The New Year

January 2, 2023 at 8:33 am by Claudia

Well, I’ve been awake since 4 am, which means I’m not in the greatest mood. I won’t name names, but someone who lives here with me is responsible.

Anyway, how was your New Year’s celebration – if any? We were, as you would expect, very low-key, though we were somehow still awake at midnight. Go figure! We were asleep shortly after that, however. We had some sparkling cider and finally came to the realization that neither of us likes it very much. We no longer do carbonation and I think that’s part of it. So no more sparkling cider – just apple juice. Ninety-nine percent of the liquid we drink in this house is plain old water. Well water, which in our case, tastes better than any other water we’ve ever had. I remember my grandmother’s well water tasted very mineral-y. We’ve lucked out here.

I made another batch of the linzer tart cookies. It was a pain in the tush. But they taste good and Don loves them. Halfway through this second attempt I had a realization: this is a vegan recipe but we’re not vegans. We don’t have to use it. It needs a better binder than coconut cream. So I’ll search for another recipe and try another round. The cookies in the photo are Don’s. Mine don’t have any powdered sugar on top. There’s no sugar in the jam, either. It’s all fruit. And I use monk fruit sweetener instead of processed sugar for the dough. It comes in granules, just like sugar.

I received a lovely message on IG yesterday. It was from someone who had seen Spoiler Alert. She is a longtime oncology nurse and she told me my performance was ”spot on.” She also said the way I performed the scene was “genuine and authentic.” I can’t ask for greater praise than that. It was so nice of her to take the time to write a note to me – made my day. Spoiler Alert  is the gift that keeps on giving.

You know, I have so many interests that I could have eight different specialized IG accounts. As it is, I have three. One is my regular account, another is for Blythes (because, let’s face, not everyone is a fan, and many of my professional colleagues might think I’d gone crazy.) And the other is for books and reading. I started it when I was still reviewing books. I no longer do that because it took the joy out of reading for me – too many deadlines, too many books, too many other commitments in my life. But I love reading about what others are reading and I’ve found many books over the years through that account.

A gentleman from England has started a War and Peace  read-along for 2023. Turns out the chapter count is very close to 365, so a chapter a day is the goal. That’s entirely doable and not nearly as intimidating as it would be if I was looking at that big book and contemplating reading it.  So I ordered it from Amazon and it will arrive tomorrow, whereupon I’ll read 3 chapters to catch up. I’m rather excited about this! There’s also a discussion group. I tend to stay away from book clubs and discussion groups, but I’m going to keep an open mind this time around.

Okay. Since I’m really tired and in a somewhat surly mood, this might be the perfect day to clean up my desk in the office. It’s a mess and I’m feeling ruthless.

Stay safe.

Happy Monday.

Saturday Morning

December 31, 2022 at 9:47 am by Claudia

A somewhat blurry morning photo of the living room where Don is currently composing a song. He told me once that he always has a song in his head, is always thinking about a song, is always thinking about the lyrics to a song. That explains why I often have to say something twice or even three times to him. He’s in another world. I love hearing the gentle sound of his voice and guitar on this New Year’s Eve morning.

We’re going to have some rain later in the day, so it’s rather dark and gloomy out there. The temperatures remain relatively mild.

Here’s a first. Most of this puzzle has been finished for five days. Then I put together the moon. And then…I could not get motivated to finish the sky. It’s in very subtle shades of pink and lavender and I would stare at it, look at the pieces, and walk away. Don said “Maybe you need a break?” He might be right. Except for the fact that this morning I had the thought, “You need to finish this before the New Year comes.” Sort of a superstitious thought – and I am not superstitious. We’ll see what happens. I just know I’m not motivated and I may decide that it’s done as is.

Last night around 9:30 I got a text from Annie. Annie is my former student from Boston University days. If you remember, I stayed in her brownstone last year during the filming of Spoiler Alert. She and her family had just watched the movie and they were so excited about it. Annie had taken photos of my name(s) in the credits and another of me in my scene. That made me so happy! Whenever someone tells me they saw the movie, I’m thrilled. Annie was one of the few people I told about my scene as Nurse Claudia. I knew she’d keep it quiet and because I was staying with her, I had to share! I think Don, Annie, my best friend Laural, and my sister were the only people in on it for several months because I wasn’t supposed to talk about it. I especially love hearing that no one would have believed Ben was British, since that was the bulk of my work on the film and the reason I was there in the first place.

Don said, “Just think, years from now people will be watching you in this film.” Theater is ephemeral; that’s the joy and wonder of it. Film is a different story.

For those of you who live somewhere else in this world, keep your eyes open. The only thing I’m fairly sure of is that it will open in Great Britain in January. If I hear more details, I’ll be sure to let you know.

Okay. It’s New Year’s Eve. Have a happy one. Ours will be quiet and we’ll be in bed long before midnight. We do have some sparkling apple cider to toast in the New Year. I suggested watching It Happened One Night, and Don quickly agreed. (One of our favorite movies ever.)

I’ll take the day off tomorrow and I’ll be back on Monday.

Happy New Year!

Stay safe.

Happy Saturday.

The Movie and McCoy

December 30, 2022 at 8:57 am by Claudia

We watched Spoiler Alert  last night – one month to the day since the premiere. Don can’t stop talking about it. He really, really loves the movie and, of course, he’s my biggest fan. I have a little distance on it now and it is truly a beautiful, warm, heartbreaking and funny movie. Michael Showalter is the bee’s knees as a director. And Jim and Ben, my heavens, how wonderful they are in these roles. The thing I love about it – something Don and I have discussed a lot this morning – is that it’s a movie about life and love and heartbreak that has two central characters who just happen to be gay. It’s a healthy step forward, I think. And a necessary one.

I finally got to really see my scene. Believe me, I’m just a little blip on the screen, but the night of the premiere I was so surprised that some of my lines that I thought had been cut were back in the movie, that I didn’t really take in what I said or how I said it. So we rewound the scene a couple of times. I was an actress for many years but I was a stage actress. Film acting is very, very different. You have to pull it back, you can’t get away with the largeness of onstage acting. Don keeps going on about how real I am in the scene and how well I adapted to film acting in that scene. I listened to the director when he told me to be a bit quieter, for one thing. And I think that because I had been watching so many scenes being shot – watching Jim and Ben and Sally and Bill and their approach to the camera – that some of it rubbed off on me. Anyway – dare I say it without sounding egotistical? – I’m proud of the way it came out. It’s a pivotal moment in the film and it paves the way for the next few interactions. Of course, no one really likes the way they look onscreen, myself included, but that is beyond my control; heck, I was 69 when it was filmed.

Anyway, I will admit to a little thrill when I see it. And I will definitely admit to an even bigger thrill when I listen to Ben playing an American character. He really aced it and boy oh boy, was it a pleasure and honor to work with him.

Sigh of happiness.

I decided to pack the little putz houses away because I had been thinking of doing this. (I’ll take a distance shot soon.) We were moving the pew back to its usual home and I hesitated about placing the McCoy under it once again. So, now we’ve got this, which I’m still tweaking, but I like it. I especially like the way it cuts through the dark mahogany of the piano. Mahogany is not my favorite finish, but it was a big deal when my grandparents purchased this piano.

I finished the Herron, returned it to the library and picked up another book that had come in. We ran some errands. Don is making black-eyed peas for the new year and I found some coconut cream, so I’m going to try another batch of Linzer Tart cookies.

I’ve started Desert Star, the newest Michael Connelly. It’s like having a reunion with an old friend. He’s a wonderful writer.

Okay.

Stay safe.

Happy Friday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
