The Autumn Garden, Reading & Baseball

October 18, 2013 at 9:32 am by Claudia

Now the catalpa has begun dropping its big, heart-shaped leaves. It’s usually the last holdout here at the cottage. The weather has been warm, sunny and generally lovely. But last night we got some rain and those who are in the know say we will now be having much cooler temperatures. Ever watchful, I check the predicted low temperature every day. My goal is to hang on to all my plants as long as possible. I do this little dance every autumn. If there’s a danger of frost, I go into a flurry of activity, bringing plants in from the porch for the night, covering those plants in the ground that are still blooming. I’ve already discussed my ‘Plan’ with Don to cover the Chicken Wire Fence Garden and keep it going as long as possible.

I fight the good fight – never wanting to give in and say ‘uncle’ until the last possible moment.

Yesterday, on a beautifully warm and sun-filled day, we sat for a spell out on the Funky Patio. I grabbed the chair that gave me a prime view of the Chicken Wire Fence Garden. It’s full of blooms; with morning glories and zinnias in colorful profusion. Big fat bumble bees hovered over the galvanized planter, circled around the geraniums and gomphrena. Scout lapped up the sun.

I remarked to Don that it’s a good thing I planted a later-blooming garden because it not only gives us pleasure, it provides much needed sustenance for bees and butterflies. There’s a heck of a lot of activity around these flowers. I’ve been watching bees dive down into the very center of morning glory blossoms, disappearing for a while, then reemerging to continue the search for another snack.

If I wanted, I could move a chair smack dab in front of the Chicken Wire Fence Garden, watch all the activity and be entertained for hours. Maybe I will.

These are all current photos, by the way. This is how the garden looks at this point in time. There are a few blooms in the garden beds; the limelight hydrangea, some roses and some cosmos are still hanging in there. The sedum is wearing its autumn colors. But this little garden is the star of the show. It’s the grand finale.

I’ve finished Bury Your Dead by Louise Penny and have moved on to A Trick of the Light, the next in the series. Only two more to go after that and then I will have to join all the other fans who found her long before I did and wait until the next book is published. Sigh.

I’m on the waiting list at the library for the newest Lee Child (there are a lot of people ahead of me,) Daniel Silva (a lot of people ahead of me) and Deborah Crombie (first in the queue.) In the meantime, I have review books to read, as well. Don’t forget: I have a book giveaway going on at the moment. Scroll down for the review and leave a comment if you are interested.

We’ve been watching the Red Sox battle the Tigers. Draining. Exhausting. Tension-filled. Both teams are so evenly matched that it truly is a battle. Sometimes I have to cover my eyes or leave the room because I need a break from all the anxiety that accompanies these games. Last night I walked away for a bit and did the dishes, occasionally calling out to Don, “What’s happening??” Today is a travel day so we get a breather, then tomorrow we are right back at it.

I love October baseball.

Happy Friday.

An Aversion to Chevrons & a Love for Baseball

October 24, 2012 at 10:01 am by Claudia

This just about sums up life around here lately. We love baseball. The two teams I cheered for, the Tigers and the Giants, are going to be in the World Series. Huzzah! But now…who to root for? I was born in Detroit. So, that means the Tigers, right? But I love, love the Giants. They are fun and scrappy and slightly eccentric and have a lot of heart. But I was born in Detroit. A quandary. Don is wholeheartedly for the Giants. I’m not sure how it’s going to play out.

Last night, when there wasn’t a game to watch and the usual junk was on television, Don and I spent the evening playing Scrabble on my iPhone. It was neck-and-neck for a while there, but I ended up beating him by 3 points.

The crochet speaks for itself. I’m crocheting for the shop and that little exercise is ongoing. The photo is slightly grainy because we have more rain and gray skies and I am getting so sick of it I could scream.

As I tool around the many wonderful blogs in Blogland, I have to say this: If the design powers-that-be decided that chevrons in any shape or form were to be outlawed, I would be very happy. My eyes are glazing over. I’m over them. Not that I was ever a fan, really. I’ve never like that particular kind of geometric design, which may be why, when I was much younger and doing needlepoint, I never went for bargello, which is another form of a chevron. Or why I have never been a fan of Missoni prints. I’m sure someone will be offended by this, but don’t be. It’s just my personal taste, or lack thereof. I don’t like chevron anything and since it is definitely the hot look out there, I run the risk of encountering it countless times in the course of a day while cruising the internet.

Now someone who loves chevrons would probably look at my mix of checks and flower prints and cozy Christmas in Connecticut style and run screaming from the room. They would have every right to. I get it. Personal taste is a funny thing. Why do I have such a strong reaction to chevron anything? I don’t know, really, I just know I do.

I will be a happy camper when this trend runs out of gas.

And to assure you that I did do something about yesterday’s mess:

(Again: rainy, gray, lamp is on, sorry.)

See? I actually sorted through piles, threw things out and found other places to put some of this stuff that made a sort of sense.

And, to close:

By the way, I’m guest posting over at Cozy Inspiration today,

Happy Wednesday.

I’m Stuck Here, So I’m Rambling

October 26, 2010 at 9:57 am by Claudia

A different view this morning. (Note painting by door that gets crooked every time we go in and out. Annoying.) Normally I’m ensconced in my chair in the den. However, that chair is not good for my back in its current condition. So the laptop, camera and heating pad have moved to a new location in the living room. I’m sorry to say that my aching back is still aching. Thanks for all your advice. In case you’re thinking that I clean the siding on my house on a regular basis, let me assure you, I don’t. The side of the house where I was merrily cleaning away gets that green, mildewy stuff occasionally, especially after lots of rain. I ignored it for a long time (2 years) and that is why I was wielding a brush the other day. And the cleaning didn’t injure me…not looking where I was going was the culprit.

Okay, since I’m stuck here, I submit some rambling thoughts for your reading pleasure:

::  If my beloved Red Sox couldn’t do it, the two teams I wanted to see in the World Series are in. Love the Rangers and the Giants. Mostly, I love that two scrappy teams beat the big guys. They play with such heart! Can’t wait for the series to begin on Wednesday. I might be watching it from the floor, but I’ll be there.

:: In the “Drives Me Crazy” category: the misuse everywhere of the word literal or  literally.  I hear it all the time: “I literally died laughing.” “We were literally sweating bullets.” No…you weren’t. Otherwise, we would be mourning your death or watching bullets pop out of your body.

I hate it when a word gets twisted into a casual, less-than form of what it was (i.e., ‘awesome’ – that’s another post entirely.) The latest example? A commercial for Dodge Minivans that has the tag line (I paraphrase): “…this minivan literally gave birth to all other minivans.” Really? That would have been a sight to see.  And this misuse was okayed by an ad agency. Someone actually signed off on the copy. Yes, I know that language changes, but it shouldn’t be cheapened for a lazy writer’s ad copy. Each of the sentences I referred to would be just as effective without the insertion of ‘literally.’

:: The kids have new clothes:

Scout obviously didn’t want this picture taken. Note slightly pissed off facial expression.

The ever-elusive Riley. Any photo of him requires some sort of sneak attack.
:: When I said there were no orange pumpkins here at MHC, I was sadly mistaken. What was I thinking?

After the dogs reminded me about the dollhouse porch, I was shamed into taking a photo of the pretty display of lovely pumpkins – orange pumpkins.

:: I forgot how much I like crocheting. I’ve started a throw for the den and now that I’ve memorized the pattern, it flows and an almost-meditative feeling comes over me.

:: My Mom is scheduled to go home this Thursday. We don’t know how that is going to work out, as she is not really any better. There will be someone to help out a few hours a day. My Dad desperately wants it to work, but he’s 87 and this is enormously stressful for both of them. I’ll write more when I  know more.

:: Last but certainly not least, I had to share this photo with you. It’s my husband as young boy playing the steel guitar in his godfather’s Polynesian band.

He was 11. I can’t even begin to tell you how cute I think this is: the Hawaiian shirt, his sweet face, the look of concentration, the retro starburst clock. Oh, and his haircut. I just want to squeeze him.

Have a lovely day, my friends.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
