When You Fall In Love With A Table

September 26, 2016 at 9:32 am by Claudia

We fell in love with a table.

Let me backtrack. I was restless yesterday afternoon, so Don and I went for a drive. Not sure which way to go, Don said, “Do you want to see your bookstore friends?” And I said yes. So we drove along the back roads on a brilliant autumn day to Rosendale.  We stopped at the bookshop and chatted with Jesse and Maggie and looked at books. Interestingly, I actually didn’t buy anything.

As we walked down the street, we started to pass our friend Elizabeth’s vintage shop. And then we stopped in our tracks. There it was, on the sidewalk in front of the shop. (I’d seen it when she posted it on FB, so had Don, but I’d forgotten about it.)

It was a vintage wooden French Bistro/Café table – the type that folds up when not in use. Elizabeth found it at Brimfield and brought it back to her shop.

We stared at it. Elizabeth said we could open it up, so we did. It  was 36 inches by 20 inches. We were smitten. But where the heck would we put it? It had a gorgeous patina, with nicks and scratches and aged edges. It also had writing on both ends of the table. Advertising? The maker of the table? Not sure. We stood there. We asked Elizabeth the price of this gorgeous antique. It was very reasonable.

We decided to go for it. We knew we would regret it if we didn’t snap it up; most likely, we wouldn’t see one like it again.

On the way home, we discovered we had both been thinking the same thing. Why not put it where the loveseat was in the living room? We wanted it to be highlighted in some way and in our cozy and crowded cottage, that can be difficult. Maybe we’d put the loveseat in storage.

First, let me show you the table. Then I’ll describe what happened in the next 3 hours!

Here it is right after we set it up, in the late afternoon sun.

This text is at both ends of the table.

The other end. Can you see that gorgeous patina? Can you see French men and women sitting there, cigarettes in hand, café au lait in front of them? If this table could talk, what stories it could tell!

Now, our dilemma. After the loveseat had been pulled out of this niche, what to do? Should we put the loveseat in storage? After all, I’d had it since my Boston days and I’d developed a love/hate relationship with it.

Just chairs around the coffee table?

We tried it but it didn’t seem to work. I insisted there needed to be more balance, especially after we pulled up the rugs (more on that later). I don’t mind telling you, there were a few good natured arguments about what to store and what to keep. At one point, we felt like we’d reached an impasse and weren’t sure what to do.

We live in a small space, as you well know, and we needed to rethink things so that the  bistro table had space around it and the room didn’t become over-crammed. Don expressed a desire for a slightly more minimal look.

I get it. I’m about to do a big purge anyway.

After trying every possible combination; vintage porch chair upstairs in the office, measuring the office to see if the loveseat could fit in that space comfortably, moving red chair to den (no and no and no) we decided to put the yellow chair in storage. It’s big and bulky and it’s looking a bit worse for the wear. To tell you the truth, I’d grown to dislike it intensely. Don decided he wanted to use the red chair as his chair.

But I wanted the vintage porch chair in the room as well, because as much as I’d love it upstairs in the office/studio, when I’m there, I sit at the desk. So it would be wasted there. And it’s my favorite chair!

This is what we ended up with. (Ignore the mess by the white cupboard, that’s still ‘in process.’)

We rolled all the rugs up except for the small, blue circular rug. It’s in the area near the stairs. The rugs were necessary when we had the dogs, but we found we were craving an expanse of wide-plank pine floors. And they really chopped up the space, which suited us for a while, but doesn’t suit us any longer.

We took the slipcover off the loveseat. It was falling apart, anyway, so it was time to scrap it. I vacuumed the heck out of the cushions. I ran upstairs and grabbed an old throw that was a rich, deep red and threw it over the back of the sofa.

It seems much more spacious in here! The floor lamp that was next to the piano moved over to its new home next to Don’s chair.

Don (he has a good eye, that one) felt that the Maxfield Parrish, Dinky Bird, should be moved downstairs to the wall behind the table. He was right. And the canvas of The Lamb With The Party Hat moved upstairs to my office, which is only fitting, as it’s the symbol of this blog.

The Roseville that was on the coffee table moved over to this table. And then I grabbed the old ice cream maker filled with dried hydrangeas from the top of the white cabinet in the kitchen and it all worked.

Stamped on the top left edge of the table.

Be still my heart.

The firkin on the blue table was my grandmother’s.

I moved the plant that lives in the McCoy jardiniere from the den to the center of the coffee table.

This room, more than any other room in the house, is completely transformed by the changes of light during the course of a day. This was taken about an hour ago. I’ll take more photos as the day goes on and share them with you during the week.

The back of the sofa.

Photos were quickly taken yesterday afternoon and this morning. After all, we spent hours reconfiguring this space and, let me tell you, moving furniture around in here is no easy feat. Then Don had to leave for a meeting and it was dark out. I’ll get out my tripod this week and take better photos.

You know how it is? You buy one new thing, which means something else has to go, and suddenly you’re in the midst of a puzzle. One thing moves and everything else has to move.

The yellow chair will go in our storage space.

We like the change a lot. Actually, we love it.

Happy Monday.

Rearranging

August 27, 2016 at 10:37 am by Claudia

The roller coaster ride that is a lot of sleep, then too little sleep, then a lot of sleep continues. I have to follow the same advice I give to Don: Some times it just happens. You’ll get through the day.

It’s true.

So, it was very hot and humid yesterday which made me stay in the house except for the usual watering of plants. I sat in our newish chair in the living room and read. Occasionally my eyes would wander over to the portraits of Scout and Riley on the wall.

And then to the Parrish.

And then back again to the dogs.

So I finally got up and tried the canvas of Riley and Scout in place of the Parrish.

8-27 dogwall

Much better. It belongs there. When Winston arrives, the wall will be complete.

So…where to put the Parrish? I wandered around the house, trying it here and there. We have limited wall space, especially upstairs where we have attic rooms with slanted walls. I stood in the studio/office and thought about it. I left the Parrish propped up against the work table. I walked away.

Eventually, I tried this:

8-27 parrish

I had the calendar hanging here, but I moved it over to the far left side of the shelf, after trying the Parrish there first. I preferred it here, because just to its right is this:

8-27 2parrishes2

I may tweak the placement of The Dinky Bird – maybe a bit closer to Pierrot’s Serenade.

When I first created this little space, I was all for keeping it clean. By that, I mean relatively free of clutter on the desk and clutter on the walls.

I failed miserably.

I have stuff. Let’s face it. I collect egg cups, I collect mini pottery (over on the wall to the left of the desk,) I have a bulletin board full of memories and photos, I have all the clutter that goes with building  miniatures, and then I have the Parrishes. And the pottery. And…you get the picture.

But I thought about the Maxfield Parrish and how much I love his work and how long I’ve waited and waited to be able to purchase one or two of them and I thought: why not have them both on the wall that faces me when I’m working at my desk? I can lift my gaze from the keyboard and gaze upon the glorious colors and smile. And I do.

8-27 newchair

One other thing. I mentioned this on Instagram a few weeks back, but I don’t think I shared it here. We found this chair at our new favorite antique shop for $25.00. It’s a mid-century bentwood chair and, gosh, is it comfortable. It’s been added to our mismatched set of chairs that surround the kitchen table. It’s in great shape. I love it.

In case you’re interested: the Matryoshka doll/tea ball and tin of Anastasia tea were given to me by the producers of Anastasia, as was the round medallion on top of the tea tin. The tiny Delft shoes were a gift from Susi in Amsterdam, the shadow box contains a brooch give to me by my late brother, and the tin over on the work table was an antique shop find.

Happy Saturday.

The Arrangement

August 14, 2016 at 9:56 am by Claudia

The heat index hit 109 degrees yesterday. Heck, it might have hit 110, but I can only vouch for the temp when I clicked on the weather app on my phone. The same today.

I will be so happy to see the last of this – maybe tomorrow or Tuesday? I’m not sure, but I do know that the grass is too long, the weeds are too many, and we’re sick of staying inside because there is an “excessive heat warning.”

We did decide on the placement for the watercolor of Scout, as well as the pencil sketch. Don and I tend to make these decisions together as the placement of beloved items, whether we’re talking about furniture or wall art, is important to both of us. We decided we wanted her in the living room, a room we spend a fair amount of time in. As it turns out, she’s looking down on her favorite place to sleep, which seems fitting.

8-14 closeup

As Don said, she’s protecting us.

Looking at her, we think one word: Joy. I also love the fact that the turntable, the albums, the name of the Parrish, which is “Pierrot’s Serenade,” not to mention the piano to the right – all represent music which is so important to us and was a big part of our life with Scout. When she was younger, every time we put on some music and started dancing, she would want to join in. She’d get up on her hind legs and we’d hold her paws and all three of us would dance.

8-14 newarrangement1

(We love the light streaming in these windows, but it does make taking pictures a somewhat frustrating task!)

Previously, the Maxfield Parrish was the only piece hanging here. We thought we’d hang the watercolor here, move the Parrish, and maybe hang the pencil sketch on the stairway gallery wall. But then we played around with possibilities for the Parrish, which is very special to me and not something I want to hide away, so we went with the Parrish and the watercolor. That seemed a bit off, so I grabbed the pencil sketch and then we knew we had a winner. The arrangement also takes the focus off the alarm pad and the thermostat, which is just fine with me.

8-14 newarrangementwithchair

We also played with hanging the Parrish next to the Aquitania, but that gorgeous lithograph shouldn’t have any competition in its place above the piano. It needs to be the star.

8-14 sideview

8-14 chair

Just had to get a shot of our newest find. I love, love, love this chair. And it’s so comfortable!

8-14 intokitchen

I wish a magazine photographer would come in here and take some pictures. Not so much because I’m craving a magazine feature (I sincerely doubt that this house is ‘magazine-worthy’) but it would be so great to have some photos that were taken by someone who knows what he/she is doing! Wouldn’t that be nice?

What were we doing while all of this was going on?

8-14 kennyrankin

Listening to some Kenny Rankin – one of our favorite albums.

I know there’s a lot of focus on Scout, because we lost her most recently. But I’d love to get a good photo of Winston to enlarge and hang; difficult because he had a black coat and I didn’t have a good camera then, so our photos aren’t the best. And I’m going to find a place for this photo – my favorite one of Riley and Scout:

scoutandriley

I framed this and it’s in our bedroom. But I’d also like it down here in the living room. We need Riley with us, too. Dear Riley, who also loved music. Whenever I played the piano, he would come over and plop himself down. It soothed him. And both Riley and Winston loved it when Don played the guitar.

I’ll work on that.

Oh, by the way, I woke up early this morning and after I snuggled up to Don, I went back to sleep whereupon I dreamed I was Michael Phelp’s girlfriend.

Happy Sunday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
