Grandma’s Quilt

September 16, 2012 at 9:31 am by Claudia

This basket in our den holds various throws and shawls. I ignore it most of the summer. But the mornings are much cooler now and I find myself throwing on the shawl or grabbing a throw when I want to take a nap on the sofa. In that basket, you can see one of the quilts my grandmother made me.

Grandma grew up on a farm in Canada. She knew how to sew, to embroider, to tat, to crochet and to quilt. She carried those skills with her as she made a home in Michigan. Every winter, she made one quilt. Maybe two. I had a Sunbonnet Sue quilt when I was very young and I have no idea where that one ended up. I suspect it was passed on to one of my sisters and where it went from there…I have no idea. This particular quilt covered my twin sized bed.

Hand appliqued, hand quilted and made from her fabric scraps. Those same scraps were used to make clothes for my dolls. Don’t you love these fabrics? I wish I had her scrap bag. I used to spend hours sorting through the material, loving all the various patterns.

Grandma’s quilts were heavy, much heavier than any of the quilts I’ve made. I think she used heavy cotton blankets as the center of the quilt sandwich. Whatever she used, the weight is substantial – perfect for Michigan winters and, now, for New York winters.

It needs some repair. I wonder if those green flowers were once much brighter? Take a peek at the backing fabric:

It’s a fairly bright green. And oh, those perfect, even stitches.

I vaguely remember Grandma sitting in a chair, quilting. But only vaguely. Certainly I had no interest in it myself until much later in my life, long after Grandma had left us. I often think she would have been so happy to see me quilting. She would have loved the fact that Meredith knits, crochets and weaves. And that I knit, crochet, embroider and quilt.

It’s so important to pass these skills on to the next generation. Meredith taught my niece Elizabeth how to knit. Perhaps Elizabeth will teach her daughters to wield a knitting needle. I remember Grandma trying to teach me how to crochet with white thread, the kind she used in her pillowcase edgings. My mom taught me how to knit – a skill I promptly forgot until Meredith reintroduced it to me in 2001. (We had moved to a town on the Hudson River, just north of Manhattan, two months before 9-11. I needed the comfort that knitting can give.)

I love this generational sharing. My grandmother, my mother, my sister, my niece, me.

Did someone in your life pass a creative art on to you?

Happy Sunday.

A Favorite Thing Saturday #3

September 14, 2012 at 8:00 pm by Claudia

Where does the time go? It’s time for our third A Favorite Thing Saturday. I don’t know about you, but I’m having so much fun hosting this party. I hope you are having just as much fun being a part of it. Let’s take a look at some of last week’s contributions:

Olive Out shared the Spider Lilies that spring up around her yard at this time of year. Aren’t they beautiful? I haven’t seen anything like this flower in my neck of the woods. I’m a wee bit jealous. My friend, Olive, just had her gall bladder removed today (Friday) so stop by and wish her well.

Joy, of A Vintage Green, shared her chalkware heron plaques. Be still my heart. I love the colors, the raised design, the gorgeous herons. Again….jealous.

My friend, Regula, shared her handmade socks. It’s that time of year again – cool nights, warmish days – just the right time to start wearing our favorite cozy clothes. And what is better than handmade socks?

My contribution for this week’s party is my favorite painting. Well, to be more accurate, my favorite painting not painted by a member of my family. I have to say that because my dad has given me several of his oil paintings and I treasure them. But this one….this painting from France is one I found in my favorite shop in San Diego, Vignettes. I had my eye on that painting for several months and each time I stopped in, I stared at it. And stared at it. The price was more than I had ever spent on anything like a painting. Lori, the owner, even gave me a discount. Still, I debated. But finally, I realized that when you love something that much, it’s meant to be with you. I bought it. It’s about 3 ft. tall and narrow, so it hangs rather nicely on the enclosed chimney in the bedroom. But since it’s in the bedroom, the light is not the best. The frame is actually more of a turquoise color. I love cherubs. I love turquoise. I love all things French. Had to have it.

Okay! What do you have to share this week?

Here are the details:

You can link up any time from this evening through Sunday night. Make sure you put in the URL of your post. If you’re unsure how to do that, just click on your post title after you’ve published it and copy the information in your browser address window. Come on over, paste the URL info into your link info and there you go! If you have any questions about it, drop me an email and I’ll help you out. (When you copy your post URL into the link, make sure that http:// only appears once, otherwise the link won’t work.) Also, please link back to this blog on your post. That way those that read your post and are interested in reading more can do so.

One of my concerns about link parties is that the very reason for them has somewhat gone by the wayside. They’ve become so big and there are so many of them that many bloggers don’t take the time to visit other blogs. They are a way to meet new bloggers and share with each other and the only way to do that is to visit each other. So, please, take some time to visit everyone over the next few days. No rush. Stop by, introduce yourself, and leave a comment. It’s the neighborly thing to do.

 Have fun, everyone!

The Change of Seasons

September 13, 2012 at 8:14 am by Claudia

Night around here is suddenly much cooler. As are the mornings. I’ve been sitting on the porch, mug of hot coffee in my hands, gazing at the subtly changing landscape. The light is changing. Flowers have become a bit faded, leaves are ever so slightly yellowing. Though it’s still early in September, fall is definitely in the air.

Don was talking about the sort of melancholy feeling that can come with a change of season – at least this change of season. I know what he means. Perhaps it’s because we know that fall, as beautiful as it is, leads to winter. Fall used to be my favorite season and I still love it. But since I’ve had my gardens, spring and summer have become my favorite times of year. I know that I will have to say goodbye to my flowers in the not-too-distant future. Though fall’s crisp air fills me with energy, I also feel that melancholy that comes along with it.

I think I feel these things more deeply as I get older. I know the fragility of life in a way I didn’t when I was young. All of us of a certain age do. How can we not?  I’ve got what would be termed a ‘milestone’ birthday coming up later this year. I’m in denial; I’ll freely admit it. Time seems to move much more quickly the older we get. In the blink of an eye another year has passed and I feel time running away from me.

It makes every day more precious. I have to remind myself not to take these days for granted. I have to remind myself to treasure my time with this sweet girl, who also feels the change of seasons and is once again nesting on the sofa.

I have to remind myself not to get annoyed when my dad calls one too many times in the course of an evening. I must treasure the time I have left with him.

I have to remind myself to appreciate all the blessings I have at this moment in time.

I have to remind myself to stay in the present. For that’s all we have, really.

So, at this moment in time – Happy Thursday.

A reminder that A Favorite Thing #3 is this Saturday. I’ll have the post up and ready for your links at 8:00 pm EST on Friday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
