Alarms, Roses and a Beautiful Moth

June 5, 2016 at 10:14 am by Claudia

Curses! Foiled again.

As we were drifting off to sleep last night, one of our smoke detectors went off. But it was just a quick beep-beep. Don got up and disconnected the one he thought was making the sound. (We’ve had trouble before with moths and bugs flying in the detector and setting it off.)

We went back to bed, now wide awake. About ten minutes later, another beep-beep, beep-beep. So Don got up, as did I, and we took the cover off the detector that is right outside our bedroom door. We couldn’t smell any smoke. None of the detectors downstairs were going off.

Back to bed. Ten minutes later…you guessed it. So we got up and went to the detector that is over the stairs. It had to be this one. (There are three detectors rather close together. One is wired into our security system, the other two aren’t.) This one was wired into the system. Cover off. This time we went downstairs and checked everything out. Nothing. We got back into bed. Neither of us could sleep. I got up and checked out the office, just to make sure. Nothing. No more beeps. But sleep was a long time coming.

You understand why I say I really don’t feel like driving 2½ hours to the Miniature Show. In stormy weather, no less.

Someday, I guess. Someday I’ll get to one.

Late yesterday afternoon, I  saw something on the kitchen screen.

I grabbed my camera, intercepted Don as he arrived home, and went to investigate.

6-5 lunamoth1

Oh my heavens! We gasped when we saw this moth. The wings look like leaves. It has a swallowtail. The top edge of the wings looks like a twig. And the antennae look like feathers.

6-5 lunamoth2

There’s a ruffled edge on the wings as well as ‘eyes.’ I ran inside to look it up and discovered it is a Luna Moth. I’ve heard of them, but sightings are rare, as they only fly at night. They live for one week, in which they mate, lay their eggs on the underside of a Black Walnut leaf, and die. We have several Black Walnut trees on the property.

We were entranced by this beautiful being. I’ve never seen one in person, only in photos.

6-5 lunamoth3

It’s one of the largest moths in North America.

Seeing it there felt like a blessing, an amazing sight that was witnessed by only Don and me. Sure enough, as soon as it was dark, it was gone.

Aren’t we lucky?

My Julia Child roses are blooming. I originally chose the bush because the flowers were yellow. Over the course of the years, they’ve turned dark red. That happens sometimes with roses that are grafted onto another bush. I miss the yellow, but I’ll take the red, especially since it didn’t bloom last summer after the harsh winter we had. I thought it was gone, remember? I was even considering digging it out and removing it. But it surprised me this year.

Some of the leaves have been chomped on by some creature or other. But I won’t use pesticides, so that’s the way it’s going to be.

Pretty!

So we’ll try to figure out the mystery of the smoke detector today. Perhaps the battery needs replacing.

I have a book review scheduled for tomorrow. It’s for Keep You Close, an incredibly well-written mystery with a twist in the plot that will shock you. I’ll be giving away a copy, so be sure to stop by.

Happy Sunday.

The Proliferation of Picks

May 16, 2016 at 9:22 am by Claudia

5-16 stilllife2

Still life: Roseville, McCoy, Mah Jongg tiles, a shell found on the beach in Florida, a mini Eiffel Tower, and guitar picks.

Don rarely uses a pick. He’s told me so. Repeatedly.

This raises a question: Why, then, are there picks everywhere  in the cottage? They seem to expand, grow, clone themselves. Are they multiplying overnight? Do they have parties when we are blissfully sleeping in our bed, unaware of the activity happening directly below us?

Are the picks, like some mutant strain, going to take over the house?

I wonder.

It gives one pause.

Windy and cold all day yesterday. Windy again today. When, oh when, will I finally be able to pot the flats of impatiens that are now living on my living room floor because the temperature went down to 36 degrees last night? When will I be able to walk around outside without the wind kicking even more pollen than usual into my eyes?

I did manage to get the morning glory and zinnia seeds planted on Saturday.

That my friends, is it. That, and we finished Season Two of Grace and Frankie. And now we’re sad that it’s over until whenever Season Three is released. I’m going to write about that show and why it’s so amazing and rare sometime later in the week. I want to get my thoughts together.

In the meantime, I’ve written a review of The Travelers  by Chris Pavone. It’s on Just Let Me Finish This Page today. Excellent, excellent, excellent! Stop by and read about it.

Happy Monday.

Friday Thoughts

May 6, 2016 at 8:41 am by Claudia

Oh for heaven’s sake. This is the fifth day in a row of rain, with temperatures a good twenty degrees below normal. I can’t plant seeds, I can’t weed the garden or put down mulch. The lawn is growing by leaps and bounds and we are just stuck here in the cottage about ready to go nuts.

I’ve had it.

I got home yesterday and took some photos late in the day of the few blooms that are happening around here. Daffodils are blooming in a clearing on the edge of our woods.

5-6 daffodil1

It’s May 6th, and the daffodils are just now blooming. We have had the weirdest spring. Abnormally warm. Then snow out of nowhere, with ice. Then warm. Then cold.  And on and on it goes.

5-6 daffodil2

I wanted you to see the wee little bug that was on a petal.

• Anastasia  is simply wonderful. I can’t wait to see it in full costume, with gorgeous sets and a full orchestra. In fact, the cast was going to sing with the orchestra for the first time yesterday afternoon, and the composer and lyricist wanted me to stick around if I could (they were understandably excited) but I had to get on the road. By the way, that first rehearsal with the orchestra is called the Sitzprobe, a German term used in opera that literally means ‘seated rehearsal.’

The music is glorious, the cast is very, very talented, the dances are great, Darko’s direction is impeccable, as always. The next time I see it will be for a Preview – probably in a little over a week.

• Don will be starting Medicare in June. (We can’t believe we’re this old!) I won’t be eligible for a year and a half. So we called New York State of Health (our state’s vehicle for the Affordable Care Act) to let them know that and to ask that our policy be changed to a single policy. For months now, I have been looking forward to finally saving some money on health insurance, which for those of us who are older, but not quite ready for Medicare, and who earn a modest income but are not at the poverty level, has not really been all that affordable. In fact, it’s been a strain financially.

Imagine my shock when I was told that I no longer qualified for a tax credit – even though, right now, we do get a tax credit. Due to some metrics that I cannot understand that have to do with income, a single policy, and the fact that I, being honest, reported a bit more income – and by a bit I mean no more than $2000 – that I’d earned this year, never mind the fact that I have no guarantee of any more income for the rest of this year – I’m suddenly going to have to pay more than we’re paying now. For just me. And, since Don has to pay monthly for Medicare Part B, we are now losing money.

I can’t tell you how upset I was. We looked over policies and, honestly, I could save maybe $50 if I went for one with a $5000 deductible, but that is simply ridiculous. Those policies also require you to pay a rather large chunk of the costs of hospitalization, also no-can-do. So I have to pay more, just to get to a $2000 deductible.

Pardon me while I scream.

I championed the Affordable Care Act and I know it is helping millions of people. It is helping many actors I know, many young people who are working part-time, the list is quite long. That’s a wonderful thing. But it doesn’t help those of us who are in a riskier age category and who aren’t quite 65. For us, it sort of sucks. Big time.

Edited to add:  Please remember, though, that pre-the Affordable Health Care Act, getting insurance as two freelancers was much more difficult. I want to be clear on that. We had to settle for catastrophic insurance, which only covers hospitalization.

• Today is my late brother Dave’s birthday. He would have been 69. He died when he was 44. I miss him so much. Happy Birthday, dear brother. And Happy Birthday to his son Eric who shares the same birthday.

• I’m not looking forward to Mother’s Day for obvious reasons. I hope the day brings weather that allows me to work outside. I think that will help. I just have to keep busy on that day.

Happy Friday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
