bit with my post title spacing. Nothing I can’t ignore.

The truth: I need more income from this blog and I don’t kid myself; that will be easier said than done, as this blog isn’t one thing, i.e., a decorating blog or a food blog, it’s a lot of things. It’s a reflection of all my loves, all my passions. I’m perfectly happy with that, indeed, I deliberately fashioned the blog in that way, but the downside is that my kind of blog earns less ad income. So I continually walk a little tightrope here, balancing the need to be honest and real with trying to find more ways to generate an income. I haven’t had coaching work in several months. Jobs of any kind in my neck of the woods aren’t particularly easy to find. We need more money coming in. STAT.

Wouldn’t it be perfect if this blog I put so much work and love into, this place where I write a new post each and every day, could provide me with an income that matches what I might earn working elsewhere? I’m putting it out there into the Universe.

Why not?

(Please don’t think I’m asking you to click on ads. You don’t have to do that and I don’t want you to. Only click on an ad you are honestly interested in. If you visit the blog directly, that is enough. Thanks.)

Happy Wednesday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
