Day Three Hundred

January 7, 2021 at 9:11 am by Claudia

I remain shaken to my core after watching yesterday’s attempted coup.

Though I had not been watching television, I was checking Twitter to see if Jon Ossoff had been officially declared the winner of the Senate race, and I saw one of the first photos of the insurrectionists breaching the Capitol. I immediately ran to get Don, we turned on the television and there we remained until we went to bed.

Some thoughts:

Why was law enforcement so unprepared for this? We knew something was coming, we knew that Trump was ginning up his followers. He repeatedly talked about January 6th and how it was going to be ‘wild.’

Even more, I saw photos of Capitol Police taking selfies with members of that mob. I saw them let them in through a gate. I saw them stand there doing nothing as they walked through the Capitol without going through a screener. How did the insurrectionists know where offices were? How were they able to breach the Capitol so quickly and easily? Don and I couldn’t believe how easy it was for them to walk around, with huge flags that could be used as weapons, going from the Hall of Statuary to the floor of the Senate. What the hell?

I am not a conspiracy theorist, but it seems obvious to me that there was someone or several someones on the inside who helped them. There had to be.

To see them desecrate the Capitol, looting offices, trashing everything while taking selfies? They need to be arrested and thrown in jail. This cannot stand.

The seditious members of Congress need to be unseated. Josh Hawley and Ted Cruz need to be expelled. They are not worthy to hold any office, let alone one of such importance. There needs to be a clean sweep of Congress. And this should NEVER be tolerated again.

As for Trump, that vile, disgusting excuse for a human being – impeach him today and remove him from office. Or invoke the 25th Amendment. The fact that some of the decisions yesterday – to call in the National Guard, etc. – were made by Pence rather than Trump tells me that the administration knows he is out of his mind. If that’s the case, take him out via the 25th. He needs to be removed from office and thrown in jail.

He incited a group of people that he would never be seen with normally to commit crimes. He’s been doing this for five years, of course, and anyone who tells you they didn’t expect something of this nature was willfully ignoring the daily evidence of his sociopathy. We knew something was coming, that he wouldn’t leave office without creating as much chaos as possible. These misfits and malcontents, these believers in conspiracy theories who would rather live in a fantasy than in the real world were ripe for exploitation. And Trump knew it. As did every person in that administration and the resignations that are suddenly happening should have happened long ago. What? You’re suddenly shocked by his behavior? Give me a break. You worked for him. You enabled him. You didn’t take a stand until two weeks before he leaves office? All of them are beneath contempt.

That this could happen in this country says a great deal about where we are. Someone we heard recently on MSNBC said that we, as a nation, are no longer dealing with a shared set of facts. We have a large portion of the population that believes in a bunch of nonsense that can be debunked in approximately 30 seconds. And we have a monster in the White House.

He has been inciting violence since his early rallies, encouraging people to attack reporters. He made no secret of his propensity for violence or of his insatiable need to be a dictator. And now it’s come to this.

On a day when we should have been able to celebrate the incredible wins in Georgia, we witnessed a coup attempt. I confess that I knew it could get bad, but yesterday’s insurrection went further than I could have imagined.

Throw him in prison for the rest of his sorry life. Throw the insurrectionists in jail and put them on trial. Expel those elected representatives who tried to overthrow an election. They are vile. They are not public servants. We need to rid our governing bodies of these vermin and start fresh.

That’s how I feel this morning.

I’m not editing. I’m writing this in the moment on this day after an attempted coup.

I didn’t get to your comments yesterday. Sorry.

Stay safe.

Pray for our country.

Happy Thursday.

Day Two Hundred Ninety-Nine

January 6, 2021 at 10:09 am by Claudia

Georgia has done it.

I know that Ossoff’s win hasn’t been officially called yet, but it’s just a matter of time.

Oh my heavens!!

We stayed up too late, way too late, and we were up early this morning, so I fully expect some afternoon naps will be on the docket. But it was worth it.

I feel my shoulders dropping. Yes, I know the crapshow (I use a different word here in the house, but I’m trying to be somewhat circumspect here on the blog) will go on today. Don is going to watch it, but my feeling is that these soulless seditionists don’t merit any of my attention today. Or any day.

Better, so much better, days are ahead, my friends. And two weeks from today, Biden will be inaugurated.

Okay.

The miniature beds arrived yesterday and all I can say is: adorable.

This is the larger of the two – double bed size. They’re made out of brass and copper. They come from TinyIronMiniatures on Etsy – based in Montana.

Here is the other bed:

Closer to twin bed size. That’s why I ordered it. I’m thinking I can somehow get it in the tiny bedroom of the antique dollhouse in the den. Although the bed for the English dollhouse is bigger than I expected, but it just goes to show that the bedroom in that little cottage is just plain tiny! I’ll figure out placement. I need to get some sort of wardrobe and smallish chair and then it will all make sense. I also need to find some vintage white or cream hankies on Etsy because I used to have a lot of them and I think they all disappeared in one of my closet purges. The hankies will be the linens on the bed.

I’m really thrilled by the craftsmanship from Tiny Iron Miniatures.

By the way, I bought a turntable for the house on top of the china cabinet in the den and it has been a game changer. I can easily turn it around to work on the interior. That is a very heavy handmade house and the last time I tried to move it off the cabinet to work on it, I threw out my back.

I’m awfully tired today but I think I’ll spackle some of the cracks in the bathroom walls and get it prepped for wallpapering. I’m still waiting on that delivery.

Okay.

Celebrate!

And stay safe.

Happy Wednesday.

Day Two Hundred Ninety-Eight

January 5, 2021 at 10:16 am by Claudia

If I had any nails, I would be biting them. This is a big day. Since we won’t know anything until tonight or even later, I’ll be busying myself with chores around the house, including a little dollhouse work.

Speaking of chores: Doug gave us (several months ago) their wireless router set-up, which was relatively new, as he had upgraded. Doug is the tech guy in that house. At the time, I was overwhelmed with things to do, including losing the tree in the hurricane, texting for Biden, etc. I’ve had the box with the router and a couple of satellite pods upstairs on the chair in the office for a long, long time.

(Our router was over 9 years old and kept cutting in and out and should have been replaced a long time ago.)

Yesterday, I decided to set it up.

It was not as simple as I had thought it would be. After removing the old router and connecting the new, I kept getting a red light, which meant it was not connecting to the modem. I tried everything. Finally, I called our cable provider but I was on hold so long (“We are experiencing a high volume of calls…”) that I hung up. I texted Doug and his suggestion was to call Spectrum (cable.) So I called again and after a long wait was connected to a very helpful guy who made sure the modem was working – it was – and had me try a few things. He finally suggested that I call Linksys, the maker of the router. So I did. Endless time on hold, getting hungrier by the minute, and finally a guy came on the line who was enormously helpful. He helped me to set it up. Since it had been used by Rick and Doug, it had to be reset and registered online and he had to keep checking all sorts of things. Same thing with the little satellite, which is in the kitchen. This took a long time. All told, I spent about 4 hours getting everything to work. The gentleman at Linksys was incredibly calm and patient and serious, and – in true Claudia fashion – I made him laugh a couple of times. (Don and I always go for the laugh.)

Anyway, after it was over I was exhausted. But, it works! And the connection is so much better and now we can use our phones in the kitchen which has always been a dead zone. Thank you Doug and Rick. And thanks to helpful tech consultants at both our cable provider and Linksys.

I’m the tech person, for want of a better word, in this house. I put things together, I figure out how to set up the Smart TV and the remotes. I do all the computer and WiFi set ups. Don doesn’t do so well with that, though I suspect he could. He knows I’ll take care of it. On the other hand, he goes up on the roof, shovels the snow, nails down a tarp on the shed roof, etc. We balance each other. I have no complaints.

I have one thing to share with you, which was a wee splurge. I saw this on the Etsy site of Tiny Dollhouse NYC and I marked it as a favorite. I looked at it every day. It was one of a pair and one day I noticed that one had just sold, which left only one remaining, so when I got some ad income at the end of December, I went for it. It’s for the future Beacon Hill dollhouse.

This chair. It’s made by one of the foremost miniaturists in this country, if not the world, June Clinkscales. I admire her work so much. This is a heavy, solid chair (the heaviest miniature I own) and it is impeccably made. It has a curved back. The fabric is toile. I’ll take more photos when I can get more light – it’s awfully cloudy and gray around here – but isn’t it exquisite? It looks awfully good in this room, but it’s earmarked for the Beacon Hill. My first piece for that project.

This is a real collector’s item and I’m very proud to be its caretaker. Oh my heavens, I sigh with pleasure each time I look at it.

I got some baseboard trim in the mail yesterday, so I’ll start to add that to the bedroom and living room of the English Cottage. It involves mitering corners, which I’ve only done once before in Don’s studio. I also have two beds arriving today!

By the way, in case you didn’t see it, I did another IG video a few days ago on the Modern Dollhouse because I realized I’d neglected to mention it. You can see it on my Instagram account.

Don released another single today – this one is Guess I Still Get Crazy. On a personal note, this is one of my top four favorites that he’s written, so I’m thrilled. He’s been singing it for years but has never recorded it. This one is a collaboration between Don and our friend Rob Edwards. Rob has his own recording studio back in San Diego. (Rob’s the one who sold me our big oak coffee table and helped us find our Craftsman rental when we were living there.) Here’s the link.

Hang in there today.

Stay safe.

Happy Tuesday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
