War and Peace, Rain, and the Clown Show

January 5, 2023 at 9:12 am by Claudia

Day three of rain and dark skies, with not even a wee bit of sunshine. Both Don and I find it depressing. But, it’s a gentle rain, rather than what hit the Bay area yesterday. I need to do some reading about it, but it was very intense with lots of damage, that’s for sure. Take care of yourselves.

This arrived in yesterday’s mail. Oh boy! So far, I’ve been keeping up with reading a chapter a day. I may have to play catch-up when I’m dealing with long, long days in the city. It’s too bulky to carry with me on the commute. That, a script, and another book? Nope. So far, the chapters are on the short side.

I walked down to the mailbox to get it, brought it inside and took it out of its packing. Then I walked over to Don to show him the size of the book. I had previously had a conversation with him about the readalong, explaining that I would be reading a chapter a day. Much to my surprise, Don saw the book and said “I should do this, too.” What??? Don is a nonfiction guy. So I was surprised and happy. I think the ‘chapter a day’ idea makes the thought of reading the book so much less formidable. So, he ordered his own copy. I’m looking forward to future discussions.

Other than that, nothing else is new. It’s too dreary outside to take walks. We’ve been watching the GOP members of the house and their complete disarray – a clown show. The next two years will be full of  ‘investigations’ and performative ‘look at me!’ faux outrage. Legislation to help Americans? Don’t think so. There certainly wasn’t any positive legislation during their previous reign. It’s depressing. But, it’s like watching a car wreck – you can’t take your eyes off of it.

When having power for the sake of power is the only thing that matters to you, perhaps running for office as a public servant isn’t your best option.

Sigh.

I’m definitely too old for all of this.

Stay safe.

Happy Thursday.

I should dig out my old copy (my mom’s, actually) of War and Peace, if we still have it and join along. A chapter a day seems logical and I love that Don will do this with you.

Loads of drear here, too. Outside and in DC.

Glad you and Don are reading the book together. Hope your project goes well in the city. My youngest grand girl and I start back today on FaceTime school. She finishes in May and then college. The middle grand girl graduates college in May. She is studying in Italy this month.the eldest grand girl graduated Purdue last year. She lives Brooklyn and works NYC. She studied in Italy and Greece and was at Bristol in U K a when Covid hit. The girls have done this on their own with grants loans and scholarships. They were home schooled. The two little boys are on break u til Monday.
They do Spanish and Math and all of their running and swimming on break also and Tae Kwan Do. We find time for tons of games. My five blessings. My life is full. I also start back with my little East coast kiddo next week. Hope you and Don have a great day reading and music. It is rainy here and comes so seldom we love it. I walked two times this morning and now getting ready to work with grand. You are a true blessing to your readers.

You have a true reading partner! That’ll be nice to share thoughts about the book! I agree with all your comments regarding the GOP voting for Speaker of the House. Yesterday was very rainy, again, and quite windy in the Bay Area…but fortunately no damage where I am…flooding is expected in some areas, though. I volunteer at the local Clothes Closet, part of the food pantry, so people should be able to get out and get what they need this morning before more rains come. Hope it’s a calm day for everyone!

It’s more fun when you have a book partner to discuss what you read. I’ve never read War and Peace. I have always thought it would be quite a chore but maybe a chapter a day is doable. I hope you and Don enjoy it.

The weather is strange here in Michigan. We had a good snowstorm at Christmas and then it warmed up and all the snow is gone. It’s been in the 40’s for the most part. Very unusual for January but I’m enjoying it.
    Take care

sounds wonderful that you and don will be reading “war and peace” together! :)

i’d take the rain for you if i could. it snowed here last night … maybe an inch fell while i was getting groceries and it was pretty, but i definitely prefer rain.

agree about the “clown show” that is much of congress. ):( and that there is apparently no law against lying during an election so george santos will keep his well- and tax-payer-paid position?!? obscene. the people of that district deserve a special election. better still if santos is immediately impeached, but doubt that will happen. even less likely that santos would resign. ugh.

some of my family and i went for a ride yesterday, pulled over on a quiet road for seeing something different … at least a dozen swans. they stayed on the ground a while, then took flight, honking as they rose, and it was all beautiful! :)

i now have more light in my living room for being the steward of another family lamp … one of a pair that belonged to my maternal grandparents. found a lampshade for it last night, but will be looking for some way or someone to change the fabric on it. :)

need to get back to things here.

    happy, safe thursday to everyone!

        hej, brenda. :)

no room for jigsaw puzzles at my little place, which is unfortunate because i’ve always loved them.

reading more, but not as much as i’d like … currently some agatha christie stories. also i read the Bible daily.

i can do a little knitting when with my family. trying to get counted cross-stitch gifts done for them, but i have to be alone to do that. i love to paint and want to try sketching. my bigger, long-haul creative goal is to finish some picture books.

        how about you?

hope all’s well (sounds like it) and you are having a good day! :)

I don’t know – Four days in a row of cold, damp weather and lots of rain isn’t at all nice.

      Glad you have more light!

      Stay safe.

It’s been gloomy here as well. We’ve had rain for a few days, that has turned to snow, so even though the sun isn’t out, it seems brighter. I’ll take that.

Reading War and Peace together seems perfect for you two. I hope that works out.

The clown show is a perfect name for the antics currently going on in Congress. I’ve seen bits, but have not watched for very long. I read that a republican from NC was blaming democrats for not voting for Donalds. So, democrats should save republicans? I think 6 republicans should vote for Hakeem Jeffries. How about that? That sounds good to me.

So…get out your popcorn…and enjoy your day! ;)

I’d take snow at this point but of course it’s not going to come until next week when I’m trying to commute into the city. Crap.

Yes, I agree. It’s a debacle of their own making. The responsibility is theirs. It isn’t up to the Dems to bail them out.

      Stay safe, Donnamae.

It is just farcical (wow! when was the last time I used that word?) what the republicans are
doing. It actually scares me. They are so incompetent which means they are dangerous.

    Take Care,

Indeed. They are incompetent, and in some cases ignorant beyond belief. It’s mind boggling.

I read War and Peace on a dare from my husband. He gave it to me as a Christmas gift.
I only read at lunchtime at work it took 7 years to read but I finished and glad I did.
Have to point out it was a hard read for me and I took major breaks between reading it.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
