Sort of Random

March 20, 2014 at 9:08 am by Claudia

You’ll be proud of me. I had to see the dentist about that pesky crown (too long a story to tell here) and I actually made the appointment and went there yesterday. All by myself. I was a mess, of course, very nervous, very stressed, because this fear I have is bordering on phobia. I’d been dreading it all week.

But I did it. The dentist told me how proud he was of me and, as I was writing a check, snuck up behind me and put one of those little plastic rings they give to little kids on my finger.

It’s an orange spider.

Yes, I’m cool.

Totally random things I’ve been doing:

I wrote of the death of my former colleague and mentor in this post. As I was writing, I remembered a little silver pill box from Tiffany’s that Bob and Rick gave me and I very much wanted to find it. Turns out it was in that jewelry box that I found under the bed, along with lots of silver jewelry, much of it tarnished. I wanted to clean it but didn’t want to use a chemical-y silver cleaner. Then I ran across Ann’s post about cleaning silver naturally, using baking soda and kosher salt.

So I lined a shallow bowl with aluminum foil, filled it with warm water, added some salt (not even kosher) and baking soda (I didn’t bother to measure) and lo and behold, shiny silver!

shinysilver

The pill box is so lovely and it’s probably the only thing I’ll ever have from Tiffany’s. Oh wait, I have one other thing from Tiffany’s – an egg cup.

I wore those shiny earrings to the dentist yesterday.

plates4

I’ve had these plates for a long time – at one time I was going to list them in the Etsy shop, but I never got around to it. I found them in a local antique shop for $2.00 each. The marking on the back is Myott/Staffordshire England. Since I love flowers and aqua, these had to come home with me.

They’re dinner plates and I’ve been thinking about hanging them. But where? My thoughts ran to the studio. Perhaps on the same wall as the framed magazine articles? I even bought the plate hangers the other days at Lowe’s.

But after decluttering the studio, am I running the risk of it looking busy again?

I can’t decide. So hanging them is on hold.

almanac

I’m reading The Old Farmer’s Almanac. Why haven’t I read this before? Great articles, weather forecasts, all sorts of interesting facts – perfect for a gardener.

Oh, and I cleaned all the tiles and grout on my kitchen countertop with baking soda. Much better!

Don comes home in 2½ weeks.

Happy Thursday.

Almost forgot: Our monthly linky party for the Christmas Critter Felt Along will be this Sunday. The post will go up on Saturday evening. Mark your calendars!

Phase One Completed

January 10, 2014 at 8:26 am by Claudia

Yesterday was Phase One of The Adventures Of A Couple Living In A Small House Who Are About To Get A Bigger Bed.

Yes, the countdown has begun.

bookshelf1

When I first wrote about the California King mattress and box spring that will soon be in Mockingbird Hill Cottage, I said that I had an idea or two about rearranging the bedroom to accommodate said mattress. The one thing I knew for sure was that the IKEA Expedit bookcase that was currently on the same wall as the bed would have to be moved. The only other wall it could possibly go on was the wall where Don’s dresser is (just to the left as you enter the room.) The obvious dilemma: where to put Don’s dresser?

I gave Don his marching orders. We were to meet upstairs in the bedroom at noon and figure the whole thing out. Don, by the way, has a great eye and is very helpful in times like these. We considered moving my dresser over closer to the outside wall, closing the gap between that dresser and the sideboard that also houses the television and somehow cramming Don’s dresser in there. Or putting in on the narrow section of wall perpendicular to those pieces. With an attic-type bedroom with sloping walls, our options are limited. Very limited.

Thankfully, Don came up with an idea that I had entertained but had dismissed because I thought he might not go along with it: Why not move the dresser into the other room? The office/studio/guest bedroom? This idea seemed like a lifesaver, if it was indeed possible to somehow make space for the dresser and make it work.

And so it began. We lugged the dresser into the next room. Which led to trying to figure out why one of the drawers always stuck. Which led to me waxing the drawer slides. Which led to trying the drawers in different slots. Which led to a dresser that finally works. Which led to moving my grandmother’s trunk over on the wall so that we could move a chair into a new position. Which led to me opening the trunk and sorting through the things stored inside and dumping a lot of them. Which led to finding an old hooked rug which looks good on the floor in front of Don’s dresser.

Lunch break.

Then on to the bookcase, which I could now move. But first, I had to remove all the books and place them in piles all over the bedroom. Which led to looking at each book and making a pile of books to be donated to the library. Which led to me trucking piles of books out to the area where my sewing machine is. Which led to an upstairs that looked like a disaster zone.

Once the books were removed, I could move the bookcase to its new position. Which led to me seeing lots of dust along the wall where it previously lived. Which led to me hauling the vacuum upstairs. Which led to me vacuuming behind the bed in anticipation of the move.

Then, as I sat on the floor and/or crawled on my knees to various piles of books, I rearranged the books on the shelves. I also made a pile of magazines to be recycled. I hauled the stacks of magazines downstairs. By this time, my back was complaining loudly.

bookshelf4

It still needs tweaking, but Phase One is complete. Do you see why I want built-in bookshelves in the den? The books in these cubbies are doubled up – there are books behind the books you see. And remember, I made a four big piles of books to be donated. I only donate books I know I will no longer need or that I read but wasn’t thrilled with. Sometimes I donate review copies of the books I’ve reviewed on this blog. It’s all for a good cause. Our local library has a book sale once a year in order to raise money to keep the library going. That’s a cause I can enthusiastically support.

We won’t mention all the books in the shed.

That pile of magazines on the far right? Every Mary Engelbreit Home Companion magazine ever published. I refuse to part with them.

headshot

And Don’s new headshot took the place of his older headshot in my frame, per his orders. I’m proud to say I was the photographer for both of them. Who knew I could take an actor’s headshot?

Today, my back is aching and I feel the effects of Phase One. But it’s done! Don and I really like doing this sort of thing because sometimes, in rethinking furniture placement, we see things with fresh eyes and come up with an even better solution. It’s a win-win.

Except for my aching back!

Happy Friday.

An Early Morning Chat

November 7, 2013 at 8:22 am by Claudia

coffee

My sleep cycle has been problematic lately. So has Don’s. Last night, I woke up in the middle of the night for what must have been an hour or more, finally fell back to sleep and then promptly woke up again. Don was also awake for a long stretch. I finally admitted defeat and got up around 5:45 am. Don, who is much better at this than I, went back to sleep. Or at least I think he did. He hasn’t emerged from the bedroom yet.

Once I’m up, I’m up.

I can always tell when I haven’t had enough sleep. My eyes feel irritated and sting-y (as opposed to stingy.) I feel a wee bit edgy. I know that I could easily slip into ‘irritated mode.’ So the day becomes, in part, about trying not to descend into snappishness, trying to stay cheery and positive.

Don always says, “You can take a nap this afternoon.” But I don’t really nap anymore. Maybe, if I’m lucky, a doze of five minutes or so while sitting in my blogging chair that will take the edge off.

Though I’d much rather have had more sleep, I do like the early morning here at the cottage; still dark as I pad down the stairs, Scoutie asleep on the loveseat, coffee brewing, lamps lit.

coffeetable

A pile of books and newspapers on the coffee table. And Vaseline. (I use the Vaseline for my feet, which get very dry in the winter.)

As is.

It’s a quiet time, with the sound of early morning traffic in the background. Scout wakes up, goes outside, comes into the den with me, and after some time in the ‘tunnel,’ promptly goes back to sleep again. I’m envious.

scoutieearlymorning

As I write this, she is dreaming. Her little body is jerking and she’s making sounds of distress. What is she seeing in her dream? Now she wakes, opens her eyes, makes sure I’m here and then fades back into sleep. Peaceful again.

I love that girl.

Yesterday, I used a long extender handle with a brush and scrubbed down the side of the house that is north-facing and never fully gets the sun. It needed it. But boy, was it a messy job. A bit of chlorine-free, environmentally safe bleach added to a bucket of water, scrub, scrub, scrub, turn on the hose and rinse, more bleach, more water and on and on it went. The hose played tricks on me and doused me with water a couple of times. It was cold and gray and I was very wet at the end of the whole thing. Plus the dang extender handle locked into place and I couldn’t adjust it, so I had to do the whole job with the handle/brush at a weird angle because it was too long.

The house looks better. It was a task I should have attended to long ago. Working out-of-town for an extended period of time tends to put a lot of projects on hold. I have an ongoing list that plays on an endless loop in my brain. Do you have a To Do list that is always lingering in your thoughts? Don is sort of amazed by it. In the course of a routine conversation about something like the beauty of the leaves, I will suddenly come up with three things that have to be done that day. He can’t quite process the U-turns my thoughts can take. Is this a female thing? I don’t think Don’s thought process runs on the same switching system as mine.

flannelpjs

Ah, but all is well when I’m wearing my flannel pajamas. The other day, after a really bad bout of sleeplessness, I kept them on all day long. Defiantly. Happily. It was just the excuse I needed. And I broke out the hot chocolate.

By the way, I have been remiss in not announcing the winner of a copy of Backlash. The winner is Nancy Blue Moon. Congratulations, Nancy! Send me an email with your mailing address and I will pass it on to TLC Book Tours.

I used to do other giveaways on this blog but I have to say that nothing makes me happier than the opportunity to give away books. I’m passionate about them and love that I can share them with you.

Happy Thursday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
