Do YOU have your very own pair of slippers from the Golden Nugget?
I thought not.
I know you’re envious. That’s the kind of thing that happens in the very glamorous jet set life of a voice and text coach.
Actually, Don is jealous. There was another pair in the closet. I should have brought them home for him. (I did check with the hotel before I packed them, just to make sure it was okay.)
I’m sick about my morning glories. The pesky deer have chewed up all the leaves on the plants that are in the chicken wire fence garden. All of them. They also ate my moonflower vines – which were small and slow growing, but they had finally started to move up to the trellis. I’ve been growing morning glories for years and this is the first time any animal has eaten them. With deer, it’s a seasonal thing. Every once in a while you get a deer that is extra brave and comes rather close to the house. We’ve got one of those guys this season. Conversely, they haven’t eaten one bit of the hostas, which are usually their favorite plants to dine on.
I do have one more morning glory plant that lives on the fence right next to the side/kitchen door. I’m hoping that it is a bit too close to the house for them. And we’re trying to be very vigilant in the early morning and at dusk. We keep getting up and going to the side door to keep watch. And that’s all we can do. It’s just so hard when you’ve been nurturing seeds planted in the first week of May – all this time – only to see them destroyed.
I bought this yesterday. Even though I have to get it on publishing day, I usually don’t read it right away. It will be a year until another one comes out, so I delay my gratification.
Works for me.
Besides, I have plenty of books around here to read. Too many.
Another gorgeous day around here. It’s been so lovely lately. Cool mornings, autumn light, but nicely warm days.
Happy Wednesday.
Verna says
Good morning Claudia! Those deer do know where to dine. We have no deer so our sunflowers are 8 ft tall. However, the bumblebees dive bomb us if we get too close. We have never had so many. Very cool. Do you still see your lovely garden spider?
Your book choices were incredible. What a wonderful bookstore you found. The covers you so thoughtfully shared were beautiful.
Have a lovely day!
Claudia says
No, the spider packed up and moved on last week. I miss him!
Thank you, Verna!

Love the slippers…you must feel so pampered! I enjoy looking forward to some things, too. Louise Penny is one of them.
We had early on trouble with deer eating my hydrangeas. After I sprayed with homemade organic deer repellent, I now have big glorious blooms. Sorry to hear about your plight with your plants …I know how frustrating that can be.
My hubby had opened all the windows this morning….but, with a stiff breeze, it got very chilly this morning very quickly. Crazy weather, cool today, 80 tomorrow, then 68 by Saturday. I guess fall is coming whether we like it or not. Enjoy your day!
Claudia says
The problem is that it happened while I was away. No time to spray nor would I have though to spray since they’ve never been chomped on before. Ah, well.
I also have a homemade repellent that I make, I’ll spray it on the remaining MG tomorrow. It’s going to rain tonight.
Donnamae says
Yeah….I forgot that small detail of you being away. Well…at least you can be prepared for next year. The only trouble with the homemade spray, is that it washes off with rain. So I just have to be vigilant. ;)
Claudia says
That’s why I can’t spray until tomorrow. It’s raining at the moment.

No slippers, but Tillman Fertitta, owner of the Golden Nugget is from Galveston. In the aftermath of 2008’s devastating Hurricane Ike, he offered free stays there for anyone who wanted to get away from the island for a short reprieve from the recovery efforts. I’m looking forward to the new Penny, but will wait awhile.
Claudia says
He had constant commercials on the television (the hotel channel) for some sort of ‘take my course’ on building a business. Mildly irritating. But good for him for offering shelter after the hurricane. That’s wonderful.
Margaret says
He has a cable tv show on entrepreneurship, mentoring small business owners who are interested in selling their product to his restaurants, casinos and hotels. My kitchen reno contractor’s firm did a lot of work for Tilman’s newest high end -very high end-Houston hotel, and was offered more but decided life was too short.
Claudia says
He sounds like a good guy.

I still have 2016-17-and -18 to get through before moving on to the 2019 Louise Penny. Thanks for the recommendation! I’ve been happily ensconced in Chief-Inspector-Gamache-ville for most of this year. Reading them in order is a must, though. I read a couple out of turn and have kinda regretted knowing some developments in advance.
Claudia says
I’ve always said they need to read in order. The character development over time is too important.
Trudy Mintun says
The deer have come within 3 feet of my house to eat the plants I have in a barrel. The flowers have returned time after time only to be eaten again. This year I also noticed that most of my day lilies didn’t bloom. You got it! The deer. It’s Ok.
They are predicting a particularly harsh winter for us, and the deer will need this more than I need the prettiness. I think they can have the black berries too. Anything to help them put on some fat before the snows fly.
I will worry about the little fawn all winter if it separates from mommy. It is already showing signs of independence.
As far as the Inspector goes I am back on book 6. It will be a while for me. I will enjoy the anticipation though.
Enjoy the early fall!
Claudia says
Yes, you’re right of course. If it helps them get through the winter, okay. But we have tons of trees and bushes and wild plants in our woods and the neighbor’s woods (right behind our shed.) There’s no lack of stuff to eat.
Linda from Boston says
I’m a third of the way thru A Better Man. It’s a goodie.
Claudia says
I’m sure it is. Too good to read right away. That’s a pleasure I will put off for a while.
jeanie says
Oh, isn’t it torture when there’s an author you love and you read the most recent of a series and then wait. And wait. And wait. I think I need to give a quick re-read to the last half or so of her last one, just to remind me where we left off. I know I could probably find a synopsis (and I do remember the very end) but I love them so, it’s more treat and requirement!
I adore the deer but a year ago when they chomped off every tulip bloom I had, I was none too happy!
Claudia says
That’s a good idea. I might just read that last chapter to refresh my memory. Thanks, Jeanie.
Vicki says
Well, we’ve been basically emptying our house for home appraisal and a finish to the home improvements and we are SO over the multiple, daily trips to the offsite storage facility, lugging umpteen boxes in 90-degree heat with humidity. Every summer I say the same thing, that I never remember such a humid SoCalif summer.
I’m so sorry about your morning glories!
Claudia says
And when we lived in San Diego, it was rarely humid. Maybe a week or two in the summer, but that was it!
Vicki says
Yes, but of course climate change is just a hoax (hear my dripping sarcasm).
Claudia says
xo
Susan says
So sorry about your morning glory. David and I began our married life together in a little farmhouse in Virginia hunt country. We had a herd of deer surrounding our little house each evening. It was hard to control them because there were 126 acres of open fields surrounding the house. At night when we let out our little Yorkie for the last time, I would step onto the front porch and hear the breathing of many deer. No fear of me at all! I planted 100 tulips just randomly all over the front yard. Not one of them came up. The deer ate them all. Oh well, that’s life in the country.

Claudia says
It is indeed. But that doesn’t make it any less frustrating at times! This too, shall pass.
Barbara W. says
The last time we went to Florida, my daughter acquired a monogrammed robe and slipper bag from The Don Cesar. Alas, no slippers. I am experiencing much slipper envy right now.
Glad you were able to obtain the latest Penny release. I too sometimes will buy the latest offering from a favourite author and put it away for later consumption. Is “comfort reading” a thing?
Claudia says
It is indeed! And she is definitely comfort reading.
Marilyn says
We have the same problem with the squirrels. They dig up all the bulbs and chew them to pieces. It is so frustrating. Love those slippers. They look comfortable. Enjoy your book.
Marilyn
Claudia says
Very frustrating! Those pesky little critters!
kathy in iowa says
no such slippers here, but i hope you enjoy them. they look comfy.
i collect water from places i go, put it in little white-lidded glass spice jars from world market, label it with the source/location and smile when i see it all. and work to go somewhere else with moving water.
since you do not have a great fondness for the city in which you got them, maybe the monogram on your slippers can be for “good night” …? hope that’s what you have.

Claudia says
I don’t mind thinking of them as Golden Nugget slippers – it’s sort of tacky and fun at the same time!
Brenda says
Read the book
She is one of my favorites and have enjoyed all of her books
I do not like the language but that is just me!!!!
This story is great and she certainly knows her topics-characterization intriguing…surprises galore…plot exceptional…her craft is the best. Some of her prose is memorable.
Claudia says
Since I have a salty tongue, the language doesn’t bother me at all! Thanks for the positive review, Brenda. She is an extraordinary writer. Right now, I’m reading The Girl Who Lived Twice, the newest (and last) in the Lizbeth Salander series.
Brenda says
You are so welcome
Love love your blog so much
Claudia says
Thank you, Brenda!
Linda Mackean says
The slippers made me smile. The deer here are very brave and come right up to the window at times. Right now I’m watching a squirrel at my bird feeder. A few more bites and I’ll chase him off. It’s a lovely Saturday and after a brief visit to friends I’m glad to be home.
Claudia says
Our deer this year seem to be very brave, also!
Take care, Linda.
