Patience and Balance

April 3, 2018 at 10:46 am by Claudia

I’m currently reading this book.

That’s a big deal to me, since I haven’t been able to concentrate on any reading other than short magazine articles. Books? No. And this is a memoir, not something I usually read. But fiction seems to be a problem at present, so I thought I’d try this and I’m 2/3 of the way through it.

What a relief! The very fact that I’m reading anything of some length is a comfort.

I wanted to buy this when it was in hardcover, but I didn’t. When I was at Three Lives and Co. bookstore in Greenwich Village a month or so ago, I saw it in paperback and I grabbed it. Robert Gottlieb is probably the most famous book editor of the past 50 or so years. He worked at Simon & Shuster, Knopf, and also edited the New Yorker. Well into his eighties, he still  edits. This is such a fascinating read. It’s chatty; you can imagine yourself sitting with Gottlieb in his study while he regales you with stories about his career and the authors he worked with. Such a pleasure to read. Since I’m drawn to books about books and bookstores and reading, this is right up my alley.

It’s part of the ongoing battle I’m waging with the need to be informed, to stay in activist mode, balanced with allotting myself only so much time with twitter, etc. Reading, projects, soon, hopefully, the garden, listening to music that makes me happy – all of that helps.

Of course, yesterday’s snow managed to disappear in record time and Don and I were left feeling sad that we didn’t go for it in terms of travel. But hindsight is always 20/20 and we had to make the call right in the middle of a heavy snowfall. It is what it is.

Spotted in my peperomia: two more white flower stalks coming up from the soil. Hurrah!

It’s a gray and rainy day today. Dang, I wish spring would make a spectacular appearance! I know the birds are back, I hear the peepers at night, the daffs are coming out of the ground. The temperatures, however, are on the cold side today. I just have to be patient and know that in a couple of weeks, winter will be long gone and we’ll be well and truly into spring.

Happy Tuesday.

A Start

February 4, 2018 at 9:37 am by Claudia

I’m writing this rather quickly, as I slept in and I have to make my way to Rick and Doug’s home for brunch. Doug’s daughter is in town and I look forward to seeing her again. Should be lovely.

Thank you for all your wonderful comments yesterday, along with some great advice. We’re all dealing with this, aren’t we? Don says it’s all about balance and he’s right. I managed to do pretty well yesterday, though there were a few slip ups here and there. I had several errands to run, as well as laundry and vacuuming, but I did  start my book! Huzzah!

I can already tell I’m going to like it. It came out a few years ago and was on a lot of the Best Books of the Year lists. If I had to compare it to another book – and it’s early in the game – I’d compare it to All the Light We Cannot See. It’s called A Constellation of Vital Phenomena  and is written by Anthony Marra. I’ll share more of my thoughts when I’ve finished.

The sun in the photos is courtesy of yesterday. Today is gray, with rain and snow in the forecast.

Sigh of spring-yearning.

I just might paint that kitchen wall this coming week, since I’m stuck here because of the cold temperatures.

Happy Sunday.

A Cold Saturday

January 6, 2018 at 10:29 am by Claudia

Don’t ask how cold it is here. Just don’t ask. I feel like I should be wearing fingerless gloves at the moment. I know I have a pair somewhere. Since tomorrow morning will be even colder, I’ll have to find them.

Don and I feel like we’re trapped in a research station in Antarctica. Or a biosphere.

I did manage to escape for a few hours yesterday and drove to the bookstore. But along the way, my tire pressure warning light went on, so yours truly was out there in below zero wind chills trying to add enough air to my rear tires so the warning light would go out. It is impossible to do that with gloves on. Trust me. It eventually went off and I spent a bit of time at Barnes & Noble (being taken over more and more by children’s toys and educational items, plus weird Manga stuff.) Somewhere in the midst of all of that, there are still actual books. It’s not my preferred bookstore, but you take what you can get.

A closer view of the flowers on the sansevieria. They are so fragrant! Don loves them.

One of the rubber plant leaves is starting to open. This is my first experience with a rubber plant and its new growth, so I’m enjoying the unveiling.

Thank you houseplants for giving me something to do, to nurture, and to observe during these winter months.

I’m sure you’ve noticed that I haven’t done a book review in a while. As with some other changes, it just seems to be happening naturally at this point in my life. That’s not to say I won’t do more in the future, I’m sure I will, but the sheer amount of deadline-type reading I had to do for the book blog and for the reviews on this blog was too much.

I also think a good book review takes time and care. I see some book ‘reviews’ on blogs that consist of the publisher’s blurb that gives you a hint of the plot, followed by an “I liked it, I loved it, or I didn’t like it” and that’s it. That’s not a review. That’s a thumbs up or down, more suited to Amazon or Goodreads, and it isn’t the way I write/wrote my reviews.

Anyway, I seem to be at a point with this blog, as I’ve said before, where I’m happy with what it is, where I’m not trying to make it into anything other than what it is, and where anything that involves a deadline or trying to make more money off the blog or feels like a drain on my energy is being phased out. And it’s all happening naturally. The only thing I made a conscious decision about was the deletion of my book blog.

I’m coming up on 10 years of blogging on February 17th. Ten years! And I think I’ve distilled the blog down to its essence, which is a good place to be as I prepare to celebrate that ‘birth’ day.

Last night’s sunset.

The view from the kitchen was even more Maxfield Parrish-like:

If we’re going to be in this awful cold, it’s the least that Mother Nature can do for us.

Happy Saturday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
