Better

December 8, 2017 at 8:47 am by Claudia

Since the den has been my ‘home’ for the past several days, I’m looking at it with fresh eyes. It’s cozy and quirky. I really love it in here.

I’m feeling better. By mid-afternoon yesterday, I felt a change coming on and, though I’m still coughing, it’s nothing like it was. I’m not one to run to the doctor for meds when I’m dealing with something that just needs to take its course. I think there’s too much overmedicating going on as it is. Luckily, I didn’t need to be anywhere, wasn’t working on a show, and had the luxury of time. And Don, of course.

All iPhone photos because I’m too lazy to get up and get my big girl camera.

My new ringtone on my phone is the theme from Sherlock. It makes me happy. It also makes me not want to answer the phone because I want to listen to the whole thing! I just wanted something different from the same sounds I hear coming from every phone, everywhere. Don’s is Sweet Home Alabama.

But not the Alabama of Roy Moore, let’s be clear on that.

In honor of Benedict Cumberbatch, we watched Dr. Strange  last night on Netflix. It’s based on one of the Marvel superhero characters and it was a lot of fun; special effects driven, because that’s what fuels all those movies. Benedict was sporting an American dialect and I missed his deep and dulcet British tones. Hey, I’m an American and I coach dialects for a living so I appreciate our sounds, but I will admit to being a sucker for a British accent. Especially when uttered by Benedict Cumberbatch.

That dracaena that sits on the floor next to the dollhouse is about 14 or 15 years old. I bought it in a grocery store when we first moved out East. I moved it downstairs because I kept forgetting to water it. The pot is Bauer pottery from California. I bought it many years ago when I lived there.

The other Zz plant, which sits on the table next to the sofa.

Don says he’s going to take me for a drive today. Doctor Don’s orders.

Happy Friday.

Crappity

December 7, 2017 at 9:49 am by Claudia

Currently feeling like crap.

That’s really all there is say, my friends. Congested in head, in chest, coughing, and trying to clear all of this out of my system. It will pass. Been there, done that. When you have allergies, as I do, and are already mildly to very congested on a daily basis, a cold just piles more on.

Luckily, Don is here and I’m not having to manage everything on my own. We’ve been watching episodes of Curb Your Enthusiasm  at night, laughing like crazy, which often results in another coughing jag, but what the heck? Laughter is the best medicine.

Shots from around the house:

The sun came out yesterday (and it’s shining again today) which was very welcome after fog and rain for two days. I know I should be evolved enough that weather doesn’t affect my mood, but I freely admit I’m not. Sunny, please. And maybe some occasional fog.

I occasionally scan the ground where we found the individual pieces of this plate. I’m hoping that after the winter passes, the ground will heave up some more. Come on, Mother Nature, do your thing.

I only have four more Nancy Drews to collect and then I’ll have all the editions illustrated by Russell H. Tandy. I haven’t been looking for them lately, but yesterday I bid on one on eBay. We’ll see what happens. One of the missing editions, The Hidden Staircase, is very hard to find and is almost always in less-than-perfect condition. But I’m not a perfectionist and I figure if I find a pretty good copy, I’m fine with that. Should the gods send a perfect copy my way, so be it.

I’m reading the latest John Le Carré and it’s excellent. But it’s slow going – partly due to my feeling under the weather and partly because his pace is slower than most of the spy thrillers being written today. It’s actually a lovely change.

Happy Thursday.

Potpourri on Wednesday

December 6, 2017 at 9:09 am by Claudia

• Inspired by this book,

which is a wonderful series of “Portraits of the lives & homes of eccentric, eclectic & free-spirited bohemians,” I took some shots of the den this morning, not doing anything to brighten the photos, to make it look sunnier than it is. The den is always a bit moody, surrounded on two sides by our covered porch which keeps it in shadow much of the day. Since we take two steps down into the den, all of this works to make it a cozy, sunken retreat.

There are stacks of books on the coffee table, on the floor in front of the china cabinet, on the table to my left and on the bookshelves.

This is the room in our home that seems the most cozy-British-cottage in atmosphere and appearance. The sofa is old and slip-covered, there are books and reading lamps, there are piles of throws in a basket, an old wicker ottoman. There’s china and pottery, the dollhouse sits in a corner and then there’s the television, as well.

It’s always been a difficult space to capture in a photograph, for not only is it somewhat dark and moody, there are windows on three of the walls. Rather than getting frustrated, I’ve decided to embrace it and go for highlight and shadow. As is.

• I’m still under the weather and I’m getting restless. I don’t like sitting still for very long. Lots of nose blowing and coughing. I blame Don for this, though he says it’s been too long since he was sick to blame it on him. But I came down with it last Friday and that was less than a week since I had left Chicago.

It’s your fault, Don.

• Yesterday, we woke up to all four pilot lights out on Stella . We didn’t know if something was wrong with her, or with the connection to the propane, or if we’d run out.

We ended up being out of propane, which was rather shocking because we thought it would last longer than it did. But Stella is a big girl and Gino, our oil and propane guy, said that some of his clients who have bigger stoves that are hooked up to propane, like, for example, Vikings, go through a lot of it surprisingly quickly. So now we’ll make an adjustment in our propane delivery. Learning curve. We did have them check again to make sure there are no leaks and there are none.

• If you’ve been reading the blog lately and thinking: “Oh good! There are no more ads on the blog!” let me assure you, there are – now. I was in contact with BlogHer yesterday because of something else and I discovered that I had no ad income for the past two months…what?? And then, when I investigated further, I realized I couldn’t see any ads on my blog. Back story: I am usually on what is called the back end of the blog, writing posts, answering comments, etc., and I don’t always look at the front end – the page you see. And sometimes, during the course of the day, I have an ad blocker on for some sites I visit. Also, since we’re feeling less financially insecure lately, I haven’t been monitoring my monthly income on BlogHer. I’ve seen the monthly deposit go into my checking account and have been happy with the amount.

Anyway, it’s all been resolved. The ads are back. I’m going to be better at checking on things. BlogHer was great about it. There might be a day when I no longer have them, but for now, they help pay for the costs of maintaining this blog.

• Every day I discover something else that we wouldn’t be able to deduct on our income taxes with this horrific bill. Today it was Don’s union dues. Which begs the question, would I be able to deduct the expenses of maintaining my blog to balance out ad income? I wonder. I already know I won’t be able to deduct some expenses that go with being on the road. This will be very tough on us because we are freelancers.

Keep making your calls. I called (with a croaking voice) my Representative yesterday, and I emailed him twice. And I’ll keep bugging the crap out of him because this bill will be very hard on New Yorkers, who already pay a lot in property taxes and, of course, they want to keep that from being a deduction, as well. In other words, anything and everything that helps us get by, they want to take away.

Don’t get me started on what this vile man is doing to national treasures in Utah. They belong to us, by the way. So when I read words like this from Interior Secretary, Ryan Zinke – The land is being returned to the people! – I cry foul. It already is ours. What he wants to do is drill and frack and let corporations make money off of it and take away sacred sites that belong to us and that have deep and powerful meaning to Native Americans.

Please Mueller, do your thing, but do it quickly.

Happy Wednesday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
