6-30 hydrangea

There’s a sea of Annabelle hydrangea blossoms beyond what you see in this picture. Fat, gorgeous flowers. I’ll try to get my act together and get a closeup in the next couple of days.

The glider is just in front of this railing. I love sitting there, hydrangeas at my back, roses blooming (that is, the ones that aren’t being attacked by Japanese Beetles…yes, they’re back) colorful impatiens on benches, on the vintage ladder, on the picnic table.

I also found some mealy bugs attacking my coneflowers in the side garden. I’m ticked off. I’ve been doing some research and plan to buy something organic and safe today (I don’t use pesticides) but if you have any advice, I’d surely welcome it!

6-30 lavender

We went on a trail walk yesterday. Sometimes, when you’re in the midst of wrestling with decisions, weighing this, weighing that, and you feel completely muddled and talked out – a trail walk is just the thing to clear your head. It worked. And it was lovely, to boot.

We’ve been watching the Olympic Trials for swimming every evening this week. Such dedication, such talent, such strength and persistence! Meredith knows one of the qualifiers because of my nephew’s many years as a competitive swimmer. It’s heartbreaking, though, to see those who just miss out on going to the Olympics, sometimes by hundredths of a second. All that training, all that work – and then you have to wait another four years. I want to jump inside the television screen and hug them.

6-30 hollyhocks

They’re going nuts, these hollyhocks! It seems to me that there were two stems last year and this year there are eight. Four times the flowers. Hollyhocks are biennials, I’ve learned. So does that mean that these two summers with them are all I’m going to get? I hope not.

Some weed whacking on the agenda for today – maybe some mowing, but it’s been so dry here that the grass hasn’t grown all that much and we’re thinking we should wait a few days.

Happy Thursday.

Thunder, Lightning, Books, Flowers & Theater

June 29, 2016 at 8:32 am by Claudia

Big, big thunderstorm last night! It seemed to go on for hours. Cracks of lightning, the sky lit up, thunder, torrential rain.  This morning everything in the garden is water-logged and sort of smashed down. I know this because I had to go out to remind Henry that the big garden bed was not for him. That scamp!

During the storm, I had my iPhone out and was checking The Weather Channel. There was a warning saying “Lightning Strikes in your area. 0 miles WSW.” In other words, right here. When I tapped the warning, a map came up and I could see all the lightning strikes happening around us and it was actually sort of terrifying! It felt like we were sitting ducks! Maybe it’s better not  to know that sort of thing.

Impatiens are my favorite plant for our shady porch and there are pots and pots of them. Normally, I overwinter several of them, but I only overwintered one plant this past winter.

6-29 floweronimpatiens

Yesterday, the first flower opened up on that overwintered plant. Hurrah!

We chat with Little Z most every night, but now we have introduced FaceTime to the mix. I had a long FaceTime chat with Z the other day where we talked and laughed and he asked to see ‘my things’ and I played a little of the piano for him. He immediately requested another chat, which took place yesterday evening. I love seeing his adorable little face on the screen. I do my best to make him laugh and give him kisses and Uncle Don, who was in the middle of cooking dinner, also made an appearance that sent Z off into gales of laughter. (We’re actors, after all, and are really good with funny faces and voices.) Added bonus: I get to see my dear sister. I had a nice long chat (a traditional phone call) with her yesterday afternoon, as well.

6-29 yarrowinbigbed

Yarrow in the big garden bed. I have two yarrows this year.

I’ve started John Connolly’s newest book (I’m a big fan) titled, A Time of Torment. It won’t be published until the beginning of August, but I have an eGalley. You know that feeling when you open the newest book by a favorite author and you read the first page or two and then you sigh with happiness because you know you’re in good hands? That’s what I felt yesterday.

I’ll feel the same way when Daniel Silva’s newest comes out next month and Louise Penny publishes her newest at the end of August. By the way, in case you missed it, I reviewed a book by a new-to-me author yesterday as part of Soho Crime’s 25th Anniversary Read-Along. It’s Rock Paper Tiger  by Lisa Brackmann. I really liked it and plan to read the other books in this series. Book review here.

We received the official news yesterday that Anastasia  will open on Broadway on April 24, 2017 at the Broadhurst Theater. Even better, the actors playing the four leading characters have been signed. I love that – they are talented actors who captivated audiences and deserve to be a part of the Broadway production. Bravo!

Wonderful piece of writing on LitHub: On the Invisibility of Middle-Aged Women.

Happy Wednesday.

Tuesday Thoughts

June 28, 2016 at 10:16 am by Claudia

6-28 tigerlilies

• It rained yesterday afternoon and into the evening, a nice gentle rain, and we’re due for some thunderstorms today. We really need the rain, so I will happily stay inside and read today, content to let the rain soak into the ground and perhaps raise a wee bit the levels of our rivers. Huzzah for some rain!

• Does anyone else out there catch their breath and/or chuckle when you see an article, say, on Apartment Therapy or Design Sponge, and the title involves the word ‘vintage’ and when you look at the photos, the furniture is the style everyone was using in your youth? I did that this morning. When I see the word vintage, I’m expecting something much older than mid-century modern – called contemporary or modern when I was growing up. So I click on the article based on the word ‘vintage’ and I end up saying, “Oh that. Vintage to you, maybe. Not vintage to me!”

If that’s vintage, then I guess I’m vintage. But it’s a good vintage, I’ll tell you that.

6-28 tallhollyhock

• This hollyhock was a volunteer and I’m so thrilled by its beauty. And its height! All of this in a shallow raised bed, and that, my friends, is a wonder. And it blocks the view of the rain barrel. (That dash of red you see at the base of the plant is a pail I have yet to move.)

6-28 hhupclose

• On Sunday, I did a little housekeeping on the blog navigation bar, specifically, the Dollhouse Tab. That tab used to take you to information on Hummingbird Cottage and a Source List and other dollhouse posts. I’ve now added two tabs – one for Hummingbird Cottage, one for The Studio, and one for the Source List and Tutorials. I think it’s much clearer now.

6-28 hangingplant

• I could write a whole post about this – who knows, I just may do that someday: What happens after you’ve been blogging for several years and you lose your mojo? Or you run out of ideas for posts? I’ve been pondering this lately as many of the blogs I used to follow seem to have fizzled out. Sometimes the posts have dwindled down to once a week, or once a month. Sometimes, and I’ve seen this a lot lately, there are hardly any ‘real’ posts anymore – just a series of sponsored posts, posts where photos copied from Pinterest or other blogs are used to create a ‘theme;’ basically, posts that have lost the author’s voice. Any blogger who has been blogging for several years will tell you that it’s hard to keep things fresh. Some bloggers, when faced with that challenge, stop blogging. Or they move on to Instagram.

There’s no rule or law that says you have to keep blogging. Or that the focus of your blog has to stay the same. Really – there are no rules at all, despite all the advice blogs that will tell you there are. This blog is my take on blogging, and it’s very personal. Not everyone wants to be personal and I get that. Not everyone wants to read a blog like mine, either, and I get that, too. But I feel a sadness when I see my preferred reading choices in blogland change and become something else, something that lacks any sort of authenticity. At the very least, they lose the voice that made them compelling to begin with.

I’ve been talking to Don about this sort of thing and I’ve made a vow that if I find I’ve lost my mojo or that my posts are becoming something that you could find on any generic blog or website, I’ll quietly fold my tent and move on.

I don’t have any answers on this one, just a plea to remember who you are and why you started blogging and what it was that drew readers to your little home on the web to begin with. That’s what your readers want to see.

There is a book review up on Just Let Me Finish This Page today. Stop by!

Happy Tuesday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
