The Piano

December 28, 2018 at 11:10 am by Claudia

A busy morning so far!

Don has been gently pushing me to get the piano tuned and to have whatever needs to be repaired attended to. I’ve known since the last time it was tuned that some repair was needed and it was just not a top priority. He took over and called a local guy who tunes and repairs pianos for a lot of professional pianists and this morning, he came to check it out.

All of what you see here has been removed and taken back to his shop. He found the same things in need of repair, as the previous tuner. The hammers need filing, the dampers need adjusting, screws need tightening – the keys had what was called a ‘shallow key dip’ because of that and the action will be much better when all is repaired. He’ll bring it back in about a week and put it all back together. Then he’ll tune it.

That serial number tells me that it was made by Chickering (an American company based in Boston)  somewhere between 1940 – 1943. Chickering was one of the finest piano makers in the country for decades and the pianos were incredibly well made. Abraham Lincoln had a Chickering. Adam (the piano tuner) told us that pianos of that era were so much better than any of the Asian import pianos made nowadays. The import pianos are cheaper, but the quality is lacking. I remember that the man who tuned our piano when I was young made an offer to buy the piano every time he tuned it.

So. I’m lucky. My grandmother bought this piano. Both she and my mother played it. Every time I went to my grandparents’ house, I played it (banged on it when I as little). Eventually, my grandmother had it moved to my parents’ house so I could take lessons. My brother and sisters played it. My uncle and aunt – who played beautifully, by ear – played it during family Christmas Eve celebrations. It’s priceless. So, even though it’s somewhat costly, it’s worth it. It needs some love. And I need to play it more. I’ve sat down to play once or twice lately but it was so badly out of tune that I couldn’t handle it.

Thanks for prodding me, Don.

Also this morning, some house moving:

I moved Don’s Studio (with his permission) out to the upstairs hallway where it sits on top of the linen cabinet. This real estate was previously occupied by the modern dollhouse, which has been moved to the bedroom.

Now I can actually see it and work on it!

I’m going to start sorting through things in the office today, a bit at a time. I have 4 big Trader Joe’s bags full of books that will be donated to the library. Right now, they’re in the car and they’ll stay there until we have a non-rainy day. Right now, it’s pouring out there and I don’t want them to get wet.

I’ve started the Louise Penny. I’m about 80 pages in. I’m going slowly so I can savor every word.

Happy Friday.

It’s That Time

December 27, 2018 at 10:07 am by Claudia

After an incredibly lethargic day yesterday, we are back to normal. The sun is out, it’s very cold, Don is going off to run some errands, and I am going to start – well, really continue – to purge. The other day, I sorted through a section of the bookshelves in our bedroom and I already have stacks of books to donate to the library. There’s more sorting to do.

Then I’ll start in on our office, which has become way too crowded. And tackle the ever problematic craft closet which really needs a purge. I need to be in a ruthless mood and I am.

It all started with the vintage dollhouse, dang it. I brought it in the house and the sheer amount of stuff we have (most of which I love and would never get rid of) overwhelmed me. Where do I put the dollhouse? There are two choices: on top of the china cabinet in the den, or next to the armoire in the living room. Currently, it’s next to the armoire but it needs a sturdier table if I’m going to keep it there. That led me to think about what I can get rid of.

Anyway, I’m running out of space on the den bookshelves and I want to transfer some of those books upstairs, so that I have room for more in the den. Make sense?

And, of course, we currently have no room on the kitchen table because that big old fern is there and  the table is truly the only place for it.

I’m holding off on taking down Christmas until January 1st, but I must admit, I have the urge to take it all down now – a first. I think it’s because I’m in a ‘cleaning mode.’

What else? We watched Smokey and the Bandit  last night in honor of Burt Reynolds and the experience confirmed why I never had any interest in watching it before. Pretty bad.

And I just finished a murder mystery by a well known author who has a series that takes place in Paris. It was fine, but I had just finished a James Lee Burke right before I started this one and it paled in comparison. That’s not entirely fair, of course, because Burke is such a superb writer that almost everything else seems a bit clunky. My reward? I’m starting Louise Penny’s latest later today.

I hope you’re enjoying your holidays.

Happy Thursday.

The Day After

December 26, 2018 at 11:10 am by Claudia

We are incapable of moving. Slugs. Sugared-out.

I said to Don as we returned home from Rick and Doug’s: “I can’t wait to get back to our routine.”

We find that the older we get, the more we cling to our routine – some might say, boring – days. We like them. There’s a comfort in them.

But we had a lovely Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Christmas coffee cake was devoured:

Stella did a bang-up job, as usual.

Presents were exchanged. Records were played.

Eventually, we arrived at Rick and Doug’s for a light repast. Our mutual friend Russ was there as well. Russ made vegetable soup that was delicious! Rick made popovers that were light as a feather. We brought pies – pumpkin and lemon meringue – that we ordered from a local restaurant. We had a lovely time. Then we came home and crashed from too much sugar and watched the Ellen Degeneres stand-up comedy special on Netflix and an episode of Monty Python.

I’m ready to cut out almost all sugar from my diet. It’s time. I go through these phases and I always feel better once I’ve done it. As of January 1st: bye, bye sugar.

Thought you’d like to see a picture of Sam. We love him.

I hope you had a lovely Christmas. Happy Boxing Day to those who celebrate it!

Happy Wednesday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
