Random on Saturday

June 11, 2011 at 10:23 am by Claudia

This may be my first Saturday Random post. It would take a bit of research on my part to confirm this. That won’t be happening.

:: Blithe Spirit seems to have drawn the unlucky straw weather-wise. Every run of the show on the outdoor stage has been cursed by bad weather. I’ve sat through gale force winds, 100 degree heat, mosquito attacks, gnats everywhere, thunderstorms and last night? A constant drizzle-rain in the cold that crept into every pore of my body, leaving me in a shivering, miserable puddle. Can we get a break?

Picture me trying to write notes on a legal pad during all of this. I’d write a note, then shove the pad up under my sweatshirt. Then I’d take the pad out to write another note. At one point I tried to hold an umbrella and write notes at the same time. By the end of the evening, all I could think of was the heater in my car and a long hot shower. Imagine how hard it was for the actors. During one scene, the lead actress got up from the sofa and had a huge water mark on her backside. I have to say, the audiences here are up for the challenge. Slickers appeared, rain hats were put on as they kept on watching the show and reacting with laughter and applause.

I had to spread my notes out to dry overnight. Don’t even try to read them. I write these in the dark, you know. And that is why I have to re-write them the next morning.

:: In an effort to comfort myself, this morning I did something I rarely do. I ate a bunch of cereal right out of the box. I’ve reverted to my childhood-self. Except this childhood-self also drinks coffee.

:: I’m currently reading 4 books at the same time. This is not unusual for me. I started Cloud Atlas right before I got sick a week ago. It is the kind of book that requires a bit of work from my brain, so I abandoned it for a short while as I turned to page-turner mysteries – the only kind of book I can read when I’m feeling miserable. The book by Lisa Jackson is one such mystery that I grabbed off the communal shelf at the theater. Scout, Atticus and Boo is a collection of thoughts by various writers on To Kill a Mockingbird. I got it for half the original price when I was shopping at The Brattle Bookshop in Boston. A wonderful book. And From the Ground Up is a book by Amy Stewart about the creation of her first garden. If I have to be away from my garden for a prolonged period, then I find I must read about gardening.

:: My roommate’s wife and baby daughter arrived yesterday and they are now staying in a house as part of a 8 day house swap. They are based in NYC. The local homeowner travels to Manhattan to stay in their apartment and they get to stay in a fabulous house with an incredible vegetable garden. So I am on my own again.

:: Let’s close with some pretty flowers:

Alstromeria again, this time in an orangey-peachy color. They have to last until I leave – which is in 9 days, by the way.

    Claudia,

You will be home soon my friend. I have enjoyed your posts and hopefully some of the comments you get help to pass the time.

We are getting settled. The internet is a trial but once I can connect it works fine.

    Hang in there!

Such an enjoyable posting today. I have found two of the four books looking good for my list. Nothing like TKTMB and Boo story to peek my interest. And don’t get me started on one about gardening. The cover alone is right up my alley.

I’ll be counting the day till your return.

Oh my goodness, Claudia! I’ve just been catching up with your week. Your Wisconsin weather experience has been crazy! I hope that it calms down soon.

Okay, that bookstore looks like a little bit of heaven to me. I love bookstores like that. I have a favorite independent bookstore up in Sonora (CA) where my parents live. I could spend hours there.

By the way, I read that book by Amy Stewart a few years back. I love that it’s set in Santa Cruz. I’ve been there so many times that I could totally picture her home and garden. I thought it was a nice read.

I’m off to a garden/landscaping class at a local garden store today. I’m hoping to come home inspired to get serious about doing something in that little dirt lot that I call my front yard.

Okay, I just blabbered about myself just now. Please take care, and try to get back to that bookstore soon!

    Hugs,
    Jill

How fabulous that you only have 9 days left! Yay!
So sorry about the tough weather. The actors must be getting quite tired of it by now.
The book by Amy Stewart sounds really interesting. I will look it up.
    Hugs,
    Terri

Hi sweet sister, I am gardening all day, or should I say weeding in 88 degrees with 80% humidity. The weather stinks here in Florida. Love you,
    Mere

Claudia, last night sounds like an evil plot by the weather to annoy you personally.

I have been known to try to write things down in the dark, but I can never read what I wrote the next morning and all is lost.

It won’t be long now until you can see your own garden. I’ll bet you are counting hours, minutes and seconds by now. How are the robin babies doing?

The alstromeria is so pretty!! My mom grows a huge bunch of that all along one side of her house. The weather and bug situation sounds pretty awful for outdoor theater. I hope things improve quickly!! Only 9 days!!! :-)

Mother Nature having her way with you! We are getting a thunderstorm right now and it is soooo needed and wanted, of course we are not putting on an outdoor play either. Just gotta roll with it, Claudia… perhaps a beanie hat with an umbrella top? Or do you have a wide brimmed hat?

Nine days. Woo-hoo for you! I eat that very same cereal every single morning. Never vary. I have blueberries and sliced strawberries on top. THEN my coffee!

Claudia, good for that audience. That would have been taxing for me in that weather though. I also read several books at once. I bought two vintage gardening books today and will read them and my fiction book too. Nine days yes! hugs♥O

    Hi Claudia,
Being out in the elements for a long time really takes the energy right out of you! No wonder you were drawn to something comforting….like cereal out of the box eaten like you sometimes did as a child. Everyone who is involved in the performance deserves a huge standing ovation each night…what dedication they have! Hope you have some better weather! Enjoy your evening and your books. I am looking foward to receiving the book I won! Thank you again! Sending warm, dry weather thoughts your way…. xoxo Kim

It was cold and rainy here too. Those poor actors! and you! I have to say your “in the dark writing” is a whole lot better then my “in the light writing”. Hope the sun comes out soon! Blessings, Joanne

To me, it seems like you just left home. I guess I have fallen down the rabbit hole. Nine days will hopefully pass quickly and you’ll be back in your garden again. I also read more than one book at once. When people don’t understand, I ask them if they watch more than one tv show a week. Isn’t that the same? I don’t ever like to completely give up on a book so it might take me a year to read it but I usually do finish. I’ll have to write down those books. I don’t think I’ve read any of them.

Oh how I do wish you some very good weather for the play. Thankfully there is an audience. I am not certain I would brave such conditions. Happy reading and the days are counting down til you are in your own home. Good weather…good weather…good weather…

I’m just hoping you don’t get sick from that wet, chilly weather – sitting out in it can’t be much fun, acting in it must be even worse!! Hope these 9 remaining days improve – meanwhile hang in there with your healthy cereal and whatever else it takes Claudia.

Sending warm wishes from this scorching place – mid-90’s again today but at last some clouds so perhaps a shower tonight! That will feel sooooo good!

Alstromeria is a wonderfully lasting cut flower. Those are sure a pretty color.

I think the weather is testing lots of folks already this, “almost” summer. Hopefully we’ll all see some brighter, happier days ahead.

    Take care Claudia.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
