Giveaway: “Bedrooms” – A Coloring Book by Amanda Atkins

August 1, 2016 at 10:08 am by Claudia

When I first started blogging over eight years ago, I had no idea if anyone would ever find me on the internet, let alone leave a comment. I really did feel like I was a speck in a vast wilderness. I did what was recommended; visit other blogs, leave a comment, and hope against hope that blogger would return the visit.

One of those bloggers did stop by. In fact, she was my very first blogging friend: Donna, of An Enchanted Cottage. Donna, a fellow Northeasterner, and I share many of the same loves, including nature, gardening, decorating and, above all, animals. We have stayed friends for over eight years and she has been steadfast and true. When Riley died, Donna made a beautiful framed piece based on a photo I had posted of Riley and Scout (my favorite photo) and moved both Don and me to tears. It hangs on my wall just outside my office.

Donna is very talented and is a working artist as well as a the owner of a successful Etsy shop. She has two daughters, both adults now (how did that happen so quickly?) and one of them, Amanda, is also an artist.

Which brings me to today’s post. Amanda has just had her first Coloring Book published by Pomegranate Press! Huzzah!

Bedroom Book cover

Bedrooms – A Coloring Book by Amanda Laurel Atkins.

Amanda and Donna graciously sent me a copy of Bedrooms. You know I love coloring books! I was floored when I first held it in my hands. First of all, it has a hard cover that opens flat. (I don’t see that out there in the coloring book world.) So much easier to color! Each page has a blank page as its back, so no worries about coloring on both sides of the sheet of paper. The quality and heft of the paper is perfect for coloring. And each page is laid out horizontally, rather than vertically, just as the cover indicates. The binding runs right alongside the edge above the title. It is beautifully done.

These photos don’t really show the crispness of the lines, but trust me, they are crisp and clear. They’re also not too thick. Personally, I have passed on purchasing certain coloring books out there because the lines are too thick, almost like you’d see in a child’s coloring book. This one is perfect.

Donna and Amanda shared some pages that they colored themselves:

Bedroom Book 1a

Bedroom Book 2

The illustrations are full of books, paintings, animals, and nature, things that Amanda loves.

I often think about my childhood bedroom, which for a girl who needed a good chunk of alone time, was a refuge that was all mine. I could shut the door and be in a world that was entirely my own. That same feeling is evoked in these illustrations.

Amanda: Bravo! Such beautiful work!

By the way, here’s a bit of information about Amanda:

Amanda Purple shirt summer 2016 Backyard

Amanda Laurel Atkins is an artist and illustrator living and working in Boston, MA. Her work is inspired by the 1950s, architecture, fashion, color, animals, and literature. While her paintings focus on portraits of fictional women, her illustrations span a vast array of subject matter, including the many rooms in Bedrooms. Amanda loves walking and exploring her city and spending time with her family, friends, and all the animals in her life. You can explore her work at AmandaAtkins.com.

You can purchase this delightful book in Amanda’s Etsy shop and at Pomegranate Press as well as on Amazon.

Exciting news! Amanda would like to share one copy of Bedrooms with one of my readers. Isn’t that wonderful?

Here are the rules: Leave a comment on this post before 8 pm on Monday August 8th and I will use Random (dot) org to pick a winner.

In your comment: Tell me what it is about your bedroom that you love.

Good luck! And thank you, Amanda and Donna.

Happy Monday.

Sunday: Sleeping In, Mourning Doves & Miniatures

July 31, 2016 at 9:55 am by Claudia

What a treat! I slept in today and it wasn’t because I was up too late. I just slept. I wonder if it was because we had a gentle rain all night long? I don’t know. I’m just grateful – sleeping in is rare for me nowadays.

We mowed yesterday. I weed chomped. It’s looking pretty good out there, though I have some cleaning up to do on the porch, which also functions as my garden tool/potting center. And, of course, cleaning on the inside of the house, as well.

Don pointed out these two yesterday and I ran for my camera:

As far as I can tell, there’s a single mourning dove who lives on the property and this pair. The pair does everything together; I’ll see them on the driveway looking for food, they come to the birdbath together, they depart at exactly the same time and fly up into the catalpa tree.

I love them. Mourning Doves are my favorite birds.

I received my July Squint Box in the mail yesterday after it somehow went to Birmingham, Alabama from White Plains, NY, then traveled back to NY and finally arrived here.

This month’s theme was Summer Love.

It’s gloomy out there, so this is the best I can do, photo-wise.

A ceramic dish with real seashells, a hand painted clay pot with apples,  a glass apothecary jar with gumballs, an iced coffee, a box of tissues, and a copy of Travel & Leisure magazine.

Isn’t this little group of minis just the coolest?

Today, we’re headed out to an event this afternoon and then I have errands to run and then more cleaning.

I’ve started to keep a tally of the lies I’m hearing on a daily basis from the Orange Man. In each case, the statement can be proven to be a lie in an instant. Truly, the mind boggles.

My new hero is Khizr Khan.

(As always, if you don’t like my political commentary, you are free to move on. I’m not going to shut up.)

Happy Sunday.

The Garden, Weed Chomping & Emoticons

July 30, 2016 at 9:30 am by Claudia

7-30 phloxandyarrow

A Saturday morning with some rainy days ahead means more mowing and weed chomping today. I’ve decided I’m going to use ‘Weed Chomping’ instead of constantly wondering whether it’s ‘whacking’ or ‘wacking.’ Henceforth: Weed Chomper, Weed Chomping.

Anyway, the weed chomper’s battery ran out of charge rather quickly yesterday, so I’ll finish the job today. We mowed the front yard yesterday in the midst of seemingly lower temps but actually very high humidity, which left us dripping. Dripping, I tell you.

7-30 butterflyinflowers

The garden is so pretty at the moment. The phlox is blooming, the bee balm is hanging in there, the rudbeckia is gorgeous, the coneflowers are in every garden bed, with a few that have self-seeded in interesting spots here and there.

7-30 butterflybush

In the bed on the side of the house, the butterfly bush is starting to bloom, along with the liatris, daylilies and coneflowers. All in all, a very pretty time that I hope will stay just as it is through my best friend’s visit on Wednesday.

By the way, I refuse to use BFF or any of that sort of thing. If I can’t use the entire word, I’m in trouble. And I’m an official Eschewer of Emoticons. Yes, I have weakened as to the use of  hashtags, but other than that? Words are important. Hopefully I can find a way to write here in this space and on Instagram that describes the way I feel at any given time, without resorting to a smiley face. I don’t mind others using emoticons at all. I just can’t do it. But you can use them here to your heart’s content!

Ask any of my longtime friends: I was on record as a Detester of Smiley Faces in the seventies. Oh, yes. I couldn’t stand them; indeed, so much so that my friends loved to send me anything with a smiley face on it just to see my reaction.

My beloved McCoy Pottery made a piece with a smiley face.

I don’t want it.

Claudia: Eschewer of Emoticons, Detester of Smiley Faces. Uses a Weed Chomper.

I have a neat giveaway coming up next week. Stay tuned.

Speaking of giveaways, the winner of a copy of The Branson Beauty  is ChrisK in Wisconsin! (I choose the winners of these giveaways through Random (dot) org, which generates a number, you guessed it, randomly. Chris, congratulations! Send me you address and I’ll forward to TLC Book Tours.

Happy Saturday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
