The Kitchen, Part Two – Pottery & Knick Knacks

November 17, 2009 at 11:20 am by Claudia

I promised to show you some of the things I have scattered around the kitchen. I’ll try to limit my narration.Everything has been captured in its actual place in the kitchen and sometimes that makes for shadows, especially on top of the cabinets!

I have lots of pottery throughout the house – in the kitchen you’ll see McCoy, of course, some of the Fiesta that I kept when I sold my collection, transferware, flowery dishes, bakelite-handled utensils; things that make me smile. In no particular order, here we go!

The crazy bunny rabbit cookie jar we found in a little local shop. I think it is from England originally…I couldn’t resist. My favorite apple pie ever, and I am a pie lover, is from The Julian Pie Company in Julian, California. We used to get them frequently when we lived in San Diego. A few years ago, my husband had one FedExed to our home here in the East for my birthday. We saved the box. Oh, and my birthday is this Saturday, the 21st! I don’t know if there is Julian Pie on the menu, but husband has informed me that he has reservations at some special place!

I so hope you enjoyed this little tour.

Favorite Things

Time for another favorite thing – our ‘red checked’ chair. I bought this years ago when we were still living in San Diego. I loved it the moment I saw it. The price was great and it was adjustable. But there was another reason I fell for this sweet piece of furniture. My grandparents lived in two different houses during my childhood. Both houses had a den. They had a set of furniture for the den that was exactly the style of this chair. The wood on their furniture was a shiny maple and the cushions were a different fabric, but oh the memories this chair evoked! It was exactly the same style down to the wide arms. One can place a book on the arms, or a drink, or a piece of needlework. I love the arms. (Don’t you wish the arm rests on a plane were this wide?) And I love the red checked cushions.

We had it in our den in San Diego. When we moved East and rented for four years, we had to put many pieces in storage – our little home was too small for them. This chair was stored and we missed its presence in our daily lives. Not long after we moved to Mockingbird Hill Cottage, we rented a truck and drove south to our storage facility. Our round oak coffee table, the loveseat, and this chair were among the things that were packed on the truck and brought to the cottage.

Mornings often find me seated in this chair with a cup of coffee, chatting with my husband. It’s a little worn, there’s a tear in the cushion – but, oh my, is it comfortable and comforting!

Vintage Black Friday

November 13, 2009 at 10:45 am by Claudia

Hello everyone – I’m sorry this is up so late in the morning, but I didn’t get back from Charlotte until after midnight. Both of my flights were delayed, but the good news is I made my connection and I am back home. I had planned another post for today, but no time for a photo session!

This week, I want to share a lovely vintage piano at my friend Heidi’s store. It is apartment sized, so it only has 5 octaves instead of 8. Isn’t it sweet? I would have loved something like this when I was in my studio apartment days.

I know it has been sold and should have been picked up by the new owners this week. I hope they enjoy it! Happy Vintage Black Friday! Please stop by Gypsy Brocante to see a list of everyone participating.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
