White violets in the garden bed on the other side of the house. They’re quite beautiful this year.
I wandered around with my camera yesterday afternoon so I could have a record of this particular moment in time. It’s good for me. I feel my shoulders drop. Instead of a quick glance, I really see what has emerged from the ground.
I caught the bridal veil spirea a bit late in its bloom, but better late than never. I love the frothy look of what is usually a random green bush.
We’re laying low this weekend. My back needs a rest, Don’s had a difficult week. I’m working on my puzzle (Klimt) while Don plays his guitar and ukelele. I’m reading a lot as well. Both of us are stunned by Tolstoy’s writing. I’d put him right up there with Shakespeare – truly one of the greatest writers ever. What a gift this readalong is! I’m reading War and Peace – a tome I would normally avoid because of the commitment it requires. But with a chapter a day? No big deal. I love it.
The same man who started this is planning on a readalong next year of the Thomas Cromwell trilogy by Hilary Mantel. In this case, these are books I have avoided because I’m not a big fan of historical fiction. Yet I’ve heard so much praise for her writing, especially in the articles that were written at the time of her untimely death. So I’ll probably do that as well. Next year.
Okay.
Stay safe.
Happy Saturday.

Your pics are soothing…must be the white in the garden. I only have purple wild violets…and they’ve popped up in wonderful unexpected places this year.
I love that.
Sounds like a day of rest is needed by both of you. We are off to visit a friend on the eastern side of the state. A get-out-of -town day and a long visit with an old friend is much needed by both of us.
Hope you enjoy your day! ;)
Claudia says
Thanks so much, Donnamae.
Stay safe.
Tana says
I have never read War and Peace. Maybe it’s time. I never thought of a chapter a day, but I am pretty sure I can do that. You both rest and enjoy the peace and quiet of your lovely home and land.
Claudia says
Thank you, Tana.
Stay safe.

with all you and don have been dealing with lately (and even without those sad, tough things), you surely deserve time “off”. glad that’s what you’ve planned for the day.
also glad you both are enjoying “war and peace” and the read-along. am not sure my attention span could handle that right now. maybe, hopefully someday …?
there were bridal veil bushes along the driveway of the home i grew up in … love them!
just got an oil change for my car. now waiting for a donation site to open at 9 am. will run a few more errands, then spend the night with members of my family. :)
stay safe and hope you all have a great weekend, too!

I’m absolutely sure your attention span could handle it. A chapter a day – usually 2 or 3 pages at most? Of course! Whether you want to, of course, is a different thing and entirely your choice.
Have a lovely weekend, Kathy.
Stay safe.
kathy in iowa says
wow … i will check it out. i was thinking chapters of “war and peace” would be much longer than two or three pages. thanks, claudia!
hope you’re in the middle of a good book, puzzle and weekend!
kathy
Claudia says
So did I! But they’re surprisingly short.

Another read along you might enjoy is the current daily posting of the Samuel Pepys diary – you’d have to play a bit of catch up as it started in January (as I recall) but the daily entries are very short, and there are wonderful annotations by interested readers, some of whom are quite the scholars! Reading it an entry a day (once you catch up) gives a very contemporaneous feel, and is much more enjoyable and revealing than the random days I recall being assigned to read in school.
You know, in your spare time….

We have his diary and read it together a few years back. I love it.
Stay safe, Ceci.

Enjoy your quiet time with War and Peace, other books you’re reading, and the Klimt puzzle. I like Klimt a lot, and have fabric and needlework inspired by Klimt.
I’m seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. Both daughters finally tested negative for COVID,. I’m actually amazed I didn’t catch it. The last two weeks have been me being busy preparing food and cleaning up. But I also know how bored they were isolating in their rooms. They return to work Monday.
Claudia says
So glad the girls tested negative, Wendy! Good news.
Stay safe.
Vicki says
Get well soon with that back!
Claudia says
Thanks, Vicki!

We’re having a peaceful rainy Saturday, too. Loved your spirea bush. We have one in our backyard but it isn’t as far along as yours. I’m wating for our lily-of-the-valley to bloom. I had some in my wedding bouquet 47 years ago June 5th. We snipped a piece of ivy from my bouquet and rooted it. It’s still flourishing after all this time and it is quite large. Enjoy your reads. Rest up. Hugs, Elaine
Claudia says
Oh, what a lovely remembrance for you and your husband, Elaine!
Love that.
Stay safe.
Kay in SE WI says
Beautiful pictures. I have to remember to take my camera next time I wander around the flower beds too. It’s always such a miracle each spring to see everything come up and then bloom.
The Cromwell trilogy is something I’ve had on my TBR list for a while. Be curious to hear your take on them if you do this readalong.
Claudia says
It won’t start until January, but I’ll share more information then.
Stay safe, Kay.
jeanie says
I’d say do the Cromwell/Mantel books. They’re very good (especially the first two). And it makes some sense to read them fairly close together. I had gaps and found myself going back to the earlier ones for a reminder.
Claudia says
Thanks for the advice, Jeanie. I’m looking forward to it!
Stay safe.
Marcia says
Please let us know about next year’s read along with the Hilary Mantel trilogy. I would love to join that one! Thanks.
Claudia says
I’ll probably have more information in November/December, Marcia.
