Friday Thoughts

March 29, 2019 at 10:03 am by Claudia

Can you tell I’m enamored of this combination of yellow Fiesta and yellow/orange tulips?

They were made for each other.

I pulled out my big girl camera yesterday and started shooting closeups of the flowers that are scattered around the house. A sure sign that it’s spring. I’ve been using my iPhone almost exclusively during the winter months because it was easier to grab on the fly. But now that things are blooming and/or starting to grow outside, the big girl camera will be used much more often.

It’s rainy today. Not a lot of rain, more like a very light rain. I’ve been watching all the birds gather in our back yard. Robins, at least three blue jays, little sparrows…everyone taking advantage of damp earth and more readily available food.

I saw Henry yesterday! He made it through another winter. I can always tell it’s Henry because he’s large and overweight and moves more slowly than the other groundhogs. And he was eating on the grass where he always dines. I snapped some pictures but I was using the iPhone and he was far away, so they’re too grainy. But it was our old friend Henry. I’m glad.

That Sleepy egg cup? I’m not sure where the seller is getting his information, but the price seems to be based on the prices some of the egg cups went for pre-eBay. We’re talking at least 20 years ago. In those days, they were very hard to find, so they were more desirable, and priced accordingly. I have a friend who has a vast egg cup collection and he has the entire set of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. He bought them long ago and paid a lot of money for them. He has no regrets – it’s always about the thrill of the hunt. But he never paid that much. Almost four hundred dollars? Not hardly. I’m going to send him a screenshot of the auction to get his reaction.

I’m not sure what’s on the docket for today. We did take our first trail walk yesterday and it felt really good. We stopped by the paddock where Ashley and Pliers used to live and said a few words in their memory.

Happy Friday.

Egg Cups, Some Clarification & A Video

March 22, 2019 at 11:18 am by Claudia

Some egg cups that are either too tall or too wide for the cubby. It’s so hard to get a good shot of this, as it’s in the corner of the den right next to the sofa and there’s no way to get a full on shot.

The egg cup gentleman is quite tall. The head is removable and the egg sits where his egg-head normally sits. It’s meant to be part of a set, and the heads are meant to be salt and pepper shakers, but mine has no holes, so go figure! Next to him is a red transferware egg cup. There’s a little egg held by a little clown on the second shelf. I have a feeling it’s not an egg cup, but a toothpick holder, but the clown is holding an egg, so I include it in my collection. The goose egg cup is lovely and it’s from France. Humpty Dumpty is from England. The wooden man and woman egg cups were a gift from a reader of this blog. The eggs are salt and pepper shakers. I bought the glass egg cup just this year because I loved the orange coloring. And the little wooden mama and baby ducks were found a few years back in an antique shop. I really love them. Everything is vintage, including the shelf.

I want to address something today – I want to be clear about the former owner of Ashley and Pliers. He’s a very nice man. We know him. He spent his life with horses, working as a farrier. He raised Ashley and Pliers and loved them dearly. Any neglect was not intentional, rather a result of diminished capacity. – both mental and physical. Horses are expensive. I don’t think he could afford repairs to their paddock. It got very muddy there after rains and the ground was unsafe for these now elderly horses. He did the best he could. But it got out of hand. He was encouraged to surrender the horses more than once, but always declined because he loved them and didn’t want to give them up. Those of us who knew them from walking the trail were concerned. The owner of a boarding facility that bordered the trail was concerned. Winter was coming and there was no way they would survive the cold without adequate shelter. And their wooden shelter was falling apart and far from adequate. To make a long story short, when things finally reached a tipping point with Ashley falling more frequently and both of the horses in danger, the owner knew it was time and was persuaded to surrender them. The boarding facility took them in until the Catskill Animal Sanctuary took over. And when it came time to load them into the horse trailers for their journey to CAS, the owner – as painful as it must have been for him – guided them into the trailer.

It’s a heartbreaking story with a happy ending. They got to live out their lives with food and shelter and a safe environment.

I want to remind you: this same gentleman lost his home to a fire not long after losing his babies. He had nothing – he managed to save his cat, but everything else was gone. He was a longtime resident of our community and many of us contributed to a Go Fund Me appeal to raise money for a new home for him. He now lives in a manufactured home on his property, funded by generous donations. He’s been through a lot.

Changing the subject: I want to point you in the direction of a video. Don brought it to my attention yesterday morning and, I have to say, the ideas discussed here make the most sense of any I have heard on the subject of fixing our broken democracy. You might find it quite compelling. For the first time, I feel there just might be a way to work around the corporate money and corruption that fuels many of the decisions made by Congress. It will make more sense if you watch it. The actress Jennifer Lawrence and the Director of RepresentUs, Josh Silver, narrate. It’s smart. It makes sense.

If you’re so inclined, here’s the link.

Still raining here. But it’s nothing, considering what is facing so many in the Midwest. I’ve watched video of the flooded rivers and towns and farms and my heart breaks for everyone impacted by this deluge.

Happy Friday.

The Daily Routine & Some Sad News

March 21, 2019 at 11:09 am by Claudia

Such a beautiful sunny day yesterday! Today? Rain. Tomorrow? Rain. But I don’t mind. We need rain in order for the grass to get green, for plants to grow, for trees to bud. I’m just happy to see all of the snow gone!

I spent a few hours working on the dollhouse yesterday, doing the tedious work of getting rid of all the excess glue. Applying heat – in my case, with a hairdryer – softens the glue. But getting it out of there involves scraping or using your fingernails, which is what I did. My sore fingers this morning indicate that I did a lot of that. But huzzah! I’m done!

There’s still some excess glue around the windows, but that will be fairly easy to deal with. Next up: my plan for the exterior. And that, if I do it right, is going to take a long time.

I want to share two things with you today.

Those of you who have been reading this blog for a while remember the story of Ashley and Pliers, the two horses that we fed every day on our trail walk. Ashley was the mother and Pliers the son. They were devoted to each other, but they lived in a muddy field and their owner was no longer capable of caring for them. They were in their thirties and Ashley was blind. Sometime she would fall and Pliers would stand guard over her. And Pliers wouldn’t let anyone get near her. He never left her side.

Some good neighbors intervened and temporarily housed them until the wonderful Catskill Animal Sanctuary took them in. That was 29 months ago. If they hadn’t taken them in, both horses would have died.

Today, on Instagram, there was a post from Catskill Animal Sanctuary:

“When 35-year-old blind Ashley, terrified of humans, and her 33-year-old son arrived here in October of 2016, we thought they had just weeks to live; they were dangerously attached to each other and had myriad health problems. In fact, Ashley’s back end gave out when she walked. But expert and exhaustive care (even helping them up when they couldn’t stand), exercise, and an abundance of love, likely gave them the best 29 months of their long lives. With their health rapidly declining and falls more frequent, it was time for our final act of love. Goodbye, teachers. Goodbye, old friends. Goodbye, Ashley and Pliers. You are forever in our hearts.”

My heart is breaking.

But without the Sanctuary, they would have been gone much sooner. Everyone at the Sanctuary lavished their time and care on them. Pliers began to feel less need to protect Ashley. He felt comfortable leaving her to come to the fence or for training. Ashley was tended by volunteers who were experienced in working with blind horses. The quality of life for both of them improved greatly.

I’m very sad. It’s hard to grasp that they are gone. But they went together and I know that it would have been impossible for either of them to continue without the other.

Farewell, Ashley and Pliers. You were loved by many.

You know what? That’s enough for today. I’ll save the other ‘share’ for tomorrow.

Let’s leave this post with a photo of these two beautiful souls.

Ashley.

Pliers.

Rest in Peace, my friends.

Happy Thursday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
