Scenes from the porch.

We’re due for quite a bit of rain today and tomorrow and then, hopefully, it will be dry for several days.

Happy first day of fall! I am so ready for it. To state the obvious, summer was quite disappointing this year. Now the temperatures are more moderate, downright cool in the morning, and I feel like I’ve come out of a stupor (the word Don used when we were talking about it the other day.)

Two more books were picked up from the library yesterday; Mick Herron’s newest – The Secret Hours, and Lisa Jewell’s newest – None of This is True. The latter is in the large print edition, which I ordered by mistake. When I saw I would be number 157 in the queue for the regular print edition, I stuck with the large print. And I’m currently well into The Girl in the Eagle’s Talons  by Karin Smirnoff, who is taking over the series that was originally written by the late Stieg Larsson. It’s very well written – I’m still sorting out the characters.

Don made a sweet potato pie the other day and it was a definite hit! I really love it. Sugar-free, of course. As is the case with our apple pie, it gets even better after it’s been refrigerated.

The Boston fern is doing very well this year. I have had this fern since Don was out in La Jolla doing the first production of Margaritaville, so that would be six years. It goes outside in the summer and then overwinters upstairs in our office. There have been times during the winter months where I thought it might be a goner, but it has always come back. I’m sure it loved the rain and humidity that was this summer.

Anyway, it’s looking good,

Okay. I’ve run out of things to say and I need another cup of coffee.

Stay safe.

Happy Saturday.

Happy first full day of Fall! We’re having cooler weather, but the Bay Area has been under Spare the Air alerts due to smoke from the fires in northern California and Oregon. Breezes should be improving the air quality by tomorrow. Your Boston Fern looks very lush… it’s well taken care of! Don’s sweet potato pie sounds like a really nice treat! Enjoy your reading.

    happy first day of fall!

glad you have cooler temperatures … they just make things easier, don’t they?

your love for plants and gardening shows … the fern and flowering plant are thriving and beautiful! and i very much like the bright happy turquoise on that chair. :) your patio looks like a very nice place to sit and read a new book. :)

before winter gets here, i am making another go-through of everything in my little place. i find it easier to do that by category (shoes, yarn, etc.) and easiest stuff first (starting with something simple like socks … not a lot of emotions there, haha). going to do a bit now, then go be with members of my family. will make some chili to go with our cooler weather and a football game (on tv) tonight. pie sounds good, too!

happy, safe saturday and every day to everyone!

Claudia, what sweetener, if any, does Don use in his pies?

In the apple pie he uses frozen apple juice concentrate, which is sugar-free. He used maple syrup and nutmeg in the sweet potato pie.

      Stay safe, Wendy.

Sweet potato pie sounds yummy and perfect for fall.
We are having beautiful fall weather but it looks like very little color change of leaves yet.
    Happy fall!

We’re the same. For the most part, the leaves haven’t changed color yet.

      Stay safe, Marilyn.

Happy fall! It’s been cool-ish but humid. I got a Boston fern this spring for the first time in years and it did wonderfully on our front porch. I had to bring it in a week ago when nighttime temps hit the low forties. Thanks for the upstairs idea. I think it’ll go and winter in my craft room now.

Celebrated his 65th birthday yesterday with a husband almost traumatized at the idea of being that old. Since I’m a good bit older, I wasn’t exactly sympathetic and couldn’t understand why he’s been obsessing about it all this month. The only thing bothering me since I passed 70 is it is absolutely true that time really does fly and I need to make the most of being in the present for him and everyone I love each and every day.

    Take care,
    Kay

      hej, kay…

thank you for the reminder in your last sentence today … to make the most of every moment, to be present with loved ones. very wise words!

hope you, your husband and the fern have a wonderful weekend!

      kathy

ps … while i’ve thankfully not had but a couple moments of age-related angst in my life, i can relate to what your husband is going through. for a while around my 65th birthday last march i had on repeat the thought “how did we get here so fast? how did we get here so fast?!?” thankfully again, that didn’t last long. :) hopefully it’s the same for your husband. and you’re setting for him a great example … carry on!

Regarding yesterday’s post…..yes, I am suitably impressed with your fame!

Happy Fall! It’s finally arrived….and not a day too soon. Pleasant day here, rain tomorrow, then a week of low 70’s….sheer bliss.p in my book.

It’s outstanding that you’ve been able to keep a fern for 6 years…you’ve found the magic secret. Happy reading this weekend! ;)

dear Claudia/Don — Are you a ‘southern’ girl at heart ??? haha — s potato pie is an old southern recipe — I love it!! glad for your rain — still none here but, at least, temps have come down to
70s-80s. we are very dry, wx says ‘maybe’ Sept 27 or 28 — sure hope so — your fern looks really great — we had one for years but tried to divide it, as it was monster size but did something wrong b/c none of it survived hope y’all can enjoy your week. stay safe

Don’s dad and mom were from Texas and Oklahoma, so he is a southern guy.

      Stay safe, Linda.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
