The Beginning of the Change of Seasons

September 16, 2023 at 9:08 am by Claudia

The view as we drove home from getting vaccinated. Just around that curve and down the road a bit is the nursery where I get all my plants.

We did have mild reactions, by the way. Nothing terrible, just feeling a bit achy, and not-quite-right. But, we got both vaccines at the same time, something we normally don’t do. I was a bit off all day long, Anyway, I’m feeling better today, as is Don. That’s good, as he has a gig this afternoon.

I may mow. We’ll see.

It’s turned much cooler – yesterday felt positively fall-like. I’m happy about that as the summer was far from ideal and I’m ready to move on.

I still see one or two of the groundhogs, but not very often. The babies are no longer babies and have found their own homes. I’m relieved not to have to monitor the garden constantly, but I do miss their playful presence. I ran across the photos I took of them when they first emerged with their mom and I got sad. Ah, well. I rarely see any of the rabbits either.

The groundhogs will start to hibernate next month. Although I’m ready for fall, there’s always a bit of melancholy attached to the seasonal change into fall and then winter. Don and I were sitting on the glider during a break from mowing and I looked out at all the trees and the green leaves and reminded him that we had waited all winter and into the early spring to finally see some green out there. And soon that will be gone.

But for now, my brown-eyed susans are still in bloom, lots of wildflowers are blooming, but the coneflowers are fading. The giant zinnias are still hanging in there and so are the Rose of Sharon bushes, both of which have plenty of buds yet to open. (I never know which plant names to capitalize!)

Even this fading zinnia is beautiful, almost sculptural. Time to take a walk around the property and take some pictures.

Stay safe.

Happy Saturday.

I still have my Susans, a very few sweet peas and four pathetic zinnias, but the phlox (I don’t have a lot) are still looking pretty! I have a couple of renegade Rose of Sharon. I’m not that fond of them, less because of the plant but because of their position. You just can’t dig those babies out and they’re so close to the foundation. But they are pretty!

Some of my phlox is going strong, but the older plants have dropped their petals.

      Stay safe, Jeanie.

I envy you the lovely gardens around you. So much to look at. We have a couple of trees and I do enjoy when the seasons change and the leaves with them. I hadn’t planned to get the flu shot and RSV at the same time but we just might do that. I’ll check into openings at my pharmacy next week. I have a dental appt on Wed so after that. I only want so much anxiety in one week. Enjoy the cooler temps and the changing scenery. Hugs!

Some people have been advised to get them at the same time, and others the exact opposite. There doesn’t seem to be any consensus!

Yes, best to eliminate extra sources of anxiety.

      Stay safe, Linda.

Autumn is definitely in the air, there’s the smell of woodsmoke everywhere. Every month I meet up with ex library colleagues for coffee and a catch up in the art gallery cafe which forms part of our building. So just before we met this lunchtime I walked over to the supermarket. As I was paying, the check out lady said “Have you had your flu jab?”. I thought that’s a bit personal😀 but I found myself saying “No, not yet but there’s supposed to be one reserved for me at my doctors”
She replied “We’re doing them today at the pharmacy, you don’t need an appointment”

I declined as I felt unprepared but I might return soon, it’s been a month since the doctors said they would send an appointment date.

    Happy Saturday

It’s handy. The pharmacist at our local market has given us flu shots in the past. I avoid going to the doctor as much as possible, so being able to get a shot at a pharmacy or grocery store is perfect for me.

      Stay safe, Dee Dee.

glad the shot reactions were mild and are now gone. stay well!

glad that don has another gig today!

here? glad to have six (!!!!!!) paper grocery bags full of paper gone … shredded. :) a local credit union offers this free service to the community (no need to have an account with them) two days a year and i am very grateful about that, sleep better knowing that stuff is safely gone. bought lots of groceries last night and (because that part took so long) delivered them today. did lots of small chores, then a bit of reading, a little knitting (dishcloth), visiting with family members and going to take a ride in the countryside. :) starting to see leaves change colors!

happy, safe saturday sunday sunday to everyone!

Yes, there is beauty even in the dying flowers in the garden. Our Phlox is still really going strong though with new bunches showing up in places they never were before. There’s yellow Linden leaves laying on the grass in the front yard already. Two blocks down is a maple that’s always the very first tree in the neighborhood to turn. It’s gorgeous all red and orange today and I’m both happy and sad about that.

Still, fall has over time become my very favorite season. I’m already planning which pumpkin and apple based recipes to bake in the coming weeks. Dean is leaning hard on me to get the shingles shots before considering any other this fall so I guess I’ll get it scheduled. Good that you had pretty mild reactions to your two shots.

    Take care,
    Kay

Mild, but the reaction hung around for a few days.

      Thanks, Kay!

The garden in our cottage provided so much pleasure to my husband

When he was diagnosed , and became too unwell to garden , I hired a gardener who I employ still .

It breaks y heart to see the garden looking beautiful, and Tony not here to see it

I am tired of being somewhere he is not

I’m so sorry, Siobhan. Your heart is broken and you miss Tony so much. I can’t say I know what you’re going through, but I do know how I would feel if Don wasn’t here. Sending sympathy and strength to you.

      Much love to you,
      Claudia

      siobhan …

i am very sorry for your loss and (if okay) am sending hugs to you.

i hope someday soon you find happiness in the garden that you and your beloved tony created together and sooner still be comforted by happy memories of tony and by God’s presence and His promises of eternal life.

i will keep praying for you and your tony.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
