Tiptoe Through the Tulips

March 29, 2016 at 8:20 am by Claudia

3-29 tulips2

No wonder tulips are the subject of so many paintings. They’re rather perfect. I love the touch of white on the edges of the pink petals.

We’re in the middle of a wind ‘event.’ Do not like. I used to love the wind, but since we moved here, to this property with oh-so-many trees, I get nervous and edgy. It started around 5:00 pm yesterday and it’s still going on. I can never truly relax when this sort of thing is happening. Perhaps some coloring should be on the docket for today?

3-29 tulips1

I’m in the midst of some research for my next coaching job. Darko is bringing me in on his next production: Anastasia, a musical. It starts rehearsals next week. I’m going to be there off and on during the rehearsal period because there are lots of Russian and French names that have to be pronounced correctly. I read the script yesterday, wrote down all the names, and now I have to figure out the pronunciations and transcribe them phonetically.

I think they’re aiming to eventually produce this on Broadway – fingers crossed.

I’ve also got a day or two consulting on some projects being produced by an old friend of mine – sometime in early April.

It’s always good for a freelancer like me to have some work on the horizon.

3-29 tulips3

I’ve got a book review scheduled for tomorrow – it’s been a while, hasn’t it? It’s a very good book and I’ll tell you more about it then. I’ve been neglectful of my book blog and I want to start posting more regularly, but this period starting when my father died on October 29th has taken its toll in many ways, one of which is blogging about books. I’m reading. I love books. But writing about them has been difficult. I promise to do better very soon.

Happy Tuesday.

I love hearing about your work! It sounds exciting to work with artists of speech. I know it is not always financially rewarding but what an interesting career. Did you ever tell us how this work came into being?

I did. It’s somewhere on the blog. I have an MFA in Acting. I taught voice, speech and dialects at Boston University for five years and then I taught at the University of San Diego for 8 years. I have coached actors in these disciplines professionally for at least 30 years, starting in Philadelphia, moving on to Boston, then San Diego and the Old Globe Theater and now I freelance everywhere.

and now Tiny Tim is singing in my brain…please stop!! Tulips are such a pretty flower. It is good to have work on the horizon and the new project with Darko sounds interesting. I’m debating going to the Dr, but will need someone to call for me. It’s awful without a voice. Seeing my Mom later so I’ll get her to call for me. Hoping that wind goes away soon.
    hugs,
    Linda

Tiny Tim is busy this morning he’s visiting my head too! It sounds like you’re going to have a busy April Claudia. Wouldn’t that be cool if your play made it to Broadway? Fingers crossed here too. Wind. We had such a lot of it out here over the past year. But today has dawned a beautifully sunny day that is very calm. I hope you enjoy your day Claudia.
    Blessings, Betsy

I did not need Tiny Tim singing that song in my head….even if it is about tulips…make it stop! I’m glad there’s work on the horizon for you…something to look forward to, and provides a distraction, as well as income. No wind here today….just sunshine and warmth. I’m going to tour the estate, our city lot, and see what’s up? Enjoy your day! ;)

Have a good time, Donnamae. Don has hurt his ankle in some mysterious way, so I’m going to drive him to a meeting and then run some errands.

If you think being tortured by having “Tip Toe Through The Tulips” Tiny Tim style stuck in your head is funny…Ever since we talked about Garry Shandling’s passing I’ve had the theme song from “It’s Garry Shandling’s Show” stuck in my head….It’s like one last laugh from him…lol..

    Claudia,
I am in central Pennsylvania and we had those winds yesterday. I too found it unsettling. Picture trying to take a 5 pound Chihuahua out in it. Your tulips are beautiful. Red tulips are my favorite. I actually have a beautiful pot of them now and if I had a blog, I would post a picture.

It is still windy here today, though not as bad as yesterday. I’m right there with you when it comes to many large trees on our property. It’s a bit scary. On the bright side, at least it’s not snowing too!

Sorry to read about Don’s ankle. Hope it is nothing serious.

Will be anxious to read of your work on Anastasia. Sounds fascinating!

I seem to be in the minority so I’m wondering – what’s wrong with me? I just LOVE windy days! Always have, ever since I was really little. Windy SUNNY days of course. But I don’t really mind cloudy ones either. And I love dry windy Fall days when crispy leaves are swirling everywhere in little circular eddies. I only mind it if it’s snowing and I have to drive in it. Or blowing down branches and trees. Or turning the neighbors’ lawn chairs into airborne projectiles. PS – you are so right about tulips. “They’re rather perfect…” describes them to a T. I particularly love the “two-tone” tulips myself. My Mom always had a drift of the dark blueberry-purple color with white ones as well. Just gorgeous. ?

I loved windy days when I was a kid, but when you have dozens of trees, several of which are almost on top of the house, things change!

The power of blogging….I’ve never met you but thought of you this morning when the wind was, and still is, blowing like crazy. You mentioned, when you were in Hartford, that the wind was whipping around the buildings. It’s just so unsettling when it goes on for hours and hours.

Yes, that’s it. If it’s just a short windy stretch, I can handle it – but 12 – 24 hours of it – sometimes, days of it – is just too much!

seemed like there were only two seasons while we were living in El Paso, Tx. Windy and hot. I remember watching the walls of our living room move ( almost like it was breathing) when winds were going. I don’t miss the windy season there. I do like windy days. As long as there aren’t any hurricanes involved.

Have you seen the movie Anastasia with Yul Brenner and Ingrid Berman? One of my favorite films. The story of Anastasia was always fascinating.

    Please not Tiny Tim!!!

Well, I love tulips; I have strong Dutch heritage. Yours are beautiful; mine got fried in the heatwave we had, just as they were forcing. Sigh. Next year…

I can’t stay out of the garden center. I arrived today JUST as the delivery truck came with FRESH, gorgeous herbs, flowers and veggies from the wholesale nursery. Vigorous, lush lemon cucumbers and lemon basil. I picked up some varieties of mint a few days ago, including chocolate mint and apple mint; never have tried to grow apple mint. I have to be careful not to go overboard. We only have so much room to plant but I’m going to experiment with containers this year—like large pots, not necessarily our raised planters—even with the cherry tomatoes. But I didn’t even spend five bucks today; I was careful!

We didn’t even hit 70 degrees midday. That doesn’t happen too much here where I live in SoCalif so it was a real treat. Sunny, cool breeze; bluest sky, big puffy white clouds that turned to rain clouds (L.A. got rain but not us in the burbs).

You’ve got a lot of interesting work coming up! I hope it will bolster you and that you’ll enjoy every minute, so take us along and let us know what you’re doing when you’re away. Don will miss you.

I had to exclaim just now; rather, utter a howl. I’ve been away all day and not near a computer, sat down to check email at the desk and ANOTHER headline of someone in my pop culture realm DYING, AGAIN, IN THEIR 60s. It is an EPIDEMIC since January. Patty Duke…oh dear. No, no, no. How I loved her show when I was a kid, when she played the dual role of cousins. On a clip about her passing…I think it was on CNN…they played the theme music from the show and I could recite every word of that ‘open’ to the series just like I sang it when I was a child. Our fellow boomers in the news/entertainment world are leaving us ‘way too soon. She certainly had some great acting roles, didn’t she (Helen Keller).

    Claudia,

I’m checking in from what has been a week of certified chaos. Aside from my husband being in a wreck which tore the bumper and grill off the front end of our beloved 29 year old Volvo (the other person’s fault), it has just been crazy. Thankfully, my sweet husband wasn’t hurt worse. That car is solid steel.

I haven’t had a chance to blog or to get your package mailed. It is riding shotgun in my van, but I am out of strapping tape. Will hopefully get it o you soon. Just didn’t want to disappoint you since I had intended for it to go out last week. xo

Your tulips are lovely, and I was thinking of Scout’s bunny ears and my babies, too. They also had bunny ears for Easter and hooded rain slickers in red and yellow that they would have worn out in the monsoon rain we had yesterday. I got soaked trying to get a few feet into a building where I had a meeting. Ended up using a plastic bag as a rain hat of sorts. Not very becoming, but it sort of did the trick. My shoes were another matter. ;-)

Your new book sounds like a great read, and I enjoyed BEACH MUSIC years ago when a friend recommended it. I hope you enjoy it. I, too, have been so upset about Pat Conroy. :-(

On a psitive note, I am very proud of you on your upcoming projècts and am hoping the Russian play makes it to Broadway! You go, girl! :-)

Praying the wind event subsides and am sending tender hugs to you and Don on the death of your friend, Gary. It seems that we have been to one funeral after another of late, and it is wrenching. And I know you have been reeling, too. I the mean time, there is the beauty of spring. Hope yours is extra beautiful this year.

    xo

Hi Claudia, agree with you about the wind ,I am afraid of it but also excited because we live by the sea now and I love to go out on a windy day and watch the power of it and scare myself. When I came out of my Colouring group today my feet took me into the bookshop next door and before I knew it I was buying yet another colouring book but a rather different sort. It looked like an ordinary Penguin paperback but was in fact a book of 100 classic covers from genuine Penguin books of all sorts, and since you are a bit of a bookworm I thought you may want to explore it. I have already done Clockwork Orange and am beginning Walden although theoretically it’s bedtime! It has fiction,poetry,non-fiction etc even how to grow vegetables and a vintage knitting book cover.
My Tulips are a bit behind yours here in Wales but they will catch up and then my husband and I have a holiday planned to visit our son who lives in Amsterdam and we will then be in Tulip heaven! Take care and hope hubby hops around better soon.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
