Just Hangin’

May 22, 2018 at 8:45 am by Claudia

We are tuckered out here at the cottage; so much so, that we decided to take a raincheck on dinner with Rick and Doug last night. Don just needs to rest. (So do I.)

So we’ve been taking it relatively easy, except for installing three window air conditioners, going on a walk with Sam, running to the grocery store and sitting on the porch. Today is a cloudy day and I know that rain is in the forecast, so we’ll hang out here.

Sam likes to carry a stick on his walk.

This one may be his biggest yet. To his credit, he carried it for quite a long stretch, mindless of how the stick was hitting my legs. It was so impressive!

Sam and Don got to bond again, as it’s been a while since they’ve seen each other.

He’s such a great dog.

We watched the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony last night on HBO On Demand. As always, we learn so much about the honorees. But my favorites were the Moody Blues. Nights in White Satin  was the soundtrack for my life in a college dorm in the early seventies. We had Christmas lights hung around the room. We’d shut the main lights off while keeping the twinkle lights on, light a candle, and listen to the album. Over and over. Hearing them sing it again was great.

More Bridal Veil Spirea. Thanks to the previous owners of this cottage for planting this bush.

It’s been great just being together on this mini-break for Don. Being apart as much as we’ve been over the past year and a half has not been easy.

Don got one whiff of the lilacs before they disappear. The pummeling they’ve received from two huge storms has not been kind to them.

Happy Tuesday.

Flowers and Bunnies

May 21, 2018 at 8:46 am by Claudia

The bridal veil spirea is in full bloom and it’s glorious.

Don’s home. I picked him up at the bus station around 7:30, so it was still light enough for him to see all the green and the gardens. While I made dinner, he sat out on the porch. And this morning, we started off the day with our first cup of coffee and some time on the glider.

It couldn’t be a lovelier day. Perfect weather. Tomorrow? Rain. But at least he’s going to get one day of warmth and blue skies.

Before I went to get Don, I watched two bunnies outside the living room window. One was clearly older, perhaps the mom, and the other, while not a baby, was young enough that it stuck very close to mom’s side.

Mom – or elder brother/sister  – was eating dandelions. The youngster stayed in that still, waiting position until the other rabbit moved. Then the youngster immediately followed.

A closeup of youngster.

Eventually, mom/elder sibling took a rest and the baby waited.

I left the room for a while and came back to three of them! The two youngest were chasing each other.

I also saw Henry, who was (tsk! tsk!) walking into the big garden bed. Knowing the timidity of groundhogs, I simply opened the screen door and he took off. Henry, I have lately discovered, is gray around his muzzle, so that’s how I now know if the groundhog I’m seeing is him.

I have to go to Rick and Doug’s later to walk Sam as they’re going to be gone most of the day. But they’ll be back in time for dinner – with us – so that will be fun. But first, we have to put in the air conditioners!

Happy Monday.

Sunday Morning

May 20, 2018 at 9:22 am by Claudia

The sun is trying to make an appearance after yesterday’s all-day-long rain. I’m hoping it meets with success. We could use some sun around here, if only to dry up the soggy grass.

I’m having a slow morning, but there are chores that need doing; cleaning bathrooms, washing sheets. That will keep me busy until Don arrives later this evening.

Yay!

Meanwhile, here are some photos I took on Friday.

The forget-me-nots that I planted in the memorial garden from seed a couple of years ago have really taken off this year. And when I say ‘taken off’ I mean that they are now on the other side of the fence as well.

They’re sturdy and dependable.

The chokecherry is back at the base of the maple.

The lavender is budding.

It’s so green everywhere!

The morning glory, zinnia and moonflower seeds sprouted very quickly this year.

I think Don will get at least one sunny day while he’s here. Tuesday looks questionable. Fingers crossed!

Happy Sunday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
