Renovating the Dollhouse Kitchen

August 4, 2012 at 8:21 am by Claudia

The other day I treated myself to a little something for the dollhouse. I’d had my eye on it for over a year, checked back in and noticed it was out of stock here and there and figured I’d better get moving. With a little of my ad income, I made the purchase.

What do you think? I’ve always loved the kitchens I see in British design magazines and this so reminded me of a Smallbone kitchen that I couldn’t stop thinking of it. I already have an Aga stove, so this fits perfectly!

I was going to paint it. But then I looked at the tiny little plate rack and wasn’t at all sure I could paint around all those spindles. There’s a lot of painted furniture in this house already, so a dash of warm wood in the heart of the kitchen is a good thing. I used some wallpaper remnants at the back of the shelves to tie in with the rest of the kitchen and brighten things up.

I have to buy a faucet and I may tile the backsplash. What about a little curtain for that area under the sink?

I also played around with a shelf I had on hand, painting and aging it. It’s now over the stove – I’m going to hang some copper pans from the bottom of the middle shelf.

The kitchen table has been aged since I took this picture. So far, the kitchen is the hardest room in which to get any sort of good photo. It’s like a dark tunnel and I can’t get the lighting right. Any tips from you fellow dollhouse lovers?

One more shot of the sink and cupboards. I added some more plates.

This is the only way I’m going to get a farmhouse sink, so I might as well enjoy one in the dollhouse!

How are all of you? It’s so stinking hot and humid here that I barely leave the house. I had to run some errands yesterday, one of which was taking the trash to the town dump, ahem… recycling center. Let me tell you, the scent that was emanating from the piles of trash was especially pungent in this heat.

Happy Saturday.

Don’t forget, the Connecticut Tourism contest is still running until August 8th. Leave a comment on that post if you would like the opportunity to win $1000 toward your very own trip to this beautiful state.

A Hutch for the Studio

October 10, 2010 at 7:15 pm by Claudia

Thanks for all your supportive comments on the newly painted table! I’m really loving the change. Since the kitchen and living room are open to each other and I have 3 darker pieces in the living room, this lighter version of the table makes a big difference. After the table, I moved on to touching up all the chips on the kitchen island. It definitely takes a beating. I’m throwing a couple of coats of Varathane on it, as well.

When I posted for Where Bloggers Create, I mentioned that I was on the lookout for a cabinet for my little studio. Today, via Craig’s List, I found one – just down the road from MHC. My thought was to find a kitchen hutch like the one I already have in our kitchen. Made in the 30’s and 40’s for kitchens without much storage space, they are compact and don’t take up much space. And that is a real necessity in my upstairs hall aka studio. This little hutch is quite interesting. My neighbor told me that it had been in her family for at least 60 years.

It needs cleaning up – and perhaps a new paint job? Husband rather likes the way it looks now. I’m going to scrub it more thoroughly tomorrow. There was ugly contact paper on the shelves, which I removed. Gosh, it is so hard to take a photo in this part of the hallway. I have to hang precariously over the stairway and it ain’t easy for this tired woman. Here’s a close-up of the funky handles on the drawer and doors.

Funky…but I rather like them. I’m going to paint a couple of pieces in the bedroom, too. Yes, I am on a tear. Something about Autumn and the crisp air brings the Supernester out in me. I also think it gives me a focus and keeps me from dwelling too much on other ‘worrying’ things.

Thank goodness, Don is rather good natured  about the whole thing. One minute he’s relaxing, the next we’re in the car on the way to buy a hutch. Later, he’s watching baseball and suddenly he finds himself helping me maneuver the hutch up our stairway. Tomorrow, I will ask him to help me move the craft table out to the shed. (Don’t tell him yet.) I’ve decided there isn’t enough room for it. I can pull the sewing machine out of the sewing table and use it as a craft table when necessary. Have a wonderful Monday.

Painting

October 4, 2010 at 6:53 pm by Claudia

Forecast: 3 days of rain. What better time to start painting the kitchen table? I bought some more paint today (Ivory White by Benjamin Moore) and some primer. By the time I went to the hardware store, the post office, the bank and the grocery store, my starting time had been delayed a few hours. The first coat of primer is on.

I wish the light was better. However, this gives you an idea of how it will look. Tomorrow another coat of primer goes on and then I’ll be ready to paint it (Ivory White is the same color I used on the kitchen island.) Husband already remarked on how much better it looks – I agree.

I received a package in the mail today from my friend Tracie of My Petite Maison. I had mentioned in  a comment that I can never find white pumpkins here…so she sent me some! She also sent along some sunflower seeds for my garden and some lavender.

I have to say that I really love white pumpkins and prefer them to the traditional orange color. Gosh darn it – I wish the table was already painted because I can envision them in a pretty vignette in the center of the table. More reason to get a move on! Thank you, Tracie; you are such a sweetheart.

It’s 6:30 pm as I write this and it’s already dark outside! Do not like.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
