A Cornucopia of Chat on a Saturday

December 21, 2013 at 8:32 am by Claudia

Say what???

The temperature is going to reach 62° tomorrow.

Remember my earlier comment this week that I was sure we would have a White Christmas? Hmmm. The temps during the last few days have been in the forties, so there’s already been some snow melt. But 62°? Yikes.

Dear Mother Nature: I would like you to leave at least a couple of inches of snow on the ground for Christmas. After all the shoveling and salting we have done, you owe us that, don’t you think? Thank you, your pal, Claudia.

Shopping is just about done here. I don’t think there will be any surprises, as we were both very specific about what we wanted. That happens more and more as we get older because we already have so much ‘stuff.’ And we have a very limited budget. Scout needs some presents from Mom and Dad and Santa; that will be taken care of today. I need to see just how much wrapping paper I have left from last year. And tape. A year or so ago, I ran out of tape and had to use blue painter’s tape on the presents. I hang my head in shame.

I wish I was one of those people who love to wrap gifts and make pretty bows. I’m not. I get very impatient with the wrapping process. I start out with high hopes but, after wrapping one present, I’m already tired of the whole thing. Sad, but true. All that effort and then it’s torn off immediately. Sort of how I feel about cooking – lots of time and effort and in ten minutes, it’s gone. And to add insult to injury, you have to clean everything up.

Yesterday, Don and I took a little trip to a neighboring town north of us. They have a funky little country store that I wanted to explore. The advertisement said they had model trains and dollhouses, among lots of other things. Well, the dollhouse section was pretty pathetic. Nothing for me there. But the train section was amazing. Don has been talking about model trains a lot lately. He’d really like to start in on that hobby. But it takes money and space (which we are sadly lacking.) Heck, I’d love to see him indulge in a fun hobby like that, especially since my dad had a wonderful HO train set up in our basement. I grew up with model trains.

So we looked and asked questions and Don bought a book about starting a model train collection. I had this idea that we could buy some plywood that would fit over the bed in the office/studio/guest room. He could build a little set up right on the plywood. And then we could remove it on the rare occasion that a guest stays the night.

Speaking of Don, I took some pictures of him the other day and this one is going to be his newest headshot:

Hello, handsome! (I’ve got a crush on this guy.)

Today’s Holiday Bokeh:

snowscenebokeh

Judy gave me that little snow-globe-in-a-salt-shaker last year.

Upcoming dates to remember:

January 5, 2014: Scout’s 15th birthday (I see a party hat in her future.)

January 7, 2013: The Poisoner’s Handbook airs on PBS, starring, among others, Don Sparks.

And, if you’re interested, I posted a book review yesterday. Be sure to leave a comment if you’re interested in winning a copy of  The Seduction of Miriam Cross.

Happy Saturday.

Book Review: The Seduction of Miriam Cross by W. A. Tyson

December 20, 2013 at 9:06 am by Claudia

TSMC-214x300

Today I am reviewing The Seduction of Miriam Cross by W. A. Tyson for TLC Book Tours. As always, I am provided with a copy of the book in exchange for my honest review.

About the Book (from the publisher):

A sordid sex tape.

A venture capital firm.

A secret society of women.

A Catholic nun.

Miriam Cross, author, feminist, and philanthropist, disappears from her Philadelphia home. A year later, a lonely recluse named Emily Cray is brutally murdered in her bed in a small Pennsylvania town.

The police discover that Emily Cray and Miriam Cross were one and the same, but if they know who killed Miriam, they’re not sharing. Miriam’s niece wants answers. She turns to the one woman she knows she can trust – private investigator Delilah Percy Powers.

As Delilah and her staff of female detectives – a militant homemaker, an ex-headmistress and a former stripper – delve into Miriam’s life, they become submerged in an underworld of unfathomable cruelty and greed with implications that go far beyond the gruesome death of one woman or the boundaries of one country. Eventually, Miriam’s fight for justice becomes Delilah’s own…and Delilah’s obsession with finding the truth may be just as deadly.

My review: I reviewed another of Wendy Tyson’s books a few months ago; Killer Image. I liked that book very much, so I was happy to have the opportunity to read another of Tyson’s mysteries. It does not disappoint. Tyson writes an intricate plot, one with all sorts of twists and turns that leaves the reader truly wondering how it will resolve in the end. Let’s face it, no one really wants to be able to figure out who the bad guy is before reaching the end of the novel – we want to be surprised.

This is the start of a series involving Delilah Percy Powers and her team of detectives. Each of them is complex, with a back story that we get hints of along the way. Not everything is revealed, however, and I’m sure that future books in this series will provide more details. I like it when everything about a character isn’t revealed at once – when the author decides when and where more will be revealed. Louise Penny does that. It makes you want to come back for more. That is far more interesting to me than characters who are fully fleshed out almost immediately. We all have secrets. We all have parts of ourselves that we are not willing to reveal.

The plot is fueled by the horrific murder of Miriam Cross and the search to discover what Miriam was hiding and the secrets she kept, secrets that ultimately led to her death. Like peeling an onion, layer upon layer is stripped away until the truth is finally discovered.

On a personal note, having lived in Philadelphia for five years, I am very familiar with the city and its environs, so I greatly enjoyed the settings Tyson uses. It was as if I was back in the city once again.

The cover is a little Charlie’s Angels-ish, but once you get past that, you’ll find that Tyson writes very well indeed. I think you’ll really enjoy this mystery/thriller.

About the author: W.A. Tyson’s background in law and psychology has provided inspiration for her mysteries and thrillers. The Seduction of Miriam Cross, to be published by E-Lit Books this fall, is the first in the Delilah Percy Powers mystery series. She has also authored Killer Image (Henery Press, October 2013) the first novel in the Allison Campbell mystery series.

Good news, my friends: one of you will be the lucky winner of a copy of The Seduction of Miriam Cross. Just leave a comment on this post and I will draw a winning name on Sunday evening.

A Miniature Lollapalooza of a Day

December 19, 2013 at 8:32 am by Claudia

Yesterday was a Miniature Lollapalooza of a day. The mail brought 3 packages addressed to yours truly; I was very excited to say the least.

I ordered some plates from Carrie Lavender, who lives in Australia and has an Etsy shop. I chose them because they each had a bird in the design. They’re made of ceramic and are quite lovely – Carrie shipped them very quickly and they arrived here much sooner than I had even begun to hope for.

(Sorry for the shadows, I took this picture in the late afternoon.)

There is a method to my madness. I knew exactly where I wanted to use them.

dhplatesonwall

Right here on the wall in the den. I had that visual firmly fixed in my mind and I was determined to see it come to life. The little bird plate in the middle is actually the saucer that goes with that mug on the table (made by Sofia in Spain.) I decided it needed to join the other bird plates.

The owner of Hummingbird Cottage loves birds and collects bird plates. Do you blame her?

dhplateslights

In this shot you can see I’ve since rearranged the placement of the plates. I like this placement better.

Don’t you love the way our little white Christmas tree is reflected in the window?

Don looked at the plates on the wall, then looked at the whole dollhouse and said, “Can we move in? Can we squeeze in there somehow?”

I wish we could.

I also received a package from Judy and one from a faithful reader of this blog, Maryanne. Judy’s contained some lovely sheep (you know I love sheep) and some ornaments and a vintage edition of Shakespeare’s plays (Don can’t keep his hands off it – it’s so lovely) and a couple of items for the dollhouse. Maryanne sent me all sorts of minis; food items for the kitchen, little mini Christmas presents for under the tree, little animals, and a piece or two of furniture – it was a treasure trove! (Maryann, I’m sending you a thank you note in the mail because I don’t have an email address for you.)

dhdrysink

This dry sink came from Maryanne. The drawers and cupboard door open. Isn’t it lovely? The wrapping paper, bows and ribbon came from Judy.

dhwrapping

Adorable with a capital A. I figure the owner will be wrapping things in her craft room, don’t you?

dheggnog

Judy also sent this mini carton of Egg Nog. Let the holiday celebrations commence!

dhrollingpin

And one of the many little minis in Maryanne’s package was this rolling pin. I added that piece of furniture that the mixer and rolling pin are on to the kitchen the other day. The owner simply didn’t have enough counter space and she likes to bake.

dhpackages

Little packages from Maryanne.

I. Love. My. Dollhouse.

I. Love. Miniatures.

There, I’ve said it.

And I’m so grateful for the wonderful and generous friends who think of me and Hummingbird Cottage. So many items in this dollhouse are from generous friends and, just as in my life-sized cottage, every item has a story to tell. The dollhouse is enriched and made beautiful by those special gifts. One day I will do a post on these treasures and I’ll tell their stories. Thank you, dear friends.

Today’s Holiday Bokeh:

The little white Christmas tree in the living room. That’s the hydrangea in the foreground.

Happy Thursday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
