Miracles in the Garden

April 16, 2017 at 10:37 am by Claudia

Whatever you are celebrating today, I send you my best wishes for a happy and joyous day.

Here in my neck of the woods, the temperature is going to reach 81 degrees and then, as is the case in the Spring, it will drop back down to a more moderate temperature tomorrow.

My beautiful lilacs are coming along nicely. I took this a couple of days ago, so I’ll have to do an update later today.

This is the season of miracles. Plants that were thought lost are back again. Old reliable friends have spread their beauty into other parts of the garden. We’ve made it through a month in which there were balmy days and then suddenly, snow and frigid temperatures. Still  they survive. And thrive. Amazing and truly wondrous.

Back after taking a year off:

These beauties. In a garden filled with green and brown, this splash of vivid purple makes me smile.

Yesterday I took a little ride and then came home and decided to mow the area of the lawn that is on the house side of the driveway. Since we’re on a slope, rain water flows down the slope and portions of the lawn grow very quickly and densely. In April and May, we usually have to stop the lawnmower and clear out clogged grass, then start it again and this can go on and on. Since I’m handling this on my own, I decided to mow early and often. As I opened the shed to get the lawn mower, I noticed the bins holding the air conditioners had fallen forward (they’re fine) onto the snowblower.

Crap. I knew I would have to move them, as I didn’t want any damage to occur to the snowblower. I moved the lawnmower out of the shed and lifted each bin off the pile and down to the floor of the shed. But that left no room for the lawnmower. Since I wasn’t sure how to reconfigure the shed contents on my own, I took two of the bins outside the shed. Then I wheeled the lawnmower down toward the lawn and mowed. That in itself was tiring. When I finished, I looked at those bins and figured I might as well drag them toward the house – which I did – and move them inside.

And then, despite what I knew Don would say, I proceeded to install the kitchen a/c unit. It’s the heaviest and most awkward of the units and it wasn’t easy. Lots of heavy lifting. At one point in the middle of the process, guess who called? Yep. I fessed up immediately, explaining that I had no idea where to put them after I’d had to haul them out of the shed. He wasn’t happy, but he understood.

Then I moved the bedroom unit up the stairs one at a time, by pushing it up onto each step. Once I got it upstairs, I could easily move it into the bedroom. This one is the scariest for me to do on my own because I’m so afraid that I’m going to drop it and it will crash to the ground. In the middle of the whole thing I almost gave up. But I somehow managed it and it’s a done deal.

There’s still the unit for the office to install but that can wait.

I was really, really exhausted at the end of the day. A nice hot bath helped.

So, I’m taking it easy today. Really, really easy.

Enjoy your day, friends.

Happy Sunday.

Spring: Fabric Eggs, Doves, Nancy Drew & Bunnies

April 15, 2017 at 9:36 am by Claudia

As sleep deprived as I was yesterday, I managed to put in a couple of hours work outside. The annual “raking of the driveway gravel which has ended up on the lawn back to the driveway” event took place and I must say it was far less involved than last year. I’m not sure why, because we sure got a heck of a lot of snow and Don was definitely using the snowblower. Oh wait, I know why: we have hardly any gravel left.

Someday, someday, we want to pave the driveway. But that is really expensive.

I raked out the front garden bed – where the boxwood and some rose bushes reside. And I cut back some of the plant stems that were left in place for the birds to munch on over the winter. Then I went back into the house and slept for a half hour while sitting in the chair in the office.

The grasses in the garden are growing by leaps and bounds!

The mail brought two packages I had been waiting for:

The Clue in the Jewel Box – Nancy Drew #20 – not my twentieth Nancy Drew, but number twenty in the series.

And these adorables:

Spun cotton bunny rabbits from Vintage by Crystal – the link to her Etsy shop is here. She has a huge following, but I must have been in some sort of fog because the first I learned of her was last week when Mary Engelbreit posted a couple of Crystal’s creations on Instagram. Off I hopped to the Etsy shop, where I was promptly lost in a land of pure whimsical delight. I see many more of her creations in my future because you know, dear readers, this kind of whimsey is right up my alley. And they’re small – these are about 4 inches tall. Perfect for a collector in a small cottage.

After this photo op, I moved them – temporarily – to the sideboard.

If you’ve been reading this blog for a long time, you might remember that my mom called me her “pink bunny” when I was a little girl. So, I had to buy the pink bunny and a companion, as well. (I have another wee pink bunny in the office.)

Then later in the day, I remembered my fabric eggs, which are usually stowed in the china cabinet in the den.

I made a slew of these – gosh, I think it was 8 years ago – when I was working in San Diego for six months. An old friend, who is a costume designer, loaned me her vintage Singer Featherweight while I was there and I proceeded to piece a quilt and make these. (Thanks, Ingrid! That loaner inspired me to buy my very own Featherweight several years later.)

One of the things I am going to do when I’m out in CA is visit my favorite quilt shop ever – Rosie’s Calico Cupboard. That’s where I got this fabric.

Even later in the day, I saw my favorite pair of birds.

While they were perched on the edge of the birdbath, a blue jay kept squawking at them. I’m sure he wanted them to move so he could have a drink.

They completely ignored him. Bravo!

Eventually, one jumped down to the ground and the other prepared to follow.

And then, to their perch on a catalpa branch.

They stayed there, gentle and peaceful, for about an hour.

This morning, birds were everywhere: Canada Geese flying overhead, red house finches, robins, wrens, a starling with the makings of a nest in his/her beak.

Goodness, I love this time of year.

I’m off to gather together the trash and recyclables for a trip to the town transfer station. And then, I think, a visit to a plant nursery that I like over in Rhinebeck.

Happy Saturday.

Impressions, Pie, Bunnies of the Knitted Variety & Sleeplessness

April 14, 2017 at 7:59 am by Claudia

I can’t be the only person who is having trouble sleeping, right? Amidst the joys of spring, we have the threat of nuclear winter, with two unstable leaders rattling their sabres. I woke up at 4 am today and got up to use the bathroom. That did it. I couldn’t turn my thoughts off and I finally gave up and got up around 4:45.

Insanity. With billions of lives in the balance. The FBI is coming for you and your henchmen no matter what you do, so why don’t you spare us this ongoing fear and resign? That will give you time to prep for prison. Orange is the new black and all that sort of thing.

Okay. Enough of that and on to happier things.

Some shots of the house because Spring brings out my nester instincts and I look at the house with fresh eyes. All done with the iPhone because I was lazy at that moment. We’ll call the photos “Impressions.”

Those of you who follow along on Instagram already know this story, but for those of you who don’t, here it is. Yesterday morning, Fed Ex pulled up in our driveway. Since I wasn’t expecting anything, I was surprised. The Fed Ex guy was carrying a largish box and handed it to me. It was from the Julian Pie Company in Julian, CA. Oh my goodness. Julian apple pies are the best apple pies I have ever tasted and I knew immediately who was behind this surprise.

Sure enough, the message inside said “Sweets for the Sweet, love Don.” That stinker stopped by Julian on his way home from the desert last Monday and arranged to have a pie shipped to me. We used to treat ourselves to a Julian Pie quite often when we lived in San Diego.

Isn’t he the best?

I managed to wait until late afternoon until I cut a slice and then I happily indulged in the taste sensation of a Julian apple pie.

Best crust ever.

Sigh of happiness.

And, though I haven’t knitted in years, I started in on this little project:

We’ll see if it looks remotely presentable once I have finished. If you don’t see a picture, well, you’ll know.

Pie for breakfast.

Happy Friday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
