Sunday Morning Thoughts

October 2, 2016 at 9:25 am by Claudia

I’m still not feeling all that well, but I do feel a slight improvement this morning. Fingers crossed! It’s gray and rainy with a constant drizzle. I’d much prefer lots of rain as we truly need it, but no, it’s just damp, damp, damp.

I hung around the house yesterday, feeling out of sorts and whiny (lucky Don). I read and spent too much time reading about His Orangeness and tweeting in response to his insane tweets. It accomplishes nothing, I know, but it did make me feel better. I scrolled through Instagram and generally killed time. Later in the day, I watched the Red Sox for a bit and watched the second of two episodes of Luther  on Netflix. This series, starring Idris Elba, is excellent. I’ve seen the previous seasons and have urged Don to watch them, but he hasn’t so far. So when I heard that the latest season, which is really only two episodes, had come to Netflix, I used a couple of evenings when Don wasn’t here to watch them. So, so good! (I have a crush on Idris Elba. Don’t tell Don.)

Another moonflower opened yesterday:

10-2-moonflower1

10-2-moonflower2

10-2-moonflower3

10-2-moonflowerbuds

The buds emerge from the purple, what would you call it? Covering? Casing? I’m not sure what the correct word is, but the combination of purple and green is gorgeous.

There are so many buds on the vines that I fear an early frost. So far, I don’t see one predicted for the next week or two. Come on out, flowers!

I planted this bed rather late in the spring. Next year, I’ll plant on time and hopefully the flowers will emerge in late August/early September.

I don’t want to ignore the morning glories! They’re still blooming and I love them.

I’ve been reading a book I got from the library. It was recommended in the New York Times Book Review. It’s called Under the Harrow, by Flynn Berry. It’s a murder mystery that takes place in England, though Ms. Berry is American. She’s a young writer and a good writer – she writes lovely and evocative prose. However, this book suffers from what I call the Gone Girl Syndrome, which seems to be the flavor of the moment for young writers. The Gone Girl  Syndrome occurs when a writer skillfully spins a complicated plot, with lots of twists and turns – all good – but creates characters the reader (me) doesn’t really like, making it very difficult to care about any of them. So I find myself reading the book from a distance; admiring the author’s skill, but with a clinical detachment that surely isn’t what I should feel when reading a mystery.

It’s a fairly quick read, so I’m going to finish it. I’m engaged enough to want to know who the murderer is, but the characters are thoroughly unlikeable.

Ah, well. Maybe this fad will end soon?

Happy Sunday.

I Am Not In The Mood

October 1, 2016 at 9:10 am by Claudia

I took this yesterday:

10-1-leaves1

Leaves, you say?

10-1-leaves2

Yep. And there are twice as many today. It’s pretty bad when Don notices them and says, as he did this morning, “We really have to start raking leaves!”

But it’s raining today and will be raining tomorrow, so we can’t do anything yet. That’s a good thing, because I am definitely under the weather. Therefore, I am not in the mood to deal with falling leaves, especially wet ones.

I feel like crap.

Consequently, this will be a short post, my friends. I’ll try to string a coherent thought or two together and then I’ll sign off.

There’s really nothing new to report, I tried to keep busy yesterday. I did laundry, vacuumed, cleaned, went to the grocery store, picked up some books I had ordered at our library…and I just felt crappier as the day went on. So today, taking it easy is the order for the day. Don and Dan are playing at our local eatery tonight, but I’m staying home. With Don’s blessing, I might add; I think he’d stop me if I tried to go.

If I didn’t love her already, this would have done it: on a podcast I listened to, Bill Clinton said that Hillary Clinton ‘has read every book Louise Penny has written.” (She also loves Donna Leon and Elena Ferrante.)

And please, if you don’t support her, don’t bother leaving a comment. I. Am. Not. In. The. Mood. Fair warning.

Don’s bringing me a ‘treat’ from our local bakery. I need comfort food in the form of a cinnamon bun.

It’s October already. How can that be?

Happy Saturday.

Finds: Books and Records

September 19, 2016 at 9:00 am by Claudia

That photo yesterday. The  photo. I don’t know if you remember from the many times I’ve told our story in the past, but Don had been sitting in that exact place on the sofa, catching my eye and smiling at me, whenever I entered the living room of Kathy’s cottage. This happened several times. So I finally bit the bullet and walked over to him. I assume I introduced myself. I ended up sitting next to him and we started a conversation that hasn’t ended.

I’m not sure when Rick entered the picture. Was he there before I walked over to the sofa? Or did he come along later and join in? That part I’m a bit foggy about.

A few of my friends have remarked on our body language. Definitely in sync. And if you look at my eyes, you can tell I’m already smitten.

I love that picture. It will soon be framed, I promise.

Alright, on to yesterday. We were out and about and stopped at our favorite antique center – the one where I could do some major damage quite easily. I didn’t do that, of course, but I did find some unexpected treasures.

A long time ago, I wrote on this blog about my desire to collect vintage Nancy Drews. This was prompted by my discovery of a vintage Nancy Drew with a cover illustration by Russell H. Tandy; the best, in my humble opinion, of all the cover illustrators. He designed the covers from 1930 – 1949 and was a friend of Edward Stratemeyer, the actual author of the Nancy Drew books.

Look what I found yesterday:

9-19-nancydrew

Two of them! They were in the middle of a stack of books in one of the booths. Only $8 each, which is a steal, and in pretty good condition, with normal cover wear. Needless to say, I’m thrilled. This makes 3 Nancy Drews and we all know that equals a collection!

Gosh, I love the vintage look of his illustrations and the vivid colors.  I also love the font used for “Nancy Drew Mystery Stories.” I grew up reading the standard fifties and sixties books with the yellow spines and I know a lot of people collect them, but once I saw Tandy’s work, I was a goner.

In a recent conversation, Don mentioned that he had read all the Hardy Boys books when he was a kid, so, you guessed it…I am determined to collect them for him. I found one yesterday.

9-19-hardys

And here they are on the shelf:

9-19-ontheshelf

They sit in the middle of a shelf full of childhood favorites, including books that belonged to my mother and my father.

I also found two record albums.

9-19-albums

I own both of these, but they are…class? anyone? anyone?….yes! In the shed. Though the cover of Tapestry looks worn, the actual record is in great shape.

And then we stuffed our faces at a local restaurant and I ate too much, so we took a trail walk to counteract the calories.

Today, I take the car in for an inspection and some scheduled maintenance. I hate sitting in that waiting room, but it’s raining today, so I just might get stuck there. If the rain lets up, I’ll walk to Barnes & Noble.

Happy Monday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
