Book Review: Ruthless by John Rector

June 25, 2015 at 7:48 am by Claudia

Unknown

Today I am reviewing Ruthless  by John Rector for TLC Book Tours. As always, I receive a copy of the book in exchange for my honest review.

About the book (from the publisher): Nick White is the only person who can save Abigail Pierce. After uncovering a plot to have her killed, he attempts to warn her, but instead puts himself squarely in the crosshairs. They know who he is, they know where he lives, they know how to get at his family.

Drawn into the conspiracy surrounding Abigail, Nick soon discovers the danger is bigger than he ever believed. Now he must uncover the truth to save her and himself. Gripping and intense, this novel is a twisted thrill ride from best selling author John Rector.

My review: The event that gets this novel rolling is the protagonist’s decision to play along with a seeming come-on from a stranger in a bar. Very quickly, he realizes that what he thought of as an innocent flirtation was actually a meeting to set up a murder. Left holding an envelope with thousands of dollars in payment, along with a photograph of a young woman, he contemplates calling the police. While inexplicably dithering over that decision, the real killer-for-hire arrives, sees Nick, and a discussion with the bartender provides Nick’s name, which means they now know who he is.

That in itself is a neat idea for the start of a mystery. On the other hand, it never quite rang true, nor did most of the storyline. Maybe it was my frame of mind at the time I read this book, maybe it was an unwillingness to suspend disbelief – but I couldn’t quite go there.

Rector has included an interesting  thread in the novel that veers into the laboratory, taking us into science-fiction territory. But the problem here is one that I found throughout the novel – not enough time was spent in fleshing out the plot points, in creating a fully realized world in which each new twist or turn made a sort of sense. Even if the ideas are fantastical, I’ll go along with them if they are supported by the writing. I couldn’t do that in this case.

I also found it very hard to identify with the protagonist because he just wasn’t written with enough depth, which left me feeling less than engaged.

Maybe a beach read? It moves quickly, skimming the surface, and doesn’t require a lot of commitment on the part of the reader. Rector is a popular author and this is my first encounter with his writing. However, this particular thriller just wasn’t my cup of tea.

About the author: John Rector is the Wall Street Journal best-selling author of The Grove, The Cold Kiss, Already Gone, and Out of the Black. His short fiction has appeared in numerous magazines and has won several awards including the International Thriller Award for his novella, Lost Things. Many of his other stories can be found in his collection, The Walls Around Us.

He lives in Omaha, Nebraska.

One of you will be the winner of a copy of Ruthless. Just leave a comment on this post, and I’ll pick a winner on Sunday.

Happy Thursday.

Birthday Boy

June 24, 2015 at 10:00 am by Claudia

Missing. Missing that little girl, who somehow managed to get in the bathroom and close the door while Don was out of the house for a couple of hours yesterday. The poor thing was trapped in there! I just want to cuddle her and tell her everything is okay. She’s had a rough time of it lately. But her dad is doing that rather nicely and for that I am very grateful.

Speaking of her dad, it’s his birthday today. And once again, I am away from home, darn it! It’s a Beatles-song-title-birthday, if you get my drift.

Regular readers will already know quite a bit about Don. If you’re new, just trust me on this one: he’s the best man I know. Little did I know on the day we met (July 4th – I’ll be gone for that important date, too) that my world had changed forever.  We’ve been together almost 21 years and I am profoundly grateful for every moment of our relationship.

Actor, singer, songwriter, writer are the words I would use in a CV or on a website. Compassionate, kind, hysterically funny, smart, whimsical, loving, honest, true blue, dependable, accepting, tolerant, dear, sweet, expert back-rubber, creative cook, supportive, impulsive, fun – are some of the words I would use to paint a picture of the man I love.

He’s the best, you know. I hit the jackpot on the day we met. Forever grateful. Forever committed to him. Forever in love.

Happy Birthday, dearest. We’ll celebrate when I get home.

By the way, I posted mid-day yesterday and you might have missed it. The post is entitled, Self-Care: Maintaining Balance. Please take a moment to read it and leave a comment. You might end up being the winner of a $100 Visa Gift Card!

I have a book review scheduled for tomorrow and then I’ll get back to photos of Chautauqua.

Happy Wednesday. Happy Birthday, Don!

Self-Care: Maintaining Balance

June 23, 2015 at 3:15 pm by Claudia

6-8 whiteroses
As I traverse this part of my life, I’ve learned that I need to do whatever I can to take care of myself.  To be in balance, both in my body and my life. Self-care. For me that means several things. First and foremost, I eat a vegetarian diet and have done so for over thirty years. Whole foods and a plant-based diet – grains, legumes, soy, fruits, and vegetables – make up my daily food intake. I feel healthier when I eat this way. I feel stronger.

But sometimes I overindulge in sugar. I’ve done that a lot this year. When that happens an imbalance occurs. I gain weight. I feel less than vigorous. I start to see the tell-tale signs that I’ve overdone it. So, I have to get things back in balance. I’ve recently started to eliminate sugar once again.

The same goes for sleep. One of the ways in which I take care of myself is to keep to a regular sleep schedule. I know that I need to be in bed reading a good book by about 10:30 at the latest. I wake up around 6 am, every day. If that schedule is disrupted, which – let’s face it – is going to happen occasionally, my balance is off. I have to correct, to find my balance again.

Self-care is something we all do, whether it has to do with diet, with exercise, with sleep, or with any imbalance in our bodies and our spirits. Fresh air, exercise, a positive attitude, a sense of abundance and thankfulness – all of these things go into creating a balance for ourselves. If basic needs aren’t met or if stress and crazily busy schedules take over our lives, we’re going to need to correct at some point. Just as the pilot of a plane or a boat that has gone off course needs to correct and get back on course.

Sleep. Exercise. Meditation/Mindfulness. Diet. Taking time for oneself. All of those things will contribute to feeling rested, fresh and balanced.

I used to, and still do at times, suffer from yeast infections. I can’t think of a woman I know that hasn’t suffered from that at one time or another. Yeast infections = a body out of balance. I’ve used Monistat® for yeast infections more times than I can count.

And, like every woman out there, I want to feel fresh. I look for products that maintain a feeling of freshness, that eliminate odor. Monistat® to the rescue. They now have a Complete Care™ line, which includes Stay Fresh Gel from Monistat® Complete Care™, a product that helps eliminate feminine odor and restore feminine freshness for three days. It helps maintain vaginal pH, and it’s fragrance and paraben-free.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
