Hello, Saturday

May 31, 2014 at 8:27 am by Claudia

How are you this fine Saturday morning? Other than my internet connection being sluggish (have to call the cable company) and returning a big old bug to his proper place outdoors, the morning has been fairly quiet. The sun is shining, the garden is thriving, my coffee tastes really good, and though I have more than a few worries at the moment, morning always brings the promise of a new day and that, my friends, is a little miracle.

bye bye lilacs

So long lilacs. You were especially beautiful this year.

clematis unfurling

Hello, Clematis. You’re awfully exotic looking.

peony with ants

Soon. Maybe in about 3 or 4 days? Which would take us to the first week of June. Like clockwork.

quince fruit

Remember the Weigela turned Flowering Quince?

Yep. That’s fruit. I guess that once the bush bloomed in the Spring every year, I didn’t really take the time to look at it closely again. This year I did, and darn it all if there isn’t fruit developing. Let’s see, I not only thought it was a Weigela, I insisted it was because there were no thorns or fruit.

This year I found thorns.

I found fruit.

I stand corrected.

rose bud and bug

The rose bushes are developing buds. Oh happy day!

For those of you who might have missed yesterday’s post, I’m giving away two passes to the Country Living Fair in Rhinebeck. Just scroll down for all the information. Or click here. I want to clarify that there will be two winners, who will get one pass each. (I like to spread the love around.)

My friend Heidi, whose shop Hi Ho Home Market closed this year (sob), will have a booth there. She is also giving a presentation!

And, my dear blogging friend Elyse is also presenting on Saturday. She’ll be sharing some crafts from her new book, Seaside Tinkered Treasures.

To read about both Heidi and Elyse, visit this link. Elyse is #2, Heidi is #8.

And don’t forget the other giveaway that’s going on here at MHC. Visit my post, Gardening with Hydrangeas from the Endless Summer® Collection for a chance to win a $100 Visa Gift Card.

Happy Saturday.

Giveaway: 2 tickets to the Country Living Fair in Rhinebeck, NY

May 30, 2014 at 8:31 am by Claudia

But first, let’s open with the obligatory photo of my first newly opened Clematis bloom of the season:

clematisbloom

A thing of beauty, no? I’ve had this plant for several years and it never bloomed until we had to cut down the Weeping Willow. Apparently, it wasn’t getting enough sun.

clematisclimbing

Now, it climbs up to the porch railing and spills out onto the lawn.  Sigh of happiness.

Okay. I made you look at flower photos but let’s get to the heart of the matter. Last year, Country Living brought its fair to Rhinebeck, NY, which is just across the Hudson River from where I live.

I didn’t go. Funds were tight. We were just getting by. And I was a bit depressed.

Guess what? The same exact situation is going on this year but I am going anyway! There is much to see and do there, not the least of which is my friend Heidi’s booth which was a real hit last year.

Having Fun Saving With Target’s New Cartwheel App

January 30, 2014 at 9:07 am by Claudia

Like many of you, I love to shop at Target. In fact, I just bought the headboard for my new California King bed, as well as sheets for that bed at Target.com. So when BlogHer asked me if I would try out Target’s new Cartwheel App, I immediately said yes.

Cartwheel is an app that you can use on your desktop, tablet, mobile web, iPhone or Droid. Cartwheel lists over 700 offers, or coupons, at any given time, with new offers every day. You choose items you are interested in purchasing, add them to your Cartwheel, present your personal barcode to the cashier and your savings are added at checkout.

How easy is it to use? Very. You can sign up through Facebook or through your email account. Since I already had an account at Target.com, I used my sign in information to access Cartwheel. Then I proceeded to look at all the available offers and checked the ones I wanted to add to my cart. I printed out my list from my computer, which also included my personal barcode.

I also downloaded the Cartwheel App for my iPhone. You can do the same thing I did online on your phone or tablet, using the barcode on your phone or tablet app at checkout. You can also use your phone app to scan any barcode in the store to see if there is a Cartwheel offer for that item. Pretty neat.

After printing out my list, I headed to my local Target. See how the list includes a picture of the item, the discount and when that discount expires? Some items are limited to a quantity of 4 per offer, while other can be used as many times as you wish until the offer expires. If there are limits, you will see that information on your list. You can’t see it but just to the right at the top of the Cartwheel List is my barcode.

You can also use your Cartwheel with any other Target discounts or coupons, manufacturer’s coupons and your REDcard discount. So the savings can really add up.

I grabbed a cart, looked for the items on the list, decided what I wanted to buy and headed toward the checkout.

cartwheelcart

What did I buy? Floor cloths, trash bags, bleach, cotton balls and a 5 lb. box of Clementine oranges. (Mmmm! I love Clementines!) I had to add the Peet’s French Roast Coffee, though it wasn’t on the Cartwheel list. Peet’s is my favorite and Target carries it. That makes me happy.

I trotted off to the checkout and the cashier scanned my barcode. Instant savings.

It couldn’t have been easier. There weren’t any big ticket items in my cart, but I easily saved a couple of dollars on these five household basics. But the list of Cartwheel offers covers every department in the store. Today there were savings on televisions, clothing, bedding, furniture, you name it. I’m thinking that this new app will come in very handy. It’s so easy to access Cartwheel, check out the daily or weekly deals, and then head to the store with your barcode and list.

I am someone who never remembers to clip coupons, try as I might. So this app is made for me. It makes it very easy for me to seek out savings on essentials.

By the way, Cartwheel also has something called Badges. When you start out on Cartwheel you have 10 spots available on your list. As you earn savings with Cartwheel, you can earn badges that reward you with more spots, increasing the amount of items you can have on your list. I earned another spot just by using Cartwheel for the first time at my local Target.

I’m sold on it. It’s simple, easily accessible and it saves me money. A win-win.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
