Parrish The Thought

July 1, 2016 at 9:22 am by Claudia

When I took the sketch of Scout to Michael’s a couple of weeks ago in order to find the right frame, I decided to also take the Maxfield Parrish that arrived at our cottage with all of the glass broken. It had been sitting in a corner of my office, covered in protective fabric, until I could get around to dealing with it. I knew it needed new glass, but when I measured it, I quickly discovered it was an odd size. It had been framed many, many years ago – most likely in the 1920s – and the backing was fragile.

So, off I went. The woman working in the frame department was so helpful; she carefully removed all the nails, and gently removed the print. Thank goodness, I didn’t just opt for a piece of glass. The corrugated cardboard used as backing had left its mark on the back of the print, so we caught it just in time. After discussing many options, I decided to stay with the original frame and spacers were added, as well as new glass and acid-free backing. The logo from the original framer in New Orleans was carefully cut out and tucked in a little envelope on the back.

Instead of getting an estimate, I ended up going ahead with the order, and yesterday, it was ready.

It won’t look all that different to you, but I know it’s been given the correct acid-free backing and that spacers are between the print and the glass, and that it looks more beautiful than ever!

Of course, all this cost me nearly as much as the print, thank you very much. On the other hand, if I had left it as is, the print would have soon been damaged, so I’m choosing to think of it as an unexpected blessing.

When we first purchased it, I told Don I pictured it hanging on the wall near my desk, in my soon-to-be office space. And there it is.

I can’t tell you how happy it makes me to look over to my right and see Dinky Bird by Maxfield Parrish hanging on the wall.

The machine embroidery of Scout was also ‘framed’ yesterday and looks much better than it does in this picture. I stretched it on a small canvas and it’s now leaning against the wall on the left side of my desk.

In case you think my desk is always neat, here is what I shoved to the side to take the picture of the Parrish.

Then, of course, I was on a roll, so I decided to finally do something about the bulletin board and mini pottery, etc., that are hanging on the wall between the china cabinet and the corner. They were much too close together because I added the bulletin board a few weeks after I hung ‘Claudia’ and the mini pottery.

I’m inventing a new word: Spanging. Definition: when, in the midst of hanging something on the wall, many mistakes are made with the unhappy byproduct being unnecessary holes in the wall, resulting in the person who is hanging the object simultaneously spackling the holes and rehanging the object.

That’s what I did yesterday. I had the same trouble when I originally hung everything. It’s because all three objects are hanging in a corner and the desk is in the way and I’m working under a slanted ceiling, so my body is torqued and I just can’t get things even.

It’s dark in this corner this morning, but you get the picture. And of course, I took the picture at an angle for the same reasons given above. But trust me, everything is level and there’s much more space between the bulletin board and Claudia and the mini pottery. It needed breathing space.

Sigh. Here’s my view out the window as I’m sitting at my desk.

I’m shooting directly into the light, of course, so it’s a bit blurry, but there’s the mountain ridge. The trees have obligingly provided an opening so I can see the mountains. Thank you!

Dinner, A Present & A Scarf

November 27, 2015 at 9:00 am by Claudia

I hope my American readers had a lovely Thanksgiving. I know we did. We had a very quiet day. I did a lot of crocheting – new scarf in the shop and another one will be listed tomorrow – and Don took a trail walk. We did have a lovely dinner. We don’t do meat on Thanksgiving, or any other day for that matter, because I’m a longtime vegetarian. Don found a new recipe for Stuffed Portobello Mushrooms in the New York Times and he made it for our dinner.

Oh my heavens.

11-27 thanksgiving dinner

Unbelievably  good. Mouthwateringly good. And, may I say, much more tasty than any meat I can think of.

And I, of course, made my grandmother’s Cloud Biscuits.

11-27 biscuits

Fresh from the oven. These biscuits are one of my favorite things ever. Grandma made them, Mom made them, my niece makes them, I make them. Don drools over them, as do I.

I have a feeling they’re very close to traditional baking powder biscuits, but in my family they are Cloud Biscuits.

Pumpkin Pie for dessert. We were stuffed.

My main birthday present arrived on Wednesday. I found it on Etsy and Don thought it should be my birthday present. I, of course, agreed.

11-27 parrish

I had to have it.

The frame isn’t as beautiful as the one I saw locally, but I think the print itself is bigger.

There was only one problem. It arrived with the glass broken.

I was very unhappy.

The nice lady who is selling part of her Parrish collection did not do a good job of packing it. No bubble wrap. Just protective cardboard corners on the frame. And nothing between that and the top of the box. I wrote her immediately and she’s going to send me money to replace the glass, but come on! I now have to find someone to cut the glass and carefully pry off the vintage backing – probably from around 1910.

I’m sure you won’t be shocked when I say I’m pissed off.  So is Don.

She felt very badly about it and said she uses the same company all the time and this has never happened. They were supposed to mark it as Fragile.

Not one indication on the box that the package was fragile.

I had to take it out on the porch, put it on a towel, and carefully take the broken glass out of the frame.

The seller is a sweet lady and has the same passion for Parrish that I have, but I told her she has to pack things more securely in the future, or this will happen again.

Sigh.

In spite of all the drama, I’m thrilled to have my own original print of Dinkey Bird. It’s stunningly beautiful.

But it has no protection at the moment, so I’ve put it somewhere out of the way.

New in the Etsy shop:

11-27 etsyscarfgrapevineblog

Obsession Scarf in Grapevine. I really, really love this one. The colors are so lovely. It’s available here.

Update: It sold almost immediately! Another one tomorrow, I promise. Keep watching for updates.

I’ll be listing another scarf tomorrow. I’m also crocheting some special orders, so these hands are busy.

Happy Friday.

Chimes

November 25, 2015 at 7:50 am by Claudia

11-25 living room

It was a sunny, sunny day yesterday with the light flooding into the living room. I was sitting in Don’s chair, camera on the coffee table, Scoutie beneath my legs. Without the leaves on the trees, winter sunlight is unfiltered and beautifully bright.

11-25 piano

The birthday cards from Don, Scoutie, and the wonderful card Don gave me from my parents are on display on the piano. The Maxfield Parrish “Pierrot’s Serenade” is on the left. A McCoy vase and singing birds in the center, along with our lithograph of the Aquitania, one of our favorite things ever.

I love wind chimes and I’ve always wanted some for our porch, but it was never the right time. I’d see some chimes and almost  buy them, but there was always something more pressing that needed those funds. So I’d hem and haw and regretfully walk away.

When I was sorting and cleaning at the condo with Meredith I saw two sets of wind chimes. A smaller set was in front of the house and a bigger set was in the back on the lanai. The set on the lanai had a lovely sound, not light and tinkly, but deep and resonant. I asked Mer if it would be okay with her if I took them. Of course, she said.

11-25 windchimes

They’re hanging right by the front door.

I absolutely love them. So does Don. We hear them a lot. The sound is beautiful and strangely comforting – perhaps because my parents chose them. It feels as if they are speaking to us. Both of us have remarked that the chimes remind us of my mom and dad in the best possible way.

You see? It wasn’t meant to be all those times I almost bought some. What was meant to be was this.

This lovely, magical sound, once heard at my parents’ condo, now heard here.

Happy Wednesday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
