Reading, Watching, and Art

January 23, 2020 at 10:33 am by Claudia

I keep thinking it’s Friday and it’s Thursday. I’ve been like that all week. I’m also going through one of my bouts with too little sleep. I’m just trying to maintain some calm about the whole thing. I don’t have to be anywhere, I don’t have to travel to Hartford or NYC, I can fall asleep in my chair in the late afternoon (like I’ve done for the past two days.) It’s all good.

Finished The Night Watch  by Michael Connelly. Excellent, as always. And I do mean ‘as always.’ He’s one of my favorite writers. Now, on to The Night Circus  by Erin Morgenstern. Hmmm. ‘Night’ seems to be the theme in this post so far; 3 nights with too little sleep, and two books with night in the title. What is the universe trying to say to me?

We’ve also been watching Hinterland  on Netflix. It’s an excellent police/detective procedural which takes place in Wales. It’s been around for 3 seasons, so I’m sure we’re late to this party and that some of you have already seen it.

More den artwork:

A very old lithograph by Currier & Ives – a famous one at that. I don’t know how old this particular print is, but I’d hazard a guess that it’s one of the earliest printing runs. The paper is foxed, there’s quite a bit of damage near the top. I got it at an auction several years ago. I had no idea that it was this old until I looked at it more closely after having won it for $25.00. I bid on it because I love the sentiment and I absolutely love the colors, especially that vivid red. It hangs above our television set.

And this one, which you’ve seen before in my McCoy photos. Both of these shots had to be taken from strange angles because the den has windows on 3 sides, making it virtually impossible to get a shot of anything glass without a reflection appearing in it.

This is a watercolor of a winding road with a windmill in the distance. It’s signed, but I can’t quite make it out. We bought this when we were living in San Diego. We loved the watercolor, but we really loved the frame! Isn’t it gorgeous? It really makes a statement and looked great in our Craftsman house in SD with all its dark woodwork. I hung it above the sheet music cabinet here in the den because it seems to go with the dark mahogany of the cabinet. The minute I added the McCoy, the whole thing popped.

I didn’t reply to comments on yesterday’s post as I have to count them for the giveaway and adding mine in only makes it more difficult.

Some errands to run today. It’s going to be warmer, thank goodness!

Happy Thursday.

The winding road picture is wonderful paired with your McCoy. They compliment each other very well…almost as if they are talking. But, that frame speaks for itself.

We are off to run errands, and stop at my new favorite thrift store. They only sell furniture and home decor, including pictures. Not that I have any room….but it’s always fun to look. Other than that, it’ll be shoveling for us. Nuisance snow…an inch at a time. Worst kind I think. I would much rather get the 4 inches at one time, than this sporadic variety.

Enjoy your reading…and maybe a quick afternoon nap! ;)

I don’t blame you! A bit of shoveling here, a bit of shoveling there.

Have fun at the thrift store, Donna!

It’s lightly snowing here right now…and will be all the way through Saturday night. Looks pretty out the windows as it’s lightly snowing, but as you know, it’s a pain in the tush because of having to shovel and then driving in it.

I am finishing up Ann Patchett’s, The Dutch House, which is quite good.

We’ve been watching the series, Salt, Fat, Acid, Heat on Netflix and even though Brian isn’t a foodie like me, he’s loving this series. The history of foods and cooking and the science behind it is fascinating. And we love Samin Nosrat. She has such an entertaining, vibrant, yet down-to-earth personality. I would love to cook with her in her gorgeous Berkeley kitchen!

Last night we watched some Monty Python. We love British comedy!

I’ve heard very good things about that book.

We’ve seen all of Monty Python several times and we watched some it again recently. RIP Terry Jones.

      Thanks, Melanie.

We’re always saying that – we wish there were more good series (and that, for us, eliminates most of the series on commercial tv!)
      Thanks, Priscilla.

i agree … you are getting a message! hope you can sleep better/more.

love the colors and lines of the print and pottery mixing, matching and showing each other off so well! and yes, that frame is a beauty.

especially love your litho and its message. i have a very old, greatly-detailed litho of the ten commandments around the Lord’s prayer. bought it more than thirty years ago when living in minneapolis and it is now in a place where i see it when i leave and return home … love it.

foggy and misty here this morning (which was beautiful when i was out at 6:45 this morning, but – yes – dangerous) and the roads are still a mess, in part because it’s just above freezing here. glad your weather is warmer.

good luck with the errands, then may the rest of your day be filled with fun and relaxation.

ps: i didn’t comment yesterday because i think that “overstory” book sounds like it requires more focus than i could give it right now … but i still thank you and barbara for the chance to win it!

Thank you, Kathy. It’s warmer here today and will be even more so tomorrow. I have a framed piece that was my grandmother’s that I’ll share with you soon. Reminds me of your Ten Commandments.

I love Hinterland. Hope there is a Season.4. I am struggling with sleep right now too. I seem to go through phases of good and bad sleep. Hope the good sleep comes back quickly for both of us. xo Laura

Yes, beautiful McCoy color bringing out the color in the watercolor. Fond memories of a brief Craftsman rental in San Diego (North Park). Ahh, Life! Fog and mist again today in my neighborhood.
Note about The Dutch House – happened to sample the audiobook through Amazon last week – Tom Hanks!

Spent most of my time living in Hillcrest, which I loved also.

A bit of shaming for me today! Although I live in Wales now I haven’t watched “Hinterland” even though I am trying to learn Welsh (hard language!) and friends said it would help. You have tipped the balance for me and I will get husband to work Netflix for me and give it a go,thanks.I am not a telly watcher usually, prefer reading and yes I have just got Michael Connelly’s latest but saving it for Sunday reading. Lovely and warm and sunny here today in Llandudno- in January! Spooky but nice. Thank you for all your good reading advice.

I’ll have to check out Hinterland. Thanks for the recommendation.

I love both of these pieces. They both speak to me — the Currier and Ives for its warmth and home and the watercolor because it is simply exquisite.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
