Tending Riley’s Dish Garden

March 25, 2014 at 8:37 am by Claudia

I’ve been searching for succulents to replace the ones that didn’t make it when I knocked over Riley’s Dish Garden about a week ago. Right now, the pickings are slim around my neck of the woods. I’m sure there will be much more available when the nurseries put out their new stock for the spring. But since snow is forecast for the Northeast today, I think that’s going to have to wait. (By the way, I think we are going to dodge that bullet, with only a sprinkling of snow. Cross your fingers.)

I did find two plants, one of which will probably have to be transferred to a pot in the near future. But in the meantime, my precious Riley’s Dish Garden has been replanted.

The tall plants in the back are from the original dish garden.

I miss my boy.

I was fine yesterday when I was adding soil and plants but, today, looking at these photos? I’m suddenly teary eyed. I see the dish and I see his big brown eyes. I can smell his wonderful scent. I feel the silky smooth hair on his ears and forehead. I tell him I love him and miss him and oh, how I wish he was here.

You never get over the loss, do you?

I was recently telling someone the story of our first dog, Winston, and his rapid decline at the age of eight when a tumor was discovered on his heart. To my surprise, I started to cry. It’s been over ten years since we said goodbye to our beloved boy, yet in an instant I can be right back in that horrible time of grief and loss. It wasn’t until a year or so after we lost Winston that I realized I had been in a sort of depression for several months following his death.

My dogs are my children. As I watch Scout lose the crazy energy she once had, see her slow down and sleep more, hear her groan because of her aching joints, with eyes and ears that aren’t functioning as sharply as they used to, I know that this time is precious. Beyond precious. We are all too aware that she is 15 and we are so grateful she is still with us. Don doesn’t like being away from her at this time in her life. I understand. She is everything to us. She is our daughter. She is the magic dog that everyone loves. Her smile lights up the room.

Ah, I’m crying again.

Anyway. I know you understand. Riley has been gone for a year and a half, though it seems like yesterday when he was here with us. Winston has been gone for over 10 years, yet in an instant, I am with him.

I like to think they are with me in spirit and soul. I hope they are. I hope they nuzzle up against me when I’m down. I hope Winston and Riley visit Scout, who has outlived them both. I hope that, when I am sleeping upstairs, they are all having a fine time together downstairs. Wouldn’t that be nice?

Once again, a blog post has taken me somewhere I didn’t expect to go. I was just going to write about the new look of the Dish Garden and here I am, writing about love and loss.

By the way, Scout is on Glucosamine and that has helped a lot. Nevertheless, she has swelling on her joints, her hips hurt, she limps a little. She gets tired easily. But her spirit is strong.

Let’s close on a ‘cute’ note. While I was at the nursery, there was a display of minis meant for fairy gardens. But fairy gardens are ubiquitous and I have enough to handle with my real-sized gardens. However, one piece stood out and I bought it.

For my dollhouse, of course.

adirondackchair

Yep. That adirondack chair. The owner of the dollhouse sits in it and reads while drinking a glass of iced tea. Sometimes she props her legs up on the porch railing. Sometimes she just sits and watches the world go by.

Happy Tuesday.

Cleaning, Reorganizing & Gifts for the Dollhouse

March 17, 2014 at 8:36 am by Claudia

alstro

Alstromeria = best bang for your buck. They last a good two weeks or more; I’ve had them last as long as three weeks. That’s why I buy them. (And they are very pretty.)

In my continuing quest not to go insane this winter, I’m trying to motivate myself to do things around here. You’ve all heard more than enough about the crazy weather I’ve been coping with. Add in Don being gone and an extended period without coaching work, which is not helping things at all, and you get a Claudia who is a wee bit depressed and stir crazy. Not to mention a wee bit worried about my income and my seemingly waning career.

Anyway, those two cooking pots I bought at IKEA needed to be stored somewhere, which sparked a rather massive clean-out and reorganization of my lower kitchen cupboards, as well as the two cupboards in the kitchen island.  You’ve been there, right? Tupperware containers without lids, lids without containers, pot lids that don’t fit any pot; it’s really mind boggling how those things pile up and magically reproduce in the dark corners of kitchen cabinets. I wiped down surfaces, vacuumed out crumbs, reorganized and dumped.

Much better.

I also cleaned out and wiped down the inside of the dishwasher, which we don’t use because it has never worked right, and now it is the new home for some pots and pans. I told Don yesterday that I’d like a dishwasher that works. I don’t think that’s asking too much, do you?

A week or so ago, I also cleaned out a junk drawer or two in the kitchen.

Don won’t know what hit him when he gets back home.

Now I’d like to tackle the guest bedroom/office/studio but a lot of the stuff in there is Don’s. Hmmm.

I have another rapper-like nickname for a medical condition to add to yesterday’s list: AFib. Because, apparently, atrial fibrillation isn’t hip enough for pharmaceutical commercials.

A dear reader, Sharon, sent me two sweet additions for my dollhouse and I’ve been meaning to share them with you.

sewingmachine

A lovely sewing machine, not unlike my Featherweight, Mabel. Isn’t it perfect?

And a furry addition:

doggiebeggingface

doggiebegging

This doggie knows where the treats are, just like someone else I know.

Thank you so much, Sharon!

Okay, beloved readers: suggestions for this doggie’s name are now being taken. The owner of the dollhouse needs your help!

Happy Monday.

Dollhouse Updates & Your Prayers

January 23, 2014 at 7:48 am by Claudia

The most important thing I want to share with you today is a request for your prayers for my dear friend Judy and her husband John. After a very tough several months, with John batting prostate cancer and other ills, Judy and John were just about to leave for a vacation in Galveston when they discovered that John has another form of cancer. They have canceled their trip and John is to have surgery this morning. I spoke to Judy on the phone and she is devastated and scared and exhausted.

A few months ago, I called Judy and John answered the phone because Judy wasn’t home and we proceeded to have a long and delightful conversation that showed me what a charming and wonderful man he is and why he and Judy are so perfect for each other. Please send your prayers and your healing energy to John today. And to Judy. I believe in that power.

I did some work on the craft room/office/studio/whatever in the dollhouse yesterday.

worktable

I painted the worktable. I blended two shades (a pale aqua and a pale green) to come up with this shade.

worktable&bookshelf

I also painted a bookshelf that I’ve had for a while. It’s a little blurry in this photo and I’m not sure if I will eventually use it, but I thought it might work temporarily.

And then I tried a little something. As you know, I’ve been looking for a refrigerator for the dollhouse. I don’t like most of the ones I see. For some reason, they don’t look right to me. I will continue my search, but in the meantime, I found a little wooden box with curved edges that I thought might work as a vintage/retro refrigerator. Yesterday, I slapped some paint on it.

retrofridge

It may be a bit too wide, but I kept thinking of those great vintage refrigerators that were around when I was a very young child – sort of wide and squat with both the refrigerator and freezer behind the same door. I used a picture hanger for the handle.

It’s temporary, I’m thinking. But I rather like it! And it fills up that empty space next to the counter.

kitchen

Don came up with a great idea for the tower room on top of the house. Brilliant. After I finish up the main part of the house, I’ll get started on that.

We watched Robert Redford in All is Lost last night. It’s available On Demand on our cable system. Powerful. Haunting. And Redford does indeed give the performance of his career. I must say I find it stunning that he wasn’t nominated for an Academy Award. A pretty glaring omission.

I lost a crown last night and have to find a dentist today to fix that. Confession: I am terrified of the dentist. Truly. It’s something I avoid and dread and to top it off, I haven’t had dental insurance for a long time. We do have it now. I have some other teeth that need attending to and I barely slept last night because I was so nervous. So say a little prayer for me, too.

Happy Thursday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
