Yellow and The Island

August 5, 2017 at 8:53 am by Claudia

Yesterday was a long day; full of painting, and incredibly humid at the same time. I didn’t take a shower until 7 pm! Everything is done on that wall except for the trim around the window, which I’ll do this weekend.

We really like the yellow, which changes as the day goes on. On this dark and rainy morning, it looks like this:

But it’s actually lighter than this – a buttercream yellow. It makes us happy. Now the big question is whether we do it on all the walls or just this one? We’re going to wait on that decision. Actually, we have no choice. I have much to do, we have much to do, including looking for a smaller kitchen island. I’ll have more photos soon.

Yes, I know. Everyone loves that island, including me. It has been an incredible boon to us with storage and an additional counter surface. But it’s huge. Mammoth. 68 inches long, 38 inches high. It will block part of the view of the stove. The stove is deeper than the one we have, which means we’d have to move the island closer to where the refrigerator is, and that would make getting around the kitchen even more difficult.

This one isn’t easy for me. I’m already in mourning. But we want to see  our vintage stove, which will be and should be the star of the kitchen. With the old island in here, I’d never be able to get a full-on photo of it. We’re rethinking the storage of kitchen items. What to pitch and what to keep. And I am leaving in 5 days! A bit overwhelming, but this darn gorgeous and large vintage stove has made us rethink everything!

The island, pretty as it is, has chipped paint most of the time. It’s so big that it makes it difficult to clean around it. Time to move on. Sigh. Don came up with the idea of using it on the porch as a potting bench/storage unit and it looks pretty good there. We’re trying that out.

A photo of us from the other night. We were out to dinner, trying to take a selfie (we’re woefully inept at that) and collapsed into giggles. It was a celebratory dinner, but that’s all I can say at this moment. More soon.

It’s blurry, but it makes me smile a lot.

We’re off to do some antiquing/treasure hunting in the Berkshires.

Happy Saturday.

That plant is over 40 years old. It was my parents’. They had two of them. When my dad passed away, Meredith took one and I took the other. It’s very precious to us!

You guys are too funny. Don’s hair is wild! Fun! And I love the yellow.

Glad you repurposed the island. I swear every piece of furniture I’ve ever gotten rid of, I still think of and regret its loss. My husband thinks that’s really ‘sick’ – unnatural attachment to material objects. I disagree! We are who we are. But, yes, we also have to move on; shed a skin for a new and fresh one. Out with an old year, in with a new. And so on.

I try to imagine these areas you live in. The Berkshires. That James Taylor song, “Sweet Baby James” (‘Now the first of December was covered with snow, and so was the turnpike from Stockbridge to Boston. though the Berkshires seemed dreamlike on account of that frosting,
with ten miles behind me and ten thousand more to go…’/the soundtracks of my younger life!)…

Don’s hair is really wild. He had to let it grow long for Margaritaville.

I am still missing that island in the kitchen. I bought it for $60 at an auction. Sigh.

The Berkshires are beautiful but we didn’t have too much time yesterday to enjoy that beauty.

I love a yellow kitchen! Can’t wait to see the new stove in place and whatever you choose for an island. I know the new island will be wonderful. What is that saying… “smile and the world smiles with you”? Your post and pic made me smile, enjoy your day.

Love your ‘selfie’ picture. You look like two kids in a candy store! Does this celebratory picture have anything to do with ‘Escape to Margaritaville’… like maybe it’s going to Broadway with Don in it? That’s the first thought that came to my mind when I saw the picture.
Love the yellow wall and can hardly wait to see your new ‘baby’ in its place on that wall. I’m also anxious to see what you come up with for an island. I loved the buffet that was the island but understand why it won’t work any more. If you put it on the porch as Don suggested as least you will still have it to love and enjoy.

I really do love the soft yellow. I think moving the island to the porch for a potting bench is a great idea. It’s hard to change things sometimes but this sounds like a positive move and that stove will be the star of the kitchen for sure. Love the photo of you too, so cute. I’m excited about good news, soon I hope!! Hoping to see the Grands today, it’s been over a week. Tiger starts school next week. Moe did not visit last night, hope he comes back! Hugs!

That is the perfect yellow for your kitchen. Such a happy color. And that pic of you two giggling away…priceless! (I’ll keep my thoughts to myself….don’t want to jinx anything…about the cause of the celebration.). I’m glad Don found a place for your old island. Now, you have the pleasure of shopping for another. Temps have moderated here nicely…70’s, so I’m off to pull weeds. Enjoy your day! ;)

I like the yellow, too, Claudia. My kitchen is red, which everyone said was too bold a choice, but I knew once the cabinets were installed and the appliances placed, it wouldn’t be a lot of red. Now everyone says they like my choice. Glad you found a new use for the island. I would love a work surface that big for my crafting!

I miss the surface space because I often stood there and wrote out checks, etc. I used to wrap all my Etsy orders there, as well.

I love that yellow! Along with white, it’s just NEVER wrong in a kitchen. And it will definitely brighten things up on dark rainy days. I read somewhere – about 20 years ago – that if you want to sell a house quickly, paint it yellow! Apparently yellow houses go faster than any other color. Trivia for today. Enjoy the rest of your weekend. 💛

PS – can’t wait to find out what you two were celebrating!

Oh, I can only chime in here with more likes, hopes, and wishes. But the yellow is lovely and makes me a little homesick for my yellow kitchen appliances at the beach. Hope you find just the perfect kitchen island…to replace the other nearly perfect one.

Sad that the wonderful island has come to an end, but you are certainly right about who should be the new star in the kitchen!! And being able to repurpose it is a very good thing! Now to set out and find the new island.

Can’t wait to hear about the celebration. I have my thoughts about it……… anxious for the “announcement”! Life is ever-changing, isn’t it?

I like yellow walls to and have an even softer yellow than yours in our small office off the kitchen, and our two guest bedrooms. The prior color was a brown. Much too dark for this house, especially during the darker winter months. I know you are going to enjoy your yellow walls too! As for that selfie…. LOVE IT!

I’m leaning toward painting everything but the cupboards, pantry, trim and door in yellow. So – basically – the walls yellow and everything else in ivory white.

Love the yellow, loved the island but it will be a great piece for potting. Will it be covered? I would like an indoor piece for outdoors. I put a chair out on the porch to test it’s weathering…can’t wait for fun news!

I love the yellow in your kitchen. We have a crayon yellow in our dining room and family room and it makes me happy during our long gray Oregon winter. Like sunshine. I’m excited for your new vintage stove.. I look forward to seeing it in place. I was also happy that those two R women voted the right way and McCain came through. I have this awful thought that they will wait until McCain passes away and try to vote it in again. :-( You’ll need a Hoosier now to go with the stove! ((hugs)), Teresa :-)

I am, too. I wouldn’t put it past them to try to ram it through when McCain is no longer with us. I hope that they work together with Dems as they’ve been saying they will. That’s the way to work toward a solution for everyone!

    Hi Claudia,
Can’t wait to see your new vintage stove in your kitchen. I know you are pressed for space and storage. My kitchen is the same way. My dishwasher was not working and I hated the way my microwave took up precious counter space. I threw the dishwasher to the curb. The bare space where the dishwasher used to be is 35″ tall x 24″ wide. Fisher & Paykel make a drawer style dishwasher which is perfect for two people. Depending on the model they are 16″ to 17″ tall. I am installing the dishwasher on the lower space, then building a shelf above the dishwasher to house my microwave. Just wanted to share this with you in case you might want to install a drawer style dishwasher instead of a full size one.

It’s a good idea, Bea. I think I’d probably get a full-sized dishwasher, however, so that we could save up all our dishes and only run it once a day or every other day. If we can find a smaller microwave, I think we could swing it. But I checked out a smaller microwave the other day and it was TOO light and the door didn’t work very well.

      Still looking!
