Adding a (Mini) Fireplace

January 29, 2013 at 8:59 am by Claudia

Lately I’ve been watching reruns of Law & Order in the evenings – either Special Victims Unit or Criminal Intent. They are sort of perfect because I’m usually doing some sort of handwork and I can watch and concentrate on my task at hand at the same time. On Sunday night I was watching SVU and a new episode started. Didn’t look familiar to me. About ten minutes into the show I heard my husband’s voice. What a nice surprise! In this particular episode he played a psychologist. I do remember watching it when it first aired but enough time has gone by that I forgot how it started. Don’s done lots of different Law & Order episodes over the years. But I still get a kick out of seeing him!

Three Christmases ago (I had to search on my blog to find out exactly when this happened – aren’t blogs a handy way of keeping track of things?) Don searched locally for a dollhouse shop because he wanted to get me something for my dollhouse. Well, unfortunately, the only local shop closed about a month before I got my dollhouse. So he drove off on a quest and came back with this:

You can’t tell from this photo, but the actual color of the fireplace was tan, not white as it looks here. It’s made of plastic. I thanked him profusely but since I was just starting the dollhouse rehab at that point, I put it away. Eventually I decided that it didn’t suit my dollhouse’s style and that I probably wouldn’t use it and Don would forget that he gave it to me because he does that sort of thing.

But I had the urge to create something on Sunday and since the bookcase that I had planned to work on has somehow mysteriously disappeared, I pulled out the fireplace. What the heck, I thought. I’ll paint it. I wanted to eliminate the plastic look of the piece. My thought was to paint it white and then I ended up painting the bricks white as well – I wanted them to look like they’d been whitewashed, rather like the brick chimney in my living room here at the cottage.

Still needs some tweaking and another coat of paint, but I do want the house to look gently aged. Eventually, I will get some sort of fireplace screen.

Can you see the blue backing behind the shelves?

I used some paint chips I had hanging around and cut them to fit the opening. The back of the firebox needs another coat of paint and that’s on my to do list. Or maybe some soot?

The painting on the mantel has been in my miniatures box for a long time. I just aged the original gold frame. The ‘old window frame’ is actually a cupboard door on a Michael’s hutch that I had taken apart for some reason or other. I decided it could be put to use as a vintage window frame that the house’s owner discovered by the side of the road. So I painted and distressed it. The armillary next to it was sent to me by another blogger who blogs at Canterbury Cottage, Lady Hawthorne. She generously sent me this piece from her childhood dollhouse.

I painted a little terra cotta pot that I had on hand aqua and added some flowers.

I used what I had on hand to style the fireplace mantel and I’ve been looking for the right place for the armillary. I like the way it looks there.

Heck, I don’t have a fireplace here at the cottage, so I have to have some sort of mantel to play with!

Dollhouses are fun.

In other news, I’ve listed another scarf in Peacock Blue (update: SOLD):

Snow yesterday, then ice, today everything is iced over and the temps are going to be in the forties, tomorrow in the fifties. What the heck?

Happy Tuesday.

Book Review: The Expats by Chris Pavone

January 28, 2013 at 9:33 am by Claudia

Expats-Ppbk-FINAL-189x300

Hi everyone. Today I am reviewing The Expats by Chris Pavone for TLC Book Tours. As always, I am provided with a copy of the book in exchange for my honest review.

The story: Kate Moore, a working mother of two, is married to Dexter who is a financial systems security consultant. When Dexter gets the opportunity to work for a banking client in Luxembourg, Kate jumps at the chance to leave her job and start a new life in a new place far away from their current life in Washington, DC. Kate has a secret that she has been working very hard to keep a secret and she welcomes the opportunity to shed her old life for the new life of being an expat. But Dexter’s new job keeps him away from home for long periods of time and any details as to who he works for and what he does are held close to his chest.  In the meantime, Kate meets a couple, Julia and Bill, who she is increasingly wary of. As we learn more and more about Kate’s past, we see how it shapes her worries and suspicions in the present. As she begins to investigate, she discovers that Julia and Bill are not who they say they are, that Dexter has his own dangerous secrets. That’s all I’m going to say – you know I never reveal too much plot!

My review: What happens when secrets are kept – when, in fact, everyone is keeping a secret? The Expats is all about secrets, dangerous secrets. This is a wonderful book – an international spy thriller with a strong, gutsy female protagonist –  that is filled with suspense. Pavone has used the device of alternating between the past and the present, giving us tantalizing bits of information here and there, allowing us to try to put the puzzle together ourselves. It’s executed brilliantly. The plot is complex, with twists and turns at every corner. Kate’s character is beautifully realized. The other characters are equally well written. Pavone has crafted an intricate plot with layers and layers that are slowly peeled away until the truth is revealed. But not too soon – that wouldn’t be fun! After all, this is a spy thriller of the first order. Pavone writes about life in Luxembourg and Paris and the Alps with great detail  – each international location is richly drawn. Chris Pavone is a gifted writer and I guarantee you will not be able to put this book down.

About the author: Chris Pavone, a book editor for nearly two decades, returned to New York City after a sojourn in Luxembourg. The Expats is his first novel.

Oh you lucky people – one of you will have the opportunity to win a copy of this book! Just leave a comment on this post and I will draw a winner on Wednesday evening. Good luck!

Happy Monday.

Some Thoughts on a Sunny, but Cold, Sunday Morning

January 27, 2013 at 10:13 am by Claudia

The deep freeze continues. Some relief is in store tomorrow, though we’re going to get the dreaded ‘wintry mix.’ And on Wednesday? Highs in the fifties. Go figure. The temperature changes from day to day this winter have been mind-boggling. But the sun is out and that makes everything better.

• Yesterday I received a couple of packages in the mail. One was from my talented sister, Meredith. She has been experimenting with needle felting. Let’s see what that cutie sent to me:

feltedheart

This adorable felted heart pin. Isn’t it sweet? Our Etsy shop just might have a variation on this heart very soon. Just giving you a heads up.

feltedbird

Oh. my. goodness. I am in love with this beautiful bird, complete with a nest on a branch. As you know, I love birds. I love red. This is perfect.

feltedbird2

Be still my heart. Meredith will most likely be embarrassed by my posting these photos, but I’m so proud of her creativity. These are her first forays into needle felting and they are fabulous. Imagine all the wonderful creations that are in store.

Thank you, sweet sister of mine.

lincoln

• The Screen Actors Guild sent us an Awards Screener copy of Lincoln and I watched it last night. I really loved it. There’s so much important history in this story. Everyone in our current Congress should watch it. They could learn a thing or two. Or three. Lincoln has always been fascinating to me and now I want to read Doris Kearns Goodwin’s book on which the movie is based.

The cast is stellar. (There are at least 3 actors in major roles that I have worked with and coached. That makes me smile.)

Daniel Day-Lewis is simply incredible. He is a brilliant actor on any old day of the week, but this performance is pitch perfect and worthy of an Oscar. Sally Field is heartbreaking and wonderful as the First Lady.

• I finished Gone Girl. I wasn’t all that crazy about it. Gillian Flynn is a brilliant writer. No bones about it. She writes beautifully and her intricate plot, which weaves together a complicated story and lays a trail of tantalizing clues that reveal more and more about the characters, is first-rate. That being said, my problem was that I didn’t much like the two major characters. There was nothing that made me root for one or the other or ultimately care what happened to them. Neither of them had much in the way of redeeming character traits, so I was left feeling empty and unsatisfied. It’s the kind of book, for me, that dazzles me with the sheer skill of the writing, but leaves me feeling like I would if I wanted a full dinner but got an elaborate dessert instead. I love dessert, don’t get me wrong. But it doesn’t fill me up.

I’m sure I am in the minority here. This is a hugely popular book and I know it. And I’ll never give plot points away. Just my ‘unofficial’ review.

• Just a word about my weekly A Favorite Thing party and why I love it. Two words: cozy and manageable. I feel strongly that it is my duty to visit and comment on every post. And I do. I’m the hostess, after all, and it’s the polite thing to do. I welcome all new participants, of course, but this party isn’t about numbers. It’s about sharing stories with each other. I know that other linky parties are much bigger. But, since my aim is to share in your posts and comment on each one, this cozy little get-together is just perfect. However, if the numbers did go up from, say 40 or 50 to 80, I would still visit each and every one of you. If it ever got to the point where I couldn’t visit you, I’d have to reconsider the whole thing.

Okay. I just may clean out our closet today. You have no idea what a mess it is. Then I will reward myself with some work on my dollhouse. Clean and sort first. Play later.

Happy Sunday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
