Late afternoon still life.
I am still taken by surprise when I see that table and its patina. What a treasure we found!
This is the scene in the cottage this morning:
And they go all the way to the front door. It was to go below freezing last night and as I obsessively scan the Weather Channel app on my phone, I look ahead 15 days or so to see if it’s worth trying to save the plants. And it is.
At some point, I’ll give up. In fact, I forgot to cover the geraniums that live in the barrels last night. I could kick myself. They may be gone. I’m afraid to look.
But these beauties are still budding and blooming, so in true tag-team fashion, Don and I bring them inside around 6:00 and they’ll go back outside later this morning.
By the way, I straighten that little red lampshade about ten times a day. Oy.
Frost is covering everything this morning, but the sunlight is warming up the living room, slowly but surely. One of my favorite things in any house I’ve lived in, but especially in this many-windowed cottage, is watching the play of light on the walls and floors and furniture. I think that’s what keeps me sane in the winter. That bright winter sun.
For as long as I can remember, I’ve loved reading the Sunday New York Times. When I returned to my parents’ house to live for a couple of years after college, I would look forward to Sunday morning, when I could buy a copy of the Times and read it while sitting in my dad’s recliner. Since then, wherever I’ve lived, east coast or west coast, I’ve tried to keep that habit going. There have been times when I couldn’t get a copy or was just too busy to find the time to buy one. But lately, we’ve been grabbing a copy every Sunday.
Happiness is the Sunday New York Times crossword puzzle.
I read the latest edition of Louise Penny’s newsletter this morning. She wrote about Michael. I cried.
Those of you who are friends on Facebook have already seen this photo. I want to share it with all of you today because I love this t-shirt (it came in the mail yesterday) and we had such fun taking this picture:
Oh yes, we do.
Vote. Nasty woman or otherwise.
Happy Tuesday.
Vera says
HA! Great Tee shirt! And the play of light in your cottage is gorgeous.
Claudia says
Thanks, Vera!
Linda @ A La Carte says
LOVE the shirt! I’m going to try to vote this week. Today it’s flu shots for Mom and I and cooking dinner for the whole family here. Crowded but fun to see the Grands play with Annie. So much to do, gotta run!
Hugs!!
Claudia says
Have a great day with your family, Linda!
Carolyn Marie says
This nasty woman voted by absentee ballot about 3 weeks ago. Because I am an Election Judge I will be working at the poll all day on November 8.
Love your t shirt!
Someone is stealing Clinton lawn signs in my community and mine was stolen last night! I will replace it.
Claudia says
I’m not surprised! Some supporters have no class! What on earth good does it do to steal a sign? It will just be replaced.
I know it’s happening elsewhere, as well!
Laura C says
I would put out a sign saying, “Someone stole my Vote for Clinton sign. What does that say about Trump supporters?” or something similar. Are Trump signs stolen too? If so, I guess you just replace your sign.
Claudia says
I bet more Hillary signs are stolen than Trump signs. Totally unofficial presumption, of course.
Donnamae says
Love the light in your cottage! We have morning light in our kitchen and dining room…and it’s fun to watch it change with the seasons. I showed your pic to my hubby….he roared! Good show! ;)
Claudia says
Thanks, Donnamae! And tell your husband thanks, as well!
Wendy T says
You’re a dedicated gardener, Claudia. I didn’t know there would be a torrential, albeit short (about 30 minutes) rain in the wee hours of this morning. I’m rooting three very tiny cactus cuttings, and worried they’d be drowned or carried away. They are in tiny pots smaller than a tuna fish can. When I got up this morning, the skies were clear and the sun is now shiny very brightly. I went out to the patio and the cacti are ok. A bit soppy, but the solid should dry out well. Whew! 10-20% rain one day this week, and then again next week. Not having to turn on my irrigation system for the pass two weeks is wonderful. And I’ve saved enough gray water to handwater in a couple of days if we don’t get any rain. Hope your flowers last a bit longer!
Claudia says
Good for you! Glad you were able to save them!!
kathy says
lovely light in lovely rooms! i appreciate your photos/skills. i agree about the importance of sunlight, especially in winter! i am looking for a new place that has more light (i am in a rental right now that has mostly-north-facing windows and by the time I get home from work, the sun has risen past the few eastern-facing windows there). still, i am grateful for the space i have.
best wishes on the plants; may all your efforts pay off!
to avoid the after-work lines, i will vote before work next tuesday. and i will continue to pray. and remain grateful that i live in a land where i can (and do) vote.
kathy in iowa
Claudia says
Yes, light makes a difference. Hope you can find a place with just the right sources of light, Kathy.
I would definitely vote early! I think we will, too.
Diane says
LOVE the shirt and considered buying it for myself. I usually hold strong opinions so I guess that qualifies me to be a ‘nasty woman’ too. LOL
Claudia says
Yes it does! Hurrah for nasty women!
Vicki says
T-shirt is perfect! Only a week to go…
I think I’m ready for the ‘time change’ (Daylight Saving Time ends on Sunday) because I can’t take too many more of these dark-dark mornings.
I just recently resumed home delivery of my county’s paper-pulp newspaper; no more online stuff. I want to keep mags and newspapers alive in the world. They’re an endangered species. It’s definitely a smaller paper than what I got a few years ago but I enjoy more of my local news and especially the Sunday section. I often also buy the Sunday Los Angeles Times newspaper. I’m in the far burbs but my whole extended family over the many years are essentially Los Angelenos from early in the 20th century, like 1903, so picking up a copy of that paper feels familiar and good. A Sunday tradition when I was growing up; everybody would take a section and the house would get very quiet while we all read & read & read!
Haven’t I heard in my life somewhere that the NY Times crossword puzzle is really difficult?
Claudia says
It is, but it depends on the day of the week. The most difficult day is Friday, Vicki.
Vicki says
This doesn’t have anything to do with the post but I just read that Mr. Robot got picked up for a third season. Congrats, Don. It’s such a highly-acclaimed series. Season 2 is out on DVD in January.
Yep, I’m up at this ungodly hour. I’ve had a hard time winding down. Spent the ENTIRE afternoon with my elderly neighbor, helping to look, by car, for her Bichon; he’s a dear little dog and tonight is darn cold after our wee rain. We eventually found him (she’d left a yard gate open; he runs like the wind) but I was getting frantic because he is so sheltered/pampered and not worldwise/streetwise and we’re not too far off of a very busy boulevard; if he’d been out all night, well, 10,000 things could have happened to him. I wound up being gone from home for nearly 8 hrs. I hope I can have a quieter day today (Weds.).
Claudia says
Oh, I’ll let Don know that, because I don’t think he knows. Now, if they use Don again – that’s another story.
So good of you to help your neighbor. I would have done the same thing. Thank goodness you found her little dog!
Monica says
Love the cow by the red lamp shade that will never stay put. I have one of those, it’s just not red.
You are one dedicated gardener and the results show.
Well, this nasty woman proudly voted yesterday. I didn’t see one orange person there.:0~
Now, I have to get me a shirt!
Have a great day,
Monica
Claudia says
Yes, go get a shirt, Monica!
Laura C says
Love your shirt! A few weeks ago I posted a Facebook post: “Je suis wicked.” ;)
Claudia says
Love that, Laura!
Shanna says
Love the shirt! Didn’t get to read your blog as early, this morning—I was out, voting early! And I’m very glad that’s over. I admire your prowess with that camera. You do find the loveliest light to snap!
Claudia says
Lucky you! I wish I could vote right now! But on the other hand, there is the excitement of going to the polls on that day.
Chris K in Wisconsin says
Nasty women, unite!! As you know, we did vote early, and it makes me very happy to know that so many people are doing so as well ~ in the states where they are able. My daughter was a History & Political Science major as an undergrad. She is in London this week and said it is so very interesting (and a bit embarrassing) hearing about our politics “on that side of the pond.”
I have been taking pictures of one of our maple trees as it turns to a bright golden color. It is so big and so golden that it actually reflects light differently for these few days. I am not looking forward to changing the clocks this weekend because it gets dark so early. It is to be 68* today. And 68* on a November day is certainly a diamond of a day!! I hope you enjoy your Tuesday!!
Claudia says
I can’t even imagine what they think of us over there. They must think we’ve lost our minds.
Vanessa says
So, if you wear the shirt when you go to the polls to vote, are you going to be turned away?
In Kansas City, the TV news stations are advising individuals not to wear clothing with political statements, candidate names or anything even hinting at political because they will be turned away for violation of campaign rules at a voting site.
I’ll be glad when this circus is over.
Barbara W. says
Unbelievable. My daughter braids orange ribbons in support of our party into her hair when we go to vote. The current election in America is just bewildering to us.
Claudia says
It is more than bewildering to us, Barbara. Actually, what Vanessa said has always been the law, or for at least a very long time. No buttons, no t-shirts, no signs. You are supposed to go in to vote without any of that because within in a certain amount of feet from the polls, there is no electioneering. I think that’s a good thing.
Claudia says
No, I wouldn’t wear it. That’s always been the case, Vanessa. No electioneering within a certain amount of feet of the polls. You can’t wear buttons or t-shirts or any of that. That’s not new. It’s the law.
Trudy Mintun says
The light in the cottage is wonderful. It it delightful to watch as light changes in the house. I have west windows. Along the top I have crystal prisms hanging. The colors dance! My idea is not original it came from “Polyanna”.
My mother loved the NYT also. She mostly liked the crossword puzzle. She would read the paper, and then do the puzzle. In a few hours. In INK!
I love your shirt. We are/can be nasty. And, I am rather proud of it. I will be voting next week.
Claudia says
I love the prisms in Pollyanna! I do my crosswords in ink as well.
Mary says
I vote for the women who ” could not vote” prior to 1920. These women fought for the vote I cannot be complacent about my right to vote. Even when some say ” you vote for someone I vote for the other person ” it is a wash”. If do not vote, I cannot later complain, this is the rule. I vote!
Claudia says
You said it perfectly. To not vote is to take for granted the rights we have, especially women’s rights. All those women who fought for us to have the right to vote deserve respect and we show that respect by voting!
jan says
In our state we have mail in voting. So you can wear whatever you want while voting. If I had a nasty woman tee, I certainly would have worn it. I am beginning to be so fed up with this election that I may buy a few nasty woman tee shirts and wear them for the next four years. I would love to see a landslide.
Claudia says
I’m going to wear mine every day for the next week!
Nancy Blue Moon says
Just call me NASTY! lol
Claudia says
Looks like there are many of us!
Dawn says
No frost at our place yet, but I did pull the annuals up to make room for adding winter things. It’s actually 75 here today. One day I’m wearing a scarf and the next flip-flops. Yep, you can tell I’m in Michigan. Call me when you have a free moment we need to catch up :)
Claudia says
I know. I will, as soon as I can. We have three frosts already, Dawn!
Debbie says
This nasty woman always votes! And, my youngest niece, an 18 year old nasty woman, will vote for the first time in this election. Tim Kaine spoke at her university today and she was there!!!!
Claudia says
Oh, how exciting! I envy her! Hillary and Tim don’t really do any campaigning here because NY is a blue state and Hillary was our Senator.
Olivia says
We have early mail voting in my state. I voted two weeks ago.
I understand trying to save your plants. I would be afraid that spiders or bugs might be on the plants. I’m a bit of a chicken when it comes to either one. My husband on the other hand will catch any spiders that wander in and put them outside.
Claudia says
Oh, we’re fine about spiders and bugs. Though we did find a bee this morning! We got him safely outside again. See? Your husband is just like me!
Lily says
I absolutely love that tee shirt! Yes, we nasty women do vote! :-)
Your cottage is so lovely with the sunlight. I love the wall with all the photos of your dogs. Everything in your home is really beautiful. Such a warm, cozy, bright and happy place. I feel like I have a nice visit with friends, you and Don, everyday when I read your blog.
Claudia says
That’s exactly how I want you to feel, Lily. So your comment makes me very happy!
sandy says
I love the tee. D.T. is in my city tonight so I am avoiding all local programming. I just cannot hear his name or see his face anymore.
Claudia says
I don’t blame you, Sandy! I mute the television when he’s on the screen. And then I look away.
edis castilho says
I follow your blog will more than three years, I admire you.
Claudia says
Thank you so much, Edis. I’m so glad you like it here!
Judy Shaw says
Great shirt! Keep on keeping on!
Claudia says
Thanks, Judy!
Sue says
WE only get “nasty” when we’re around men like Trump.
Claudia says
Yep!
