My Moment with Lauren Bacall

August 13, 2014 at 8:28 am by Claudia

Since it was cloudy and overcast yesterday afternoon, I grabbed the opportunity to take a walk with Don on our local rail trail. (I’m supposed to stay out of the direct sun while on my antibiotic.) It was late in the day, rather spur of the moment, and it felt so good to hike, even for a relatively short distance. I love my cottage, but the walls were closing in on me!

The butterfly bush always blooms in late July/August. I love the graceful, slightly droopy look of the blooms.

So pretty. I’m thinking of extending this garden bed next spring.

The great Lauren Bacall died yesterday. I have a Lauren Bacall story for you (slightly revised from the version I posted on Facebook as I remember the details more clearly.)

Several years ago, Don was part of a concert version of Finian’s Rainbow that was staged for one night only to benefit the Irish Repertory Theater in Manhattan. He played the bigoted (and funny) Senator Billboard Rawkins. Afterward, we attended a gala celebrating the benefit and somehow I ended up standing near a table where Lauren Bacall and Phyllis Newman were seated. Don was to my left, conversing with someone, and I was momentarily looking in the direction of Ms. Bacall. I could tell that she and Phyllis Newman recognized Don from the show. She smiled at me and said hello, asked my name and nodded toward Don approvingly. I said, “That’s my husband.” She lit up and said in that wonderfully deep and husky voice, “Well, your husband is tahRIFic!”  She landed that last word in her inimitable Bacall style. (If you were here, I’d do my version of it for you.) Anyway, I beamed from ear to ear and thanked her. She was so warm and generous and friendly and down-to-earth. I was greatly impressed by her and more than a bit star-struck. I’m so lucky to have had that moment with her.

Rest in Peace, Lauren Bacall.

There’s a new post up on Just Let Me Finish This Page, asking the question: What works of fiction had a profound effect on you? I’d love to hear your choices.

Happy Wednesday.

Flora and Fauna Edition

August 12, 2014 at 8:26 am by Claudia

Yesterday, I was walking Scoutie on the property. As I headed around the corner of the porch, I saw the most gorgeous Eastern Tiger Swallowtail butterfly. He was on one of the blooms on the butterfly bush, wings fully spread, quite still.

No camera.

So I tried to hurry Scout along as best I could so I could get her back in the house and grab my camera. I managed to get back there with the camera, but the butterfly had changed positions. He moved around a lot more and I could never quite capture that stillness he had when I first saw him. I think he sensed my presence.

I followed him around the property. Here he is on the phlox. But the images are a bit blurry because his wings were moving. This will give you an idea of his size and his beauty.

I rather like this photo. Wings in Motion.

But oh, if I had the camera with me when I was walking Scout, what a picture that would have made!

Then there’s my pal, the Hummingbird Moth. He’s everywhere: the phlox, the butterfly bush, the hanging plants. He moves very quickly.

This morning I opened the door to let Scout out and thought I saw something, but couldn’t be sure.

I grabbed my camera.

first morning glory

I was shocked. The morning glories have been growing very slowly this year. Some of the shoots haven’t even reached the fence yet and the vines have yet to really take off. I didn’t expect anything out of it until at least the end of the month.

So this was a delightful surprise!

August 12, 2014: The first morning glory bloom of the season.

And you know I love my morning glories.

We’re due for rain today and tomorrow. We really need it as it’s been very dry here lately. But I hope it holds off for a while so I can try to find that darn butterfly again!

On another note.

I’m heartbroken by the tragic death of Robin Williams. His talent and heart were enormous. Many of you have either struggled with depression or watched someone you love struggle with it. It is very, very real. I’ve lost friends to suicide, friends who saw no way out, who couldn’t summon another possibility in that one moment in time. To try and understand the death-grip of depression from a rational point of view is pointless. All rationality goes out the window. What is needed is compassion. I pray that those who suffer from depression and who feel lost will reach out for help. We need to erase the stigma that surrounds depression. It’s an illness. As is addiction.

Such, such sadness this morning.

Happy Tuesday.

Potpourri on Saturday

August 9, 2014 at 8:45 am by Claudia

I have to say the weather here has been simply gorgeous for the past few days, even though my time outside is limited. Low humidity, sunny skies, cool nights….heavenly, indeed. In fact, I’m sitting here in the blogging chair wrapped in a lightweight throw. Who would have thought?

I’m halfway through The Mockingbird Next Door: Life with Harper Lee and I’m completely caught up in this wonderful peek into Miss Lee’s life in Alabama. I spent most of the day reading it. Oh, Harper Lee, what an amazing person you are. Look for a review Monday on Just Let Me Finish This Page. I’m also halfway through Laura Lippman’s After I’m Gone, which will be reviewed on this blog next Thursday. I’m reading two-handed at the moment.

spirea & bee

I missed the first bloom of the spirea because I was in Chautauqua. But there’s always a smallish second bloom, which I’m grateful for.

After I wrote about my obsession with Palamino Blackwing pencils, a couple of you ordered some and….you like them! There’s always a risk when I go on and on about how wonderful a thing is that you just might not feel the same way. So I’m very happy that you find them as terrific as I do. That makes me smile.

In that same vein, I want to pass along a couple of sites that I think you might like. You may already know about them, but I only recently discovered them and I’m hooked. There are so many design sites out there and some of them are regular stops on my daily travels around the web. But I find a lot of them a bit limited; too much mid-century modern, too much all-white, too much of one thing. I tend to avoid them. But my new favorite site, Remodelista, is full of all sorts of interiors. Yes, the hip is there, but there is so much variety that I think you’ll really like it. And it doesn’t just focus on ‘trends,’ thank goodness. Trends make my eyes glaze over. (Though, they do use the word ‘trending’ a lot. I just ignore it.) It’s run by a group of contributors and the content is fresh and varied and there’s something for everyone. The homes featured are from all over the world. When I first discovered Remodelista, I spent about three hours going through the archives. Because, like all of us, I like to look at photos of interiors, but I prefer seeing interiors that speak of the person living there, that look real and lived in and individual and are not so staged that they might as well be in a model home.

Then I discovered Remodelista’s sister site, Gardenista. Need I say more? Such gorgeous photos of all sorts of gardens; big, small, and in between. Lots of handy tips. And, like Remodelista, the gardens are from all over the world. I think you’ll like both sites.

spires of liatris

And I also have to pass along a link to this feature on Houzz. This is the most adorable tiny cottage in New Hampshire. I just saw it this morning and fell in love with it. You’ll be fantasizing about living in your own tiny little cottage, not as tiny as the one room Tiny House movement, which is wonderful but more than a bit impractical for most of us, but in a perfectly small and perfectly perfect little clapboard cottage.

It’s now 8:30. I have to stall for another thirty minutes before I can have my second cup of coffee with half and half. I’m counting the minutes.

Happy Saturday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
