Natal Day Replay

November 21, 2013 at 8:36 am by Claudia

meredsweater

This photo, taken by Don, is a couple of years old. And perhaps a couple of pounds lighter.

But I like it. This is how I see myself. A smile, a flash of humor showing in the eyes, as if I just might be up to something, dimples showing (Mom would be pleased.)

Another November 21st, another birthday. Though the calendar tells me I am 61, my heart and soul tell me I’m ageless.

Besides, how can I be 61? Me? Are you kidding me? I remember when I turned 21 on the 21st. Now, it’s forty years later. What??

Birthdays nowadays are always a bit bittersweet. I’m so aware of the swiftly moving march of time. Every birthday since the year I turned 44 has been a birthday my brother never got to celebrate. My mom resides in a nursing home, with dementia’s grip ever increasing, almost completely taking over. My dad is getting frailer and frailer.

Yesterday, I had one of those moments of self knowledge in which I found myself examining a not-so-nice trait of mine. I still have work to do on myself. There’s growth to accomplish. I can be a better person than I am.

That’s a good thing.

Don and I were going to spend the day together, but he has a last minute audition in the city today. So our little celebration will be this evening. But it will be a quiet one. Our families are far away from us, as are most of our friends.

Above all, I am blessed. With a wonderful husband and doggie, a roof over my head (albeit an expensive one) and food on the table, friends and family, work in the field I love, and by this blog which has brought all of you into my life.

Thank you. I’m off to drink another cup of coffee.

Happy Thursday.

Spectacular Sunrise & Dollhouse Decorating

November 20, 2013 at 9:05 am by Claudia

sunrise2

Yesterday morning’s sunrise. Barely awake and having just let Scout out, I stumbled back in the house, grabbed my old camera which sits at the ready in the kitchen for just this sort of thing, and got this shot. Timing is everything (something I seem to say weekly on this blog). A minute later, the spectacular colors were gone.

I used the same shot on my photo blog yesterday. (There’s also a link on the sidebar.) I started it with the intention of posting a photo a day in order to better my photography skills. After a hiatus, I’ve recently started posting there again. It’s on Blogger and I have to say that after wrestling with posting photos and tweaking the site, I now realize just how much I love WordPress. But on Blogger it will remain because I don’t want to hassle with a domain name or anything like that. At least not until I see if I can maintain my post consistency.

Last night was our coldest night so far, with temperatures dipping down into the mid-twenties. There is frost over everything this morning. Once again, I rescued the potted impatiens from the porch and brought them inside. I wonder just how long I’ll get away with this before the inevitable happens and I forget to check the weather forecast, waking up to shriveled plants? Any guesses?

Dollhouse noodling: a few things I had ordered from Miniatures arrived yesterday. Part of the order consisted of more chair rails and pieces of wood trim to frame the remaining two windows that I haven’t touched. But there were a couple of fun items as well.

I’ve had this idea for over a year and I finally made it happen:

copperpots

Eeeek! I’m swooning a bit here. The shelves are part of an inexpensive Michael’s cabinet that I took apart. In doing so, I lost the bottom shelf. Not to worry, I had an idea. I finally ordered a mini curtain rod and some copper pots and voilà! Now the little dollhouse kitchen has the warmth of hanging copper pots above the stove, with one ready to go on top of the Aga.

Dollhouses are such a wonderful way to indulge all your decorating fantasies. Barring a lottery win, I could never afford an Aga. There’s no space here to hang copper pots and it doesn’t really matter because I don’t have any. But I do in my dollhouse kitchen!

And I love, love farmhouse sinks. Maybe I will have one someday, but in the meantime:

runningwater

I have a farmhouse sink in the dollhouse kitchen. Yesterday, the faucets and handles arrived. Using my dollhouse plumbing skills, I installed them and now we have ‘running water’ in the kitchen. Double Eeeek!

Poor Don. He innocently sits in the living room trying to do his thing and I’m constantly calling him over to the dollhouse to look at what I’ve just done. Bless his heart, he gets up and peers into the kitchen and says all the right things. Yesterday, while trying to look into the kitchen, he accidentally hit this unit and it went flying out of the kitchen. I had a tense moment or two until I saw that there was no damage. Don’s hands are simply too big for this little kitchen. Actually, so are mine. Trying to glue that curtain rod into the shelf unit was a pain in the butt!

I’ve spent hours looking at dollhouse miniatures on Etsy. Oh my goodness. I did order a couple of small things and eventually they will be winging their way to me from…Spain! I can’t wait.

My friend Norma, who is a talented miniaturist, shared this link to her Pinterest board, chock full of great tutorials. You might want to check it out!

Happy Wednesday.

Presenting: Miss Scout as The Lamb with the Party Hat

November 19, 2013 at 8:57 am by Claudia

I have a dear friend who is an actor. His first name is Noble. (Isn’t that lovely?) I met Noble while coaching The Tempest a couple of years ago and, lucky for me, he was also in the cast of Macbeth and La Dispute. In one of those ‘small world’ things I love, it turns out Noble and his wife Tina live in our neck of the woods.

I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know Tina these last few months. We’ve had some wonderful conversations. She is also a reader of this blog. Tina is a woman of many talents, not the least of which is her amazing ability to concoct and construct wildly wonderful costume designs for doggies.

Miss Scout has been the most recent recipient of one of her her magical designs.

You see, Scout confided in Tina.

“Why is this darned lamb the symbol of Mom’s blog? It’s on the header. It’s on her watermark. I’m sick of seeing it everywhere. Now that friggin’ lamb is even staring at me from the wall of our living room. Enough, already!”

Tina, being the compassionate person she is, heard Scout’s cry for help.

So, Tina decided that Scout should have her very own Lamb with the Party Hat costume. She brought it over to the house on Sunday. I died when I saw it on Scout.

Oh. My. Goodness.

Yesterday, I attempted to wrestle Scout into her costume once again for some pictures. I wasn’t able to completely close all the velcro seams, Tina, so forgive me if some of Scout’s hair is popping out in places it should not be popping out.

scout1

Oh my. Look at the intense look of concentration on her face. What an actress!

scout2

Here you can see her ‘transforming’ into The Lamb with the Party Hat.

scout3

And now, the transformation is complete. Scout IS The Lamb with the Party Hat.

As you can see, Scoutie’s version of The Lamb with the Party Hat has it’s own heart-shaped marking on the side.

She makes the role her own, doesn’t she? Always imbuing it with her mark, her particular take on the character.

scout4

She has two party hats and that’s one more than the lamb has.

“See?” says Scout. “I’m just as cool as that lamb. In fact, I’m prettier.”

scout5

Sans costume, with Party Hat.

scout6

I die. Too, too adorable for words.

I don’t know how Tina does it. She usually makes these costumes for much smaller dogs and she estimated Scout’s size from pictures on the blog. The fabric is soft and wonderful, it’s lined, there are velcro closings, openings for Scout’s ears, and even an opening for her leash.

Ssshhh, don’t tell her I said this, but I also sense that Scout was feeling more than mildly competitive with her father. I mean, he gets to wear costumes all the time. And as you well know, Scout feels she is also a part of the theatrical world. Heaven knows, she is a bit of a diva.

Thank you, thank you, dear Tina. You have helped Scout through a difficult time. She has worked through her resentment of the Lamb and she has ‘triumphed ‘ (Scout’s words).

I’m already itching to put it on her again.

Happy Tuesday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
