Around the Garden

June 8, 2018 at 10:07 am by Claudia

They’re all over the property, these beautiful wild roses, which just a month or so ago I was cutting down because they are also known as pesky brambles. And they’re a pain in the tush. But for a few weeks every June, they bloom and there are clouds of sweet scented white flowers everywhere.

Here they are flanking the path to one of our crabapple trees, just off the secret garden. I wish they bloomed all summer long.

The second day of the first rose to bloom. So lovely.

Soon to be gone poppies.

Opening any day now. About a week later than usual – the first time that’s happened in the 12 years we’ve lived here.

On the porch.

The tragic suicides of Kate Spade and Anthony Bourdain this week are deeply shocking and very sad. Despite money, fame and all the things that we on the outside think must make for a perfect life, we never truly know the battles that are being waged in private. For anyone. I’ve lost more than a few friends to suicide. It’s heartbreaking and seemingly senseless to those who are left behind. “But she had a child!” “He had an amazing job and life!” “But he/she was rich!” “How could you leave a child behind?”

It’s a tragic permanent solution for the person who, in that one moment in time, can see no other solution to the pain that rages within. When nothing matters but relief.

Remember to be kind. To reach out with a smile. To never assume you know what someone’s life is like.

If the only thing we lived by was kindness, this world would be a better place. It wouldn’t solve everything. It wouldn’t magically erase mental illness. But it would go a long way toward making the world a gentler place to live in.

Happy Friday.

Vintage Bookshelf and a Rose

June 7, 2018 at 9:04 am by Claudia

We’ve had a couple of gray days in a row with coolish temperatures. Good for mowing, which I did a lot of yesterday, not so good for the spirits. I’m trying to do some work outside every day. Garden work, mowing, pruning plants and cutting branches – all of which I’ve done since I got home on Sunday night – allows me some respite from the sadness of the show closing.

Meanwhile, audiences love the show, stand and cheer and sing during the curtain call, as they do every performance, every day of the week. Go figure.

Okay. Have to move on or I’ll cry again.

The bookshelf in progress. (Ask me how much I dislike this carpeting.)

The lighting isn’t great at the moment and I’ll try more photos on a sunnier day, but I thought I owed you an update.

The Nancy Drews are on the top shelf. I need two more to complete my collection and it looks like they’ll fit perfectly.

A vintage Schoenhut child’s piano and an English candy tin decorated with adorable little children, along with copies of Heidi  and Anne of the Island  are on the second shelf.

The bottom shelf includes my mom’s editions of Anne of Green Gables  and Daddy Long Legs, my dad’s copy of Dave Darrin on Mediterranean Service, Don’s Hardy Boys (there are more around here somewhere) and my vintage copies of Girl of the Limberlost  (two different editions) and another copy of Daddy Long Legs. And a vintage school pencil sharpener.

Underneath is a firkin that was my grandmother’s.

This little shelf was worth every penny. It’s one-of-a-kind, lovingly handmade for Martha Jane.

The first rose appeared in the Memorial Garden yesterday.

Happy Thursday.

Blooms

June 5, 2018 at 9:03 am by Claudia

Blooming:

I tried to sit on the porch this morning, but a little sparrow kept chirping at me. Flitting from the rose bush to the clematis, he/she was clearly anxious. I finally realized that there’s a nest down in the boxwood and the parent was trying to feed some babies.

So I came inside.

Can’t I just sit on my porch for a while?

Thank you for all your kind comments.

I will be perfectly honest here and say that I’m not doing well.

So, while I’ll post daily, I might not write much. Or I might. Who knows? I’m just trying to keep busy between bouts of profound sadness. Trying to stay strong for my husband who is doing his best to cope and be positive in the midst of heartbreak and loss. I don’t want to say more than that because it’s his story and it should be private.

Thanks for understanding.

Also: I think my AOL email was hacked. I changed my password of course, but if you get anything weird, just delete it.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
