Sunday Catch-Up

July 9, 2017 at 11:04 am by Claudia

Hello, all!

This is our last day in La Jolla. Tomorrow will be the first day of our journey back home.

We’ve been eating and bookstore-ing and Whole Foods-ing and beach-ing.

Warwick’s has been in existence for decades and I used to visit this store when we lived here. Seeing it with fresh eyes after having been away, I applaud this independent book shop for its well-curated (yes, I’m using that over-used word) selection of books. They have everything here; many of the books would be impossible to find in a chain bookstore. Displayed beautifully, the books are able to show off and beckon you to pick them up and explore the world between the covers. Warwick’s also has a stationary and office supply/gift shop, as well.

But it’s the books I’m interested in.

We bought a Rand McNally road atlas, a map of California, a couple of spiritual books, Noah Hawley’s Before the Fall (for me) and Al Franken’s new book: Al Franken, Giant of the Senate (the title makes me laugh out loud.) That’s for Don, but I’ll read it, as well.

Beach:

Next time, we’re going to kayak.

So frigging beautiful. And the weather has been glorious. Yesterday was the first day I felt any humidity. That is why I couldn’t live in Florida. Too humid.

Ironically, with no more time left to visit the beach, I bought a bathing suit yesterday. Go figure.

While Don was doing a matinee, I walked to a shopping center nearby that has a Marshall’s, DSW shoes, and a World Market. I found two adorable hand towels at World Market for our bathroom, a bathing suit (sort of 40’s retro style) at Marshall’s and these shoes at DSW:

I couldn’t resist them.

As Don gave a ‘Va-va-voom!’ when he saw me in the bathing suit, I guess I made a good choice. Even though I miss my younger, slimmer body, Don loves my curves. Bless him!

Today, I’m going to do our laundry while Don is at the matinee and then I’ll see Escape to Margaritaville  again tonight for the closing performance. Don has had such a terrific time doing this show. He loves  the cast. They are wonderful people who are also a lot of fun. I’m so grateful that he’s had this experience.

We’ve decided to drive up the coast of California to San Francisco, where we’ll catch I-80 and travel through Nevada and Utah and Wyoming and Nebraska and Iowa and Illinois and Indiana, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. We’re really looking forward to the drive up the coast. I did it with my friend Rick when we first moved out here, but that was 24 years ago! Can’t wait to see it with my sweetheart.

Happy Sunday.

Presents, Songbirds, Flowers & Chairs

April 29, 2017 at 7:57 am by Claudia

A presents day yesterday, from others and from me to me/us!

Nancy, who is a longtime reader of this blog, sent me a package full of wonderful treasures. Three more Hardy Boys for Don, a Nancy Drew for me, and two beautiful pieces of miniature pottery. The moon-faced pitcher (Nancy told me to google it for interesting information) looks like it was made by Enesco and was also manufactured in other colors and lustreware finishes. The other piece is a Shawnee miniature.  I love everything.

Thank you so much, Nancy! What a generous gift!

I also received a package from Don. I didn’t take a photo of it because it’s a T-shirt, but it’s from the famous Blue Swallow Motel on Route 66 and it has a great logo. Perfect for this bird-loving girl.

The flowers Don sent me for opening night. The roses have opened and the pale pink peony is about to open. Aren’t they gorgeous?

From me to me: another Nancy Drew. This is one of the later editions illustrated by Russell H. Tandy. We’re getting there – only seven more to go but a few of those are extremely hard to find!

We get a pile of sales circulars in the mail every week and I usually throw them in the recycling pile without even looking at them. This week, for some reason, I looked through them and saw one from The Christmas Tree Shops. I decided to quickly take a look at it – thank goodness I did – and what did I see? Adirondack chairs made out of cedar for $49. What????? Not only that, but they fold up, so we can store them in the shed (if we ever clean it out.)

I drove across the river yesterday and came home with them.

If you’ve read this blog for any length of time, you know I have always, always wanted a couple of Adirondack chairs! I’m so excited! I could paint them, but I think I’ll leave them natural, with the addition of a clear coat. Cedar ages well, and our porch furniture tends to be weathered wood.

They’ll go on the porch. I’m on the hunt for colorful cushions. I haven’t put them together yet. Maybe today, but I also have to mow so we’ll see what happens.

I mowed the back forty yesterday, as well as the corral. Today, the front yard, because it’s due to rain tomorrow.

It’s finally time to soak my morning glory seeds. I’ll be sowing them on Monday, along with zinnia and moonflower seeds. Huzzah! And, I have yet to buy impatiens for the porch or flowers for the planters, but I did move all the plants I overwintered this year back out to the porch.

Spring is here.

I made a cup of coffee this morning and went outside to sit on the funky patio. It was about 6:15 and the air was full of bird song. Glorious. I’m going to do it more often. At that point in the day, traffic is fairly quiet around here and the songbirds can take center stage. It’s a beautiful way to start the day.

Happy Saturday.

Green In the Midst of Brown

April 6, 2017 at 10:05 am by Claudia

We had periods of sun yesterday, which was much appreciated as today and tomorrow are going to be rainy. I grabbed the camera as I went outside to check out the garden beds.

I haven’t done any cleanup as of yet. It’s been too cold, rainy, snowy, windy… you name it. I hope to start in next week. So checking out the beds involves seeing what’s poking through the leaf mulch.

Hyacinths. Last year, they didn’t bloom. Let’s see what happens this year.

The Oriental Poppy never came up last year. I was so delighted to see it once again. I wonder if that had to do with a relatively warm winter in 2016. This year we had a very cold winter, lots of snow…and here it is.

Daylilies.

I also saw sedum and lamium and buds on the lilacs and the beginnings of buds on the trees. I can’t wait to get out there and clear the beds. With such a volatile March and temperatures plunging to below freezing, I left the beds alone and let the leaf mulch stay.

Once I’m really sure it’s okay out there, I’ll move my indoor impatiens back to the porch. But I’m very protective of them, so it will be a while yet.

Changing the subject: Have you heard of Book Depository? It’s an online source out of England and Australia – sort of like Amazon. I’ve known of it a long time, but I have only used it very recently. I’m a fan of Jane Casey’s mysteries and I follow her on Twitter. I noticed that she had a new book in her Maeve Kerrigan series coming out in Britain, so I asked her when it was coming out here. Not until July. The wait seemed intolerable to yours truly. But, through Amazon (a fluke?) I found I could get it through Book Depository. So I did.

Just the other day, after having read lots of tweets about the new John Connolly being released this week in England, I checked out Amazon. Only pre-order – It’s not coming out here for several months. And there was no option for Book Depository. So I went directly to the Book Depository site and there it was. I ordered it and…they don’t charge for shipping! Less expensive than Amazon! It will be here in about a week. This may not be for everyone but for someone like me who reads books by several authors on the other side of the pond, this eliminates that pesky wait for the U.S. release of a book.

Egg cups for your viewing pleasure. They’re all favorites, but I especially love the one on the left. Oh wait, I also love the Scottie and the two dogs holding up the egg cup and the rabbit  and the pig and the chicks. This is my problem. I love them all, especially the figurals – that’s what this type of egg cup is.

Happy Thursday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
