Thoughts on Saturday

November 19, 2016 at 9:07 am by Claudia

It’s one of those days where I want to block out all sound. Since early this morning I’ve heard the sound of rifles. It’s hunting season. You know how I feel about that, so I won’t go into it here. Suffice to say, I keep chanting, “Miss! Miss!” and silently willing the deer to take cover.

I’m heading more and more into veganism. I’m not quite there yet. But I’m eliminating butter and cheese as much as possible, as well as eggs. I’m not perfect; I have leather shoes and leather bags, but as I move forward, I am going to try to make better, more humane choices.

From our walk yesterday:

The building on the left is part of a rather well-known company that has its headquarters in our little town. They make natural products; makeup, soap, cleansers, etc.

It’s November 19th. Time to remove our window air conditioners, don’t you think? Yikes. We seem to do this later and later every year. But today is the day. And tomorrow night the temperatures are going to plunge at night and stay there consistently throughout the next week, so I’m bracing myself to say sayonara to my porch plants. Sigh. It really is the end of the season here at the cottage.

A month from today we start rehearsals for Comedy of Errors. Suddenly, I’m aware of all I have to do before the 18th, when I will travel to Hartford. Since I have been either stressed or down and somewhat unmotivated for the past couple of months, I guess I needed something to kick me in the tush, and this is it. We had planned on traveling down to Florida for a visit, first in October, then we pushed it back to around Thanksgiving. But, after much discussion, we made the decision this week not to go. It just seemed to be too much for us at the present time and my gut was telling me it wasn’t the right time to travel. So we’ll go sometime after the first of the year. Meredith was disappointed, I know, as are we. But I know we made the right decision, hard as it was.

Barbara sent me a birthday card and this was enclosed:

A mini Nancy Drew mystery! The Hidden Staircase, with a Russell H. Tandy cover. Let’s get a closer look:

I love it. Thank you, Barbara! Yesterday, I found it on this chair, which sits in the living room of Hummingbird Cottage. Obviously, Caroline has been enjoying some vintage Nancy Drew! (Have you noticed we have a lot in common?)

Happy Saturday.

Reading As Escape

November 16, 2016 at 9:27 am by Claudia

11-16-moonrising

I try to get good photos of the moon. I do.

But I don’t have the right kind of lens, don’t have a stretch of level ground on which to plant a tripod, and it gets so dark around here that the ‘night’ setting on my camera really doesn’t do it. Ah, well.

Yesterday was a rain-filled day and it wasn’t the drizzly kind of rain we’ve been getting, but a very good soaking rain. It was dismal out there, but much appreciated. I drove to the bookstore for reading therapy. Though I am vigilant and am doing everything I can right now to stay energized for the fight, I also need to escape, always hoping that when I come out of Reading World, I’ll find it was all a bad dream.

11-16-readingmaterial

I’ve already read the new Flea Market Style. Loved it.

Country Living, Christmas edition. I’ve never been too crazy about Christmas issues of favorite decorating magazines. I’d rather see any interior sans holiday decorations. I find them distracting. But I caved because I need…you guessed it….an escape.

The newest Lee Child – Night School. You knew I would buy it. I’ve read them all and cannot resist a new Jack Reacher mystery. Jack Reacher, as written by Mr. Child. Not the Tom Cruise version – I don’t want my image of Reacher to change from the picture I have in my head.

I know I’m rather firm about all of this, but that’s how I feel. I won’t watch Bosch  either – the series that centers on Harry Bosch, as written by Michael Connelly. Nothing against Titus Welliver, who is a fine actor and, in this case, looks rather like Bosch as written by Connelly. But I have a picture in my mind and I guard it.

And I’ll be doing the same thing when there is a series – or is it a movie – of Robert Galbraith’s (J.K. Rowling) series centered on Cormoran Strike. She is so specific in her description of Strike that when I saw a photo of the actor cast in the role, I thought, what??? Producers and casting people always seem to go for the more handsome and marketable version of a character. In Cruise’s case, about a foot shorter and 60 pounds lighter, with a completely different hair color.

The last book is a collection of speeches, essays, and articles written by the late, great Pat Conroy – A Lowcountry Heart. It just came out. I can’t wait to read it.

11-16-newestbigboy

Look who arrived in yesterday’s mail. Another Big Boy. This one is holding a Double-Decker. I haven’t had any red meat in well over 30 years, but I do remember loving a Double-Decker. My mom and I would sometimes go shopping and eat lunch at Big Boy. We always got a Double-Decker.

That makes three Big Boys, which, I told Don, now makes a collection. They’re behind me as I write this, staring at me.

And, because I miss them so, so much and I ran across this photo the other day:

Scoutie and Riley in the den. Scout in the “tunnel.” I miss them in my life and on this blog. I long for them, especially during this last week, where their presence would have been enormously comforting. I miss taking care of my babies.

Read Susan Branch’s latest post: We Have to Believe We Are Magic. Bravo, Susan.

Happy Wednesday.

Books, Miniatures, Horse Bits & A Plea To Vote

November 6, 2016 at 9:29 am by Claudia

When I hear the “You get an extra hour!” kind of comment as the time change takes place, my response is usually to grumble, “I’ll wake up when I usually wake up and it will be an hour earlier than I’d like it to be.”

But lo and behold, this morning both Don and I slept in, so the clock on the cable box (we never change the others until later in the day) was indicating a time that corresponded to our normal wake-up hour. That almost never happens. We were absurdly happy about that.

The boxes of books destined for our local library were delivered yesterday. It’s always a good feeling to donate books. Libraries are struggling and our particular library sells many of these books on a daily basis and, once a year, has a big book sale that provides much needed cash to keep it afloat. I never take a tax deduction, even when asked, as I was yesterday, if I want the paperwork for one. It’s a donation from my heart and taking a deduction just doesn’t gel with that for me. Free and clear, free and clear.

11-6-newhomefordonsstudio

Don’s Studio on its ‘new’ display table. In reality, it’s a dressing table bench from the 20s-30s. I had been thinking we would get a taller table, but Don spotted this one and it made so much more sense in this space. He has such a good eye. I really like it.

Miniatures/Dollhouses are wonderful, but in our cottage there’s only so much space in which to display them. This works. Huzzah!

Now Don’s desk has some actual working space, should he decide to use it.

Next up: the dreaded craft closet in the office/studio/whateveryouwanttocallit. I need to be ruthless. Ruthless, I say! I want to get rid of all the stuff we no longer need and store the things I might need in our storage space. Hopefully, that will give us (well, really, me) more useful space to store essentials. I have yarn, tons of fat quarters that I almost never use, craft stuff that I no longer need, blah, blah, bah. Donations will go to our local Salvation Army.

11-6-bookshelves1

The bookshelves on the left side of the sofa, post-book-purging. That open space on the second shelf from the top is where I keep my big girl camera, which I was using, of course, to take this picture. The red horse bit on top of the coffee-table-sized books on the bottom shelf was my grandfather’s. He collected horse bits from all over the world. They were always on display in his basement. Eventually, he donated them to a local museum. But somehow – I can’t remember the story now – they ended up back with my brother. They were sold after my brother died, but I grabbed this one for me because it had always been my favorite as a little girl. It was red and I loved red.

His collecting days were pre-eBay and he had a prolific correspondence going on with various people throughout the globe. I wish I had those letters!

I’ve been searching for a good place to display it and I think I’ve finally found it.

I miss my grandfather – Russ, aka Slim – the Canadian cowboy. He was a fascinating man and I really loved him.

11-6-bookshelves2a

The shelves on the right.

Gosh, building these shelves (was it last year or the year before?) was the best idea! I can’t tell you what it difference it makes in the den. Books add warmth and personality to a room. Sure, I like displaying bits of pottery and a few tchotchkes, but the reality is just books and only books would be decoration enough for me.

• VOTE. We don’t have early voting in this state (I wish we did!) so we will be voting on Tuesday. Please don’t abstain from voting. Every man/woman gets a vote; this is the great gift of our democracy. Elections aren’t rigged, though to hear some people describe them, you’d think we lived in a Banana Republic. There are efforts out there to keep certain citizens from voting, whether it is purging the voter rolls, disenfranchising whole groups of people, using social media to say you can text your vote in (you can’t), posting signs that say the voting location is some place other than where it actually is, the list goes on and on. We have to fight that misinformation. We have to vote.

It is your civic duty. It is a right that our forebears fought for. And until quite recently, it was right that was denied to African-Americans and women.

VOTE.

Happy Sunday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
