September.
That came up rather quickly, didn’t it?
I remember when summer seemed to last forever; a long stretch of endless days of reading, riding bikes, playing outside, camping. Ninety days turned into 1000 days. Three months were more like six months.
As we get older, not so much. A summer seems to fly by. A blink of the eye and suddenly leaves are on the ground and the bright light of summer is beginning to turn into the golden light of autumn.
How grateful I am that this spring and summer were the first in a long time where I wasn’t away from home for several weeks. Only two and a half weeks in Chautauqua. I got to see the gardens in all their stages of growth. Usually, I miss either the beginning or the last couple of months of the gardens. So, I’m grateful.
It may be September, but the Chicken Wire Fence Garden is thriving. Leaves on the ground. Flowers blooming.
Sort of perfect.
I finished The Heist by Daniel Silva yesterday. I’m now reading The Marco Effect by Jussi Adler-Olsen (an author you really should get to know) and a wonderful book by Pat Conroy, My Reading Life. Conroy writes so beautifully that I’d even read his grocery list. He’s that good.
I also had a 2½ hour phone conversation with a wonderful friend of mine – a fellow voice/speech coach. Lovely. Don was away on a gig, so I took advantage of a chunk of quiet, undisturbed time in the house. It was so great to catch up with her.
And I mowed the whole front yard yesterday! That’s a workout, my friends, and I was exhausted afterward. It was more humid out there than I had thought. I was trying to beat out the rain that was coming (we really need it) and I managed to finish about ten minutes before the first drops fell. And then it rained quite a bit, which the gardens and trees and plants are clearly appreciating this morning.
My husband is a proud member of three unions. Unions gave actors fair pay, regular hours, protections of all kinds, and health benefits; things they didn’t have for years and years. Happy Labor Day.
Happy Monday.

Why is it that summer seems to fly and winter proceeds at a crawl?
Yay Unions!!!
Claudia says
Yes, winter seems to last forever!
Jan Wells says
So agree….summer has flown! I’ve just started following your blogs & so enjoy them. I’m going to add Pat Conroy’s book to my Kindle. Happy Fall!!!!
Claudia says
I think you’ll love his book. It’s a series of essays on books and reading and words and bookstores.
Elizabeth (Silver's Reviews) says
This summer has just flown by. :(
This entire year has.
I love your porch photo. Beautiful stone floor and doggie.
ENJOY your day. Today is very muggy here in Pittsburgh.
Elizabeth
Claudia says
Muggy here, too. It is supposed to be hot and somewhat humid all week long!
Janet in Rochester says
When you’re waiting for anything, Time crawls. And of course it zips right along when you’re enjoying something. One of God’s little ironies I guess. Me? I’m not saying goodbye to Summer until I officially have to. In about 3 weeks. Enjoy your day!
Claudia says
Oh, I’m not either. I make it last until I’m ready (or forced) to let go!
Tammy says
September already! Unbelievable! I miss autumn — we have horrible weather here. Can’t even touch the steering wheel in the afternoon after school — so dang hot! 3 books at one time. Wow! I finished on this summer and am halfway through another that I’ve not picked up since we returned from the States in early August. Have a good day. Tammy
Claudia says
I’m really at a point where I prefer reading over most anything! Spurred on, I suppose, by the newish book blog.
Sally says
Hi Claudia,
So glad you were able to be home with your beloved garden this summer.
I was thinking I’d only read one book of Pat Conroy’s, The Water is Wide, which I loved … but then I remembered I’d also read The Prince of Tides.
To each his own I know but I don’t understand people who are anti-union? Workers would still be working long hours, under the most unsafe and dire of conditions, have no vacation days and sick days, etc. (And still so much work to be done yet to catch up with the rest of the western world!) My husband belongs to the teachers union and we are very grateful for its existence.
Getting off my soap box now – David’s making me French Toast :)
Happy Labor Day!
Claudia says
I know! I don’t understand the anti-union stuff, though I’m sure a lot of it is generated by companies that don’t want to be unionized. Walmart comes to mind. And McDonalds. Protecting our workers should be a priority. I grew up in Dearborn Michigan, home of Ford Motor Co., so unions have always been around me. My dad belonged to the union of telephone workers until he moved into management.
Much of this, just my opinion, is about giving more power to corporations and big business and less to the average guy/girl. Very indicative of the times. We see it happening everywhere. “Corporations are people” is one of the more egregious statements that has come out of the Supreme Court, but it’s a clear indicator of the way this country seems to be functioning at the moment.

Anytime I have both my girls home is a great time for me! Today is some grocery shopping and thinking about the upcoming week. I’m ready to start a new book as I finished one last night. It’s always fun to choose my next read! Wishing you a great day.
hugs,
Linda
Claudia says
Have fun with your girls, Linda. You must be having a great weekend!
Donnamae says
Summer has flown by…hasn’t it? Seems like it was the 4th of July only a few weeks ago! I used to be a proud member of the Teamsters..hehe! So is/was my hubby! I don’t understand people who are anti-union either…protecting worker rights SHOULD be priority one! I’ll exit soap box now…have a good day! ;)
Claudia says
You can stay on that particular soapbox as long as you want, Donnamae! Am I remembering correctly, or am I confusing you with someone else? Didn’t you drive a school bus at one time?
Donnamae says
I drove a city bus, as did hubby…then he became a mechanic at the bus company. And before you ask…we didn’t meet there…we met in college at UW! ;)
Claudia says
I am impressed. The very idea of doing that scares the crap out of me! Good for you!
Donnamae says
Thinking about it now quite frankly, it scares the crap out of me too! But, it was an interesting time in my life…and I made many wonderful friendships. And… I was out to prove that women could do those kind of jobs, just as well, if not better then men! It was the 70’s after all! ;)
Nancy Blue Moon says
I too am very impressed at Donnamae..I can’t imagine driving one of those huge buses through city streets..plus you never know who will be getting on that bus..You are right Claudia..Summer flies by and Winter crawls through..Here is hoping for a better Winter than we had last time..I was so worried about you all alone and all that snow to deal with..Let’s cross our fingers for this Winter..
Nancy Blue Moon says
Oh yeah..I forgot to tell you..I belonged to the state employees union until I got hurt at work and received a settlement..
Claudia says
I keep hearing reports that it’s going to be a very cold and snowy winter.
That news is too depressing for words.
Chris k in Wisconsin says
I heard those reports last week about the forthcoming winter here, as well. Makes my stomach hurt. Last week we were told day after day we were going to have heavy rain from last Thurs through today. Each day it didn’t happen, but they kept saying “tomorrow”. We have had less than 1/3 of an inch of rain total. We really need it.
My husband has been a member of the Teacher’s Union for over 38 years. It is so sad that our Governor (BTW he did not complete college), took nearly all union rights away from most of the members in this state. This anti-union mindset seems to be prevalent in a lot of the conservative/ tea-party thinking folks. What they are trying to kill / stifle is what scares me.
Hope your day is going well!!!!
Claudia says
I so hope your Governor is voted out of office in the next election. He is unfit to govern a state such as Wisconsin.
Chris k in Wisconsin says
We are committed and working hard towards that end, Claudia.
Claudia says
xo
Bess says
Claudia, your second photo- with the morning glories (sp?)- is especially beautiful! Have a great week! Bess
Judy Clark says
Summer sure whipped right past us for sure! I’ve enjoyed the not so hot summer after the one we had last year that was so bad. I don’t look forward to winter but am looking forward to the cooler weather of fall with all of it ‘s beauty and splendor.
