Day Two Hundred Ninety

December 28, 2020 at 9:29 am by Claudia

I ordered two jigsaw puzzles for this winter. I’ve been eyeing the puzzles offered by John Derian. Since I can’t get to his shop in NYC, I ordered them online. I was going to order them from his site but the shipping was really pricey, so I caved and ordered through Amazon Prime.

Aren’t they gorgeous? Butterflies and a nineteenth century map of New York City. Derian’s work and aesthetic are exquisite. He’s on IG and I’ve spent hours looking at photos of his NYC apartment and his home on Long Island. I absolutely love the way he decorates. I’d like to be him when I grow up!

I digress. Winter is here, which means more time inside and I need something to do besides reading and working on dollhouses. So…puzzles are back. I’m not sure when I’m going to start one, but soon.

A reader of this blog – Janet – contacted me and asked whether I wanted a piece or two of the Petite Princess furniture she had when she was a child. I already had a couple of them, but I didn’t have the chaise. She generously sent it to me, along with a little birdcage and a plant.

Petite Princess furniture is 3/4 or 1:16 size, so it doesn’t fit in my 1:12 dollhouses, but it does fit in the folk art dollhouse. I’m thinking it will look neat on the upper floor.

Check out this mini snake plant! I just published photos of my parents’ snake plant in bloom and, as always, I got lots of responses from people saying they had no idea that snake plants bloomed. They do. And evidently the maker of this plant knew that because the white flowers are very much like the blooms on my plant. I love it.

Thank you, Janet! I’m honored that you shared these beauties with me.

Yesterday was about washing sheets, vacuuming, dusting, etc. I also cleaned and dusted Don’t mini studio. Because it’s so close to the window it collects a lot of dust. Now that we have new mini-blinds, I’m going to make sure that it isn’t in direct sunlight for too long. I already see a repair I have to do on the floor because the glue has lifted.

That’s about it. I’m still waiting for Don’s other present. Sigh. If it doesn’t come today, I’m going to reorder. (It shipped out of Los Angeles on December 11th and there have been zero updates since then.) His present for me that was also missing arrived on Saturday. He’s holding it until the other present arrives and then we’ll exchange gifts.

Stay safe.

Happy Monday.

Day Two Hundred Eighty-Nine

December 27, 2020 at 9:32 am by Claudia

The paperwhites in the den will be opening soon. The beauties in the kitchen are open and fragrant and lovely. I even got a whiff of their scent while sitting in my chair here in the den.

I love when I hear bird song on these wintry days. I heard some this morning so I turned around and looked out on the porch and there were two chickadees, one of which which was singing. He/she spent a short time on the porch railing and then took off in search of food.

It really makes my day.

Speaking of the porch railing, I looked out there the other day and there was a big, fat cat sitting and relaxing on the railing.

That’s a first.

I’m sure it’s one of my neighbor’s cats because I’ve seen him before.

I’ve been falling asleep early in the evening lately. The moment we sit down together on the sofa after dinner to watch television, I can’t keep my eyes open – even when the movie we’re going to watch is one of my favorites. Last night, we were debating what to watch and I pushed for Casablanca, which was on TCM. So we watched that and I swear I missed half of the movie!

Is it a letting go? Is it the cocooning of winter, which is like a hibernation of sorts? I’ve had this happen before and it’s usually in the winter. Maybe I’m finally relaxing? I don’t know.

We’re taking it easy today.

Stay safe.

Happy Sunday.

Day Two Hundred Eighty-Eight

December 26, 2020 at 9:52 am by Claudia

Last night’s sunset. After two days of heavy, heavy rain, we woke up on Christmas morning to green grass and no snow. The rain drove the snow away. I called it a “Reverse White Christmas” on Instagram. The temperature reached the high 50s on both Christmas Eve and Christmas day, but then, as winds came in yesterday afternoon, it plummeted. It’s now in the 20s.

I’m fine with it.

Christmas was lovely, quiet and joyous, just the way we wanted it. Other than spending some time at Rick and Doug’s for the past few years, our Christmases are usually just the two of us – our families are far flung – so it wasn’t really different than the usual. I made french toast in the morning since we are no longer having our usual coffee cake – it has way too much sugar. Then we opened presents. We had opted for a modest Christmas – only three presents each and nothing big. (We have yet to see two of our packages that are mysteriously missing.) I got something for the dollhouse and a book. Don got the new Paul McCartney album on vinyl and a planner. Since we had sent each other links for exactly what we wanted, nothing was a surprise. Surprises are harder the older you get, right? We don’t need all that much and we certainly don’t need something we’ll not use. I was pretty clear about my birthday presents as well, though Don did surprise me with that work table!

Don made an apple pie in the afternoon. Dinner (both of us were involved – yes, I cooked a lot yesterday!) was the best ever. We eat a Holiday Roast by Gardein and, frankly, it’s better than any turkey I ever ate in my non-vegetarian days. Along with that, Don roasted some vegetables, I made cloud biscuits, and finally – finally! – I made mashed potatoes that were exactly how I wanted them!  They came out exactly right. Huzzah!

We danced. We sang. We laughed a lot. A perfect Christmas. Mere sent a couple of packages for us – one from her and one from Little Z. We had a lovely FaceTime call with them later in the day.

Couldn’t have asked for anything more.

Today is sunny and very, very cold.

We’re going to lay low today, though I just sent Don to the post office to get some stamps. Don is going to work on some music and I suspect I’ll work on the English dollhouse and read.

I hope you had a lovely day yesterday, filled with peace and love. We’re heading to the end of the year, a year I will gladly kick to the curb, though I always qualify that by saying there has been much that is good in this year, as well.

Happy Saturday.

Stay safe.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
